I am a huge Messi fan. Look for him to bounce back. Too much congestion every time he touched the ball. The missed penalty kick is tough especially after Ronaldo's magic but it is early. Don't count out this maestro just yet.

The Denmark Peru game was tighter than a drum and frankly Peru had a lot of failed chances including one of the worst penalty kicks you will ever see.

While Poulsen scored the game's only goal I am still posting the video because their leader and star player Christian Eriksen (Tottenham) displayed brilliant mastery as he set up Poulsen with a casually gorgeous assist. Sure the finisher usually gets the most glory but this carefully created goal was the result of Eriksen's genius. Watch the defenders close on the dangerous Eriksen which opens up the passing lane for the great assist. Nice finish by Poulsen but make no mistake Eriksen had more to do with the goal than Poulsen.

A few sources were reporting Loew was going to drop Ozil from the starting XI for this match, but of course, I knew better. Ozil is Loew's absolute favorite, and was not surprised in the least when I saw him trotting out today. Ozil proceeded to repay Loew by being invisible for the entire match and doing absolutely nothing. Khedira was worthless as well.

Germany was not very good with their shots and touches in the box today; there weren't very many shots that looked too threatening. Even with those two started, I really do wish Germany would have won. They still had 8-9 whites on the pitch the entire match. In addition, being that the coverage in the States is now more pro-Mexico then ever, especially with the "USA" being out. Mexico winning means 24/7 coverage of them here, and it'll be worse now that they've knocked off Germany.

Hopefully, Loew learns from this and gets either Ozil or Khedira (or both) off the pitch next match. They've been his favorites since they've been up, so I won't believe either of them will be benched until I see it.

On the bright side, what a goal by Serbian captain Aleksander Kolarov to give the Serbs the 1-0 win over Costa Rica.

That's what I prefer as well, though I'd be happy to see Argentina go through too. They're one of the whiter sides of the tournament with a superstar in Messi. After Nigeria basically looked clueless against Croatia today, I don't foresee them getting close to advancing.

Germany play their first match against Mexico tomorrow. It looks like they'll have the same three non-whites they've had starting since the 2010 WC will be starting tomorrow. As usual, Germany will have plenty of attacking white talent to put on the pitch, so they should still be a decent team to root for. Unfortunately, with Weigl and Kramer having injury-filled/average seasons, Khedira's spot was pretty much sewed up. Hopefully, young midfield Leon Goretzka will be able to get on the pitch as an impact sub. With Marco Reus, Thomas Muller, and young star Timo Werner leading the Germany attack, they'll be fun to watch.

The amount of theatrics and flopping by the Brazillians is really something. If one of the "Swiss" so much as brushes against one of them, the Brazillian falls onto the pitch, grabbing his leg and screaming in agony.

The same economic dynamic you mention was evident in the Brazil game. Almost all the players were black or "Brazilian Brown", while almost all the fans were white. In that regard it was similar to an NFL or college football game.

Brazil and France may not be all they were cracked up to be. Germany does not resemble the team from 4 years ago. But it's probably premature to render any definitive verdicts after just one game in the group stage. I'm optimistic however that a heavily non-white team will not win the cup this year.

Speaking of Brazil, they have generally fielded teams that are more or less representative of the demographics of the country. About equal number whites, browns, and blacks. However the last such teams were in 1982/86 world cups, and things started to trend decidedly darker after that, with only 1-2 whites starting. Definitely not a team to root for from our perspective.

I was thinking the same thing. All those white-looking Mexicans on TV make it look like Mexico is somewhat European and thus, from a European perspective, more familiar, and more likeable to ordinary white people when, of course, they are amongst the worst savages on earth. I know from first hand experience Germans love Mexicans and support them against "racist" Donald Trump supporters who, to Germans, are sub-human. Germans see Mexicans as fun-loving people with a happy and colourful culture. Drunk-driving, animal-torturing, neighbourhood-destroying Mexicans are unknown to the average German who is convinced that Americans opposed to the Aztec invasion are evildoers for not bending over for Beaners. In this respect it is actually somewhat gratifying to see them lose to Mexico.

As for the football...the Germans were pathetic in terms of organisation, something which they are supposed to excel in. Their defence and midfield were a mess in the first half. Despite not scoring I think they probably have just enough fire-power upfront to get the job done when necessary but they need to sort out their midfield and defence.

I forgot to mention that Julian Brandt played well after coming on as a sub - he replaced Werner, who was quite poor - fairly late in the match.

I guess I wanted to mention it because there was some controversy about him being chosen over the mixed race player Leroy Sane of Man City. I was surprised the talented Sane was not chosen but since I don't see much Bundesliga - Brandt plays for Bayer Leverkusen - I have no clue who is the better of the two.

France lucky to escape with a win against the “powerhouse” of Australia. Pogba’s goal was sheer luck and the first goal needed this new video replay system to confirm.

Hopefully Denmark and Peru whip this team of African invaders.

Australia’s “performance” against “France” fulfilled my most dire expectations. Zero skill, zero movement, and zero tactical awareness - coupled with constant nerve-wracked errors and an absolute inability to retain any meaningful possession - all added up to nauseating embarrassment on the world stage. But that’s what you get when a team largely comprised of sub-mediocre players who ply their so-called “trade” (often via sitting on a bench…) in Asia, Australia, the second tiers of England and Germany, and relegation-threatened clubs in “top divisions” of various third-rate European leagues walks out onto the pitch at the World Cup. The only players who didn’t look out of their depth were midfielder Aaron Mooy (Huddersfield Town) and goalkeeper Mathew Ryan (Brighton & Hove Albion).

That being said, the team tried its best and was very unlucky to have conceded a penalty via a VAR decision. Unlike the woefully biased Australian media and gullible, soccer-ignorant Australian public, I’m not making excuses for either the defeat or the style in which the game was lost. After all, if a team shows next to no attacking endeavour and is penned in its own half for most of the match, the opposition will usually score one way or another. However, take a look at the following video, particularly the segment between 1:30 and 2:40…

At 1:35, one can clearly see that Josh Risdon (Western Sydney Wanderers) got a touch on the ball, which knocked it against Griezmann, who thereby lost control of it. It was only then that the two players’ legs became entangled in the natural follow through. The Uruguayan referee’s original decision not to give a penalty was correct. Call me cynical, but I’m sure that if the situation had been reversed and a French defender had made an identical tackle on an Australian player, the VAR team would not have awarded a penalty…

Despite easily controlling the match against a weak opponent, “France” lacked incision and couldn’t create much in terms of goalscoring opportunities. The endlessly-hyped Paul Pogba was almost anonymous in a team which was overwhelmingly dominant for most of the game. He made a couple of decent passes, but his attempts to split the Australian defence were all overhit. Pogba’s only significant contributions were the pass which led to the erroneous penalty plus his deflected “shot” which came off the Turk Aziz Behich and looped up over Matt Ryan to go in for a goal via the crossbar. The video below shows just how fluky that goal was. It also reveals some pitifully incompetent defending…

Incidentally, it was quite surprising that for a team full of Negroes...the most annoying French player was the White left back Lucas Hernandez, whose theatrical collapses every second time he was touched were thoroughly shameful. What a prick…

One of the interesting things about our age is that the same countries that are uber-PC suddenly become blowhard nationalists when it comes to sport. Almost as if it is some kind of over-compensation for not being able to have genuine nationalism. Sweden and Canada are both known for media that are very nationalistic when it comes to sport, and only sport.
