2017 San Francisco 49ers

After a really poor few years after firing Harbaugh, the niners have struggled under Tomsula and Kelly, because of basically, poor QB play, poor running game, poor receivers, and an overall poor defence. Out go Kelly and the terrible GM Trent Baalke, and in come former Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan and all-time great safety John Lynch.

Starters: 8 (all on offense)
Total on 53-man roster: 17
Obviously a too-low amount on the 53, but the offense is worth watching this season. Taylor and Kittle should receive plenty of playing time as rookies, while the OL is very white and very good - headlined by the elite LT Joe Staley. Brian Hoyer should be a big upgrade on Kaepernick and Gabbert, while Beathard has looked good in pre-season and could start somewhere down the line if the niners commit to tanking for another high draft pick and potentially drafting Darnold, Rosen, or Allen. Kyle Juszczyk is extremely versatile and will certainly be used to full effect - he's a great blocker, pass catcher, and runner with the ball.

Under Shanahan and Lynch I'd say the niners are trending towards the right direction (especially with kicking Kaepernick's ass to the curb), just have to massively improve the defence - potentially bringing in and starting Ben Boulware somewhere down the line in 2017?

Definitely a team going in the right direction and one to root for this year. We'll see how long Hoyer is the starter. I haven't seen Beathard much but he could get the call later in the season, or as you say they may be looking to get a franchise QB in the 2018 draft.

The 49ers made a mistake in passing on potential franchise quarterback Mitch Trubisky. They were praised by the mainstream media for trading the pick and not taking Trubisky but the praise was not warranted.

LB Brock Coyle started against the Colts today, a 4th year UDFA out of Montana. The 49ers DC Robert Saleh has praised him, on his decision he said "Brock deserved it. He's a very athletic, strong, and hard working player, with the ideal size I want my MLB's 6'2 245 ".
Brock Coyle will be a bright spot on a very dark 49ers defense!

And now the 49ers have released Bowman. Bowman was a tackling machine for a few years before blowing out his knee, would be great if Coyle can be one also.

The San Francisco 49ers announced on Friday they have released linebacker NaVorro Bowman. "Thursday evening, [49ers coach] Kyle [Shanahan] and I met with NaVorro, and from our conversation it became evident that going in different directions was best for both him and our team," 49ers general manager John Lynch said in a statement. "Although NaVorro may be moving on, he will always be looked at as one of the great players to wear the red and gold. We wish him and his family great success." Earlier on Friday, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the 49ers were shopping Bowman and that there were teams interested in the veteran. Bowman, 29, has been unhappy with his playing time with the 49ers. He has played in all five games this season, getting 38 total tackles, but his snaps have been reduced as Brock Coyle has gotten more opportunities.

Brock Coyle played in every defensive snap against the Redskins and Eagles, seems to have solidified his place as he had 6 tackles in each of those games. Hopefully he can continue to see the field a lot.

One really bright spot for the niners - their special teams unit has been very good. Bradley Pinion has been PFF's third-best punter overall for the season and has been good on kick-offs. PFF also grade rookie WR Trent Taylor as a top 10 punt returner, while Robbie Gould has been very accurate so far. PFF rates the niners special teams #3 in the league right now after being #1 the previous week

Not a whole lot has gone well for the Niners, but their special teams have been a bright spot. Bradley Pinion is the third-highest graded punter through nine weeks, generating the eighth-highest net punting average on his 52 punts.Raheem Mostert and Adrian Colbert have combined for 11 total tackles in coverage units, while Trent Taylor is in the top 10 among punt returners in our grading. Veteran Robbie Gould is having a good first season in San Francisco, hitting 18-of-20 field goals through nine games.

I know many on here don’t necessarily like Marsh and the way he conducts himself that much, but it’s still another step in the right direction for the Lynch and Shanahan-lead SF. Hopefully Marsh can join Coyle in getting significant playing time - the new Justin Smith and Borland?

Eh I'm iffy on Marsh but at least he's taking Datone Jones a former first Rd busts spot. In fact Jones is on his third team in a year and is likely done as an NFL player. Nice job GB!

San Francisco have signed a second white WR (almost unheard of over the past couple decades on a team outside of Green Bay, New England, and Denver) in Max McCaffrey, who will hopefully get a fair few reps and maybe join Trent Taylor as a favoured target of Garoppolo. His fate and success is pretty much in his hands - he has what I believe are a reasonably white friendly GM and HC, while the receivers ahead of him aren't amazing. The two currently listed starting outside WRs are Aldrick Robinson (16 catches this season so I'm not too sure about him?) and Marquise Goodwin (who has admittedly been performing very well recently), with Taylor in the slot and the fourth and fifth WRs, excluding McCaffrey, and Kendrick Bourne (9 catches this season) and Louis Murphy (6 catches this season), while Pierre Garcon is injured.

Robinson, Bourne, and Murphy are bums as far as I can tell. Goodwin and Taylor are pretty locked in for a starting outside WR and inside WR spots, so McCaffrey can certainly take this chance through to getting a lot of NFL reps.

I hope the 49ers have a fairly white draft and free agency class. I loved the trade for Garoppolo and it seems like he can be their answer at QB - getting him at the price of a 2nd round pick was a very astute move. I'd love to see Lynch draft Josey Jewell and Harrison Phillips for that defense.
