Some good news coming out of week 1 on Josey Jewell - the best LB in the nation :
http://www.hawkcentral.com/story/sp...amp-national-defensive-player-week/629796001/

Iowa redshirt senior LB Josey Jewell was named the Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Saturday's win over Wyoming.

Jewell (6'2/230) recorded 14 tackles and a pair of sacks as Iowa manhandled the Wyoming offense, limiting it to just three points on the afternoon. After the game, Hawkeyes HC Kirk Ferentz raved about Jewell's performance, saying that "he’s just got something about him, the way he plays, the tempo he plays at." Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline views him as a potential second-round selection for next spring's draft.

Another LB to look out for!

Kansas redshirt junior LB Joe Dineen Jr. was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.

Dineen logged 2.5 TFL and a game-high 15 tackles in Saturday’s victory over Southeast Missouri State. Dineen becomes the first Kansas defensive player to win the honor since November 2016, when DE Dorance Armstrong Jr. won for his performance in Kansas’ 24-21 overtime upset victory over Texas.

Josey Jewell not named a finalist for the Butkus Award which is the best LB in the country. He is a finalist for the Nagurski Trophy which is for the best overall defensive player. I am sure he won't win and will get snubbed on that award.

After going through some stats - Frank Ginda from SJSU is the leading tackler in the FBS - 163 combined tackles, 89 solo/74 ast, 2 sacks, 3 PDs and 3 FF - not a finalist either. Another snub was Boise St LB Leighton Vander Esch - 105 total tackles, 3 sacks, 3 PDs, 2 ints, 3 FFs. Also not a finalist for the Butkus.

I like to think I’m pretty well in-tune with college football, but I’ve only ever heard of one of the finalists and that’s because he’s a badger (T.J. Edwards). I’m glad that when I google Butkus award the top two news stories are people saying Jewell should be in.

Paddy Fisher (Northwestern) and Colin Schooler (Arizona) named as FWAA freshman All-Americans. Redshirt freshman Fisher totalled 111 tackles (65 solo), 9 tackles for a loss, an interception, and four forced fumbles, while true freshman Schooler had 95 tackles, 13.5 for loss, four sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. Both, unsurprisingly, were "only" three-star recruits. Definitely two to look out for in the future playing for good schools!
