Utah has started 11, 11, 11, 8, 8, 11, 11, 11, 6, 6, 6, 5, 5, 2 and 4 whites since we've been tracking them. This year it is 5. Utah seems to be a team that gives us some weird storylines every year. Their roster has been filled heavily with Polynesians, a development that corresponded with the drop off in white starters a decade or so ago. That said, it's not uncommon to see whites at more forbidden positions at Utah, and they seem to treat us to the occasional safety or WR. This year's biggest focus is Britain Covey, who is somehow still only a junior. COVID plus a mission means that we get even more looks at the shifty slot received who started as a true freshman in 2015! Yeah, 2015! He could be here next year too.
Aside from Covey, Utah has returned to white QBs after a long streak without them. Last year's starter Jake Bentley, originally a transfer from South Carolina, bolted for South Alabama, leaving Baylor transfer Charlie Brewer to take over the helm. Catching passes from him will be the hyperathletic TE Brant Kuithe, one of my favorite players in college football. This guy is athletic enough to be a starting running back. He is big and he is fast. Cole Fotheringham will join him in the team's common two TE looks, but mostly as a blocker.
The defensive side of the ball is barren this year, but there's some white depth. I counted 8 polynesian starters on defense. Not even Hawaii can match these numbers.
Offense -
QB - Charlie Brewer
WR - Britain Covey
TE - Brant Kuithe
TE - Cole Fotheringham
LT - Jaren Kump
Defense -
None
Back ups include QB Peter Costelli, TE Dalton Kincaid, LG Keaton Bills, DE Blake Kuithe, LB Trey Reynolds, LB Hayden Furey, and SS Cole Bishop.
