Mississippi State has started 1, 2, 2, 3, 5, 5, 2, 2 and 2, 2, 3, 1, 1, and 3 whites. This year it is 3 again.
While no means a total caste buster, second year HC Mike Leach should at least shift Mississippi State away from its long heralded tradition of one white starter, given Leach's longtime consistency in utilizing white QBs and generally being open to white WRs. Still would not expect this team to get too much better, but the always expressive Mike Leach might be a bit more open to challenging its demographics. Leach has already filled the roster up with South Alabama transfer Chance Lovertich, Sam Houston State transfer Jack Kristofek and Southern Miss transfer Jack Abraham. They all are likely to sit behind Will Rogers, and this is after KJ Costello bolted to the NFL and dual threat QB Garrett Shrader transferred to Syracuse.
Senior WR Austin Williams (6'3" 200) returns as a longtime starter at WR, where he's posted consistent but not spectacular stats. Cole Smith is likely to start at center, but has been shifting around the interior during camp, so even he is not guaranteed to continue as starter. There are a number of interesting players on the roster that could see the field, including huge WR Brad Cumbest (6'4", 240, also a member of the baseball team) who made one start last year but is missing from most of this year's depth chart projections. On the defensive side of the ball, DE Jack Harris and LB Jett Johnson are both scholarship second teamers. Walk on senior Sherman Timbs has also been running with the twos. Hopefully, scholarship DB Landon Guidry can find the field as well.
Offense:
QB - Will Rogers
WR - Austin Williams
C - Cole Smith
Defense:
None
Back ups include QB Jack Abraham, WR Brad Cumbest, DE Jack Harris, LB Jett Johnson, LB Sherman Timbs, and S Landon Guidry.
