Just a few observations from recent bowl games I had a chance to watch.
Nice to see Kansas State beat odious UCLA but WR Dalton Schoen didn't play due to a broken collarbone. The problem going forward is the black "running" QB Delton who made big runs in the game seems unlikely to develop any sort of rapport with Schoen the next two seasons. (Both are sophomores). Looks like it will fall into the typical running black QB stalemating any positive development for a promising white WR routine. Schoen at least had some chemistry with the other two white QB's.
In the game last night Arizona has yet another one of those annoying black running QB's ( Heisman talk too) who put up huge numbers running but I have been pleased that the past few games Tate has been stymied running the ball. I think Purdue did a good job of containing him on the ground. One thing was unexpected. He probably was mentioned during the season but I somehow missed the fact they have a white junior WR Tony Ellison. His stat line was impressive hauling in two touchdowns on 4 catches for 102 yards. Strictly a slot his year end regular season stat line was 37-598-5. Interesting to note he tore his ACL his senior year in high school and was an accomplished sprinter. So he does have speed. Whether he can continue to develop and become a main target next season ( debatable because his black QB is a run first guy and we know how that usually turns out for white WRs) is something to keep an eye on next season. Purdue pulled out the game making the Big Ten 2-0 so far with physical Michigan State playing tonight. I hope they win.
Iowa, probably my favorite team this year, won a rough and tumble game against BC. Iowa's mainly white defense shut down BC in the second half. As mentioned above BC DE Zach Allen is very good NFL prospect so expect to see his name called in the 2019 draft.
Finally three things stood out to me in the mostly black Texas-Missouri tilt. Texas junior edge player Brecklyn Hager celebrated ex star LB Tommy Nobis by wearing the number 60 ( mentioned above) and he played well which bodes well for next season. Missouri has a rangy LB # 47 sophomore Cale Garrett and he racked up a ton of tackles. But to me I think there might have been a future Heisman candidate on the field and I am not talking about QB Drew Lock who will be in the running.
Freshman QB Sam Ehlinger has had one weird year mixing brilliant plays marred by untimely turnovers. But I like his aggressiveness and see a very bright future. He is roughly 6'2 220 LBs but he is a true dual threat QB. He didn't start but he got most of the second half snaps and played solid. A lot of talent so expect huge things from him. In fact on the game sealing TD he tore down the field after he handed it off and threw a great downfield block that opened the way for the TD.
It is too bad both Missouri and Texas are so sickeningly caste by the numbers. Can't imagine seeing a white RB, WR or DB on either of these teams down the road and I do not like the Texas coach caste hound Tom Herman.
