Nebraska has consistently been one of the most white friendly large programs throughout Caste Football’s tracking of the teams. This year however, unless things change, expect their half white days to be over. Bo Pelini has been recruiting a lot of athletes with room-brightening smiles and endless upside to play defense these days. The result? Last year, Nebraska gave up over 40 points multiple times, including a 70 point shellacking at the hands of Wisconsin in the Big 10 Championship Game. Fans have been complaining about little to no depth on the defensive side of the ball. Gee, are some of those highly recruited “athletic, game-changing, can’t miss prospects” not working out for Coach Pelini?
This year, Callahan’s last crew of white defenders is no longer at Nebraska, with Compton, Steinkuhler, Meredith, and Fisher all moving on. In addition, Chase Rome has transferred. Despite having a defense that got ripped his last year in 2007, Callahan actually recruited a ton of defensive talent, Including Compton, Fisher, (walk-ons) Matt O’Hanlon and Austin Cassidy at safety, Jared Crick, Steinkuhler, Zach Potter, Bo Ruud, Cam Meredith, and admittedly black players like Eric Hagg, Phillip Dillard, Suh, and Amukamara. Unless major strides are made this year, Bo’s first year of all his players will be a disaster on defense. Despite the “star recruiting” they've done, Nebraska is once again facing depth questions on the DL. No white players will be starting there this year, but DEs AJ Natter (freshman) and Walker Ashburn, and DT Broderick Nickens will all have a great chance to get playing time there this year. Ashburn and Natter will especially get a chance, with one DE recruit getting kicked off the team, and another having academic issues.
Linebacker looks to have a brighter outlook. The starting MLB spot is up for grabs with Will Compton having graduated, and Trevor Roach (right now) has the edge on David Santos, he of tremendous upside. Also, at the BLB position, Max Pirman is in a position battle now to start there because Thomas Brown, who was going to be the “playmaker” and “star” of the defense, managed to get himself kicked off the team. Incoming freshman OLB Josh Banderas will have a great chance to contribute to the defense straight away. The defensive backfield will be getting whiter in the next year or two, with two highly recruited and athletic white safeties, Nathan Gerry and Drake Martinez, will have the chance to contribute straight away as freshmen in the fall. Nathan Gerry is well built, and is the fastest man in South Dakota, while Drake played RB in high school, and will have his brother’s speed. Expect these two to be all Big-10 by their junior years.
The offense definitely has more white players than the defense does, including an all-white line, and one of the most dynamic QBs in the country in Taylor Martinez. “T-Magic” will be entering his 4[SUP]th[/SUP] year as a starter, and has improved each year. Husker fans will be hoping this year Taylor will take it to another level. Rex Burkhead will be a huge loss for Nebraska, but Martinez will have no shortage of great targets to throw to. There are several white WRs this year who will be vying for playing time, including the highly-touted Jordan Westerkamp, and Tyler Wullenwaber and Sam Burtch. Jake Long should be the TE, with Sam Cotton as his backup. Nebraska’s offensive line returns a bunch of experience, including Spencer Long, a true mauler who will be in the NFL next year. Qvale and Sirles will be the two tackles, while Long and Pensick will fill out the interior of the line. With the exception of RT Rodriguez, the rest of Nebraska’s line depth will be all white, including Zach Sterup, Mark Pelini, and Ryne Reeves. Since 2005, Nebraska has started 11, 13, 11, 12, 11, 13, 14, and 13 whites. So Nebraska will have the potential to start 10 whites this year, a decrease of three from last year. I hope this will be as bad as it gets for Nebraska.
