2019 World Athletics Championship

Since this event which begins this Friday and ends October 6th is the biggest Track and Field event outside of the Olympics ( which are next year) it deserves it's own thread. I believe the Women's marathon kicks things off Friday.

One encouraging note for TV programming. I don't get the Olympic Network but NBSCSN will be covering the events most evenings on tape. In fact I think their coverage is almost every night with a few exceptions since the NHL is getting underway next week. I doubt I will hear spoilers and am looking forward to tuning in.

There are a lot of Track and Field experts posting here at CF that is for sure. So I also look forward to the commentary here.

The last few IAAF World Championships, Youtube has had posted sessions a few hours after the live event ended, these are official videos so they won't be pulled within hours of being put on Youtube. I think the morning sessions are early morning ie 8am on the east coast and the evening sessions are mid afternoon.

As for having the event in Qatar it will be a classic white elephant that will be sparsely attended, because of lack of interest and having the event in a city state the size of greater Washington D.C. Supposedly the slave workers from India, Pakistan, Egypt etc will be given tickets to attend the sessions so that the meet looks more popular than it is. These workers should hold signs with messages for help and to their families in their home countries that they are alive as I have heard horror stories of bondage and non payment of wages or overtime.

As for the meet the men's 400m hurdles world record is hanging by a thread and Warholm or Benjamin could break it if their form holds from earlier in the season. I expect the World Championship record of Kevin Young to fall as that is "only" 47.19. We may also see other records too as the triple jump record by Edwards seems vulnerable and the women's 400m hurdles record was already broken this track season.

Yes I watched some of the heats and no non Black looks like a lock to make the final. Only Gemili looked decent in his heat but he did finish third and generally guys that are runners up don't make the final unless they finished second to a heavy favorite.

Tortu finished 3rd himself but was well beaten by the two other qualifiers in his heat. Browning literally sh&^ the bed in his heat as he finished a well beaten 10.4X in the weather of Doha that is a terrible time, he must have had a case of the nerves.

Browning's first 40-50m were decent but he tied up and his stride pattern went to the birds after 50m....lack of good conditioning is usually the culprit and he possibly has a few niggles yet. Tortu will not make it out of the semis, the Chinese sprinters were a big disappointment time-wise but a couple qualified. The Japanese men qualified 3 none look to make it out of semis. Taftian can't seem to get it together in big meets.

The four obvious juicers Gatlin, Coleman, Sambine and Blake should just walk away....

What's even worse is that Gemeli is stuck in lane 7 in his semi finals and Tortu is in lane 8. The outside lanes almost never qualify for the finals. Your running blind. Too hard to judge
where your at. Hope they prove me wrong but I doubt it.

once again I'm surprised that we Australians can't get it right for a major championships.
Surely it isn't unreasonable to expect personal best or near PB times for well prepared athletes?
I really expected the tough Catriona Bissett to breeze through to the 800 semis but she finished last.
I guess I'm just going to train myself to expect nothing from our athletes and then rejoice for an occasional top performance.

Lukenkemper terrible start 1.5m down by 15m, finishes strong for third just out dipping Swoboda. Fraser Price wins in 10.80, obviously on PEDS...

If you count the Aians we have six guys in the semis. Tortu and Gemilli won't make it. I think koike and Bingtian Su have a chance. It is not out of the realm of possibility Koike runs a 9.94 today. Just a hunch. We will know in less than half an hour.

Gemili was jobbed to a point, but Tortu to my naked eye seemed to come about 4th or 5th in his heat got the 2nd fastest loser spot with 10.11.

It looks like Coleman has to trip or pull a muscle not to win in the final as he is more than a tenth of a second faster than the next fasted time.

PS, it looks like the IAAF isn't posting a delayed broadcast this year and all of the fan posts on Youtube are getting pulled. I saw a few events on a private channel from a fan who always posts the results on Youtube.

Adam Gemeli missed the 100 meter finals by 1/100th of a second.

21 year old italian sprinter Filippo Tortu made the finals! He will be stuck in lane 1 but at least he is
the only one of our guys to make the final. Tortu ran a 10.11 with a .217 reaction time.
He was sleeping in the blocks so his time could have been alot faster!Even the asian sprinters underacheived. This
is a step in the right direction for Tortu. He has been in poor form all season and
struggled with injuries but to make the world champs 100 meter finals is very hard
to do. I don't expect him to medal but maybe next year for the olympics he will be in
better form. So happy he made the finals.

Coleman should have been watching the final from his couch as he missed 3 whereabouts tests within a 12 month cycle. His lawyers argued that he missed 3 over 12+ months. Really US track governing body is way too friendly with their athletes and buy the dog ate my homework excuses. The pressure from Nike, Adidas and NBC must be enormous to let probable cheats skate.

I suspect this was the last gasp of breath for Gatlin as he was a clear second and was managing his races since Rio, he will probably age further in the lead up to Tokyo.

Tortu was shocking to a point as his form all year was mediocre at best, but he raced hard and made the final and raced well. If his season form was better he could have been battling for a bronze in this race.

I'm very happy with Tortu making the final and running a 10.07 with the injuries and bad luck he has had this year. The thing he needs to improve drastically is
getting out of the blocks faster. His reaction time was the slowest in the semi finals and again in the finals. He has a good drive phase but doesn't react to the gun as
fast as the other guys. The kid is 21 so I doubt it's his hearing. He needs to work on that. So happy he make his first world champs finals though as a sprinter. Filippo
Tortu has an exciting career ahead of him! The new Lemaitre!
