I see that Ryota Yamagata of Japan ran a 10.08 (-0.1w) in the finals and 10.06 (1.3w) in the heats in Canberra, Australia.
Yoshihide Kiryu ran 10.19 in the finals and 10.04 (1.4w) in the heats.
Wow!
Yes, I was there to see them demolish our local guys. Kiwi Joseph Millar finished 3rd in the final, 1/2 metre behind Kiryu in a PB 10.24 (-0.1W). He's been the best antipodean sprinter this season and we'll see him again in the Aussie championships in 2 weeks time. Josh Clarke's 10.32 was virtually the same as his 10.22 (+1.6) 3 weeks ago - I wondered when he missed the final after that 10.22 if he was again nursing an injury. I think he's prone to injury woes which may shorten his career prematurely.
With favourable conditions when they peak both these Japanese guys will go sub 10 - just a matter of time.
In the women, Melissa Breen again disappointed - home track, warm day, slight favouring breeze, 650 metres elevation for a 11.47 - she needs to get a job.
Ella Nelson , fresh of the plane from Phoenix where she was in the middle of heavy training managed 22.99 (corrected to 23.00 later) in her first 200 hit out of the year. She trains over there with Stu McMillan.
Hurdler Michelle Jenneke missed worlds qualifying by 1/100 , running 12.99 legal - Sally Pearson again a no-show. Is she living on hope devoid of realism?
Jack Hale, a no show as were many of the listed 100 and 200 entrants. I really feel we've become soft as this never happened till this century after our Olympics and I've been watching since the 70s. What's worse is the people used to advertize for the meet and garner interest were some who no showed.
Millar also PB'd in today's 200 (20.68) behind Kiryu's 20.60 so he keeps improving. I wish he'd also run the earlier 100 yesterday like the Japanese guys. He most probably would have a 10.12-10.15 PB on the board now
