Since 2006 Miami started 4, 4, 2, 4, 2, 4, 5, 3, 4, 4, 3, 3, 4, 2, 2, and 2 whites. They are projected to start 4 under new head coach Mario Cristobal.
Cristobal returns to Miami with plenty of fanfare. He won two Pac 12 titles at Oregon and is considered a top up-and-coming head coach. Previously, he’d won two national championships as a player for the Hurricanes in 1989 and 1991. Also in their first year are OC Josh Gattis (via Michigan) and DC Kevin Steele, who has coached at Auburn, LSU, Clemson, and Alabama. The university definitely opened up the coffers to pay for a big name coach and high profile assistants.
The other big name to know is not formally associated with the school. Billionaire lawyer John H. Ruiz has made a big splash paying players with NIL deals for his alma mater. Ruiz is definitely “new money” with his hands in a lot of pots and schemes. He is not shying away from Miami’s vintage “thug” culture of the 80’s and 90’s, and he will happily host athletes for lavish parties at his giant mansion (legally, because they are his employees now).
As for the players, Tyler Van Dyke has an outside shot at the Heisman race if Miami can put up some offensive numbers. Van Dyke was the conference’s Offensive Rookie of the Year after taking over starting duties three games into his second year of college.
Tight end Will Mallory returns as the top TE option after amassing 30 catches, 347 yards, and four touchdowns in 2021. Slot receiver Xavier Restrepo seems to have played his way onto the field and will feature even more than last season’s 373 yards and 2 touchdowns. He’s a big play threat that has also moonlighted as a kick returner. (Restrepo’s father is Colombian and his mother is a white American, so your mileage in cheering for him may vary)
Jacob Lichtenstein arrives as a grad transfer from USC. He was third on the team last season in both tackles for loss (6) and sacks (4). He will probably be the nominal starter on a line that rotates fairly heavily.
Starters:
QB: Tyler Van Dyke
Slot: Xavier Restrepo
TE: Will Mallory
DT: Jacob Lichtenstein
Backups to watch:
QB: John Garcia
OL: Michael McLaughlin, Ryan Rodriguez
LB: Ryan Ragone
