2013 Georgia Bulldogs

The Bulldogs under Mark Richt's tenure have been fairly predictable in terms of how few Whites play and at what positions, although there have been some changes recently. Since 2005, UGA has started 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6, 2, and 8 Whites at the 22 full time positions. With RG Austin Long's departure, there might be a chance for a couple of Whites to pick up that position over the course of the season. Hopefully the same thing will happen with one or more of the few White Georgia defenders. My projection is for 7 White starters in 2013, but we'll have to see what happens over the next few days when UGA will release the depth chart for the Clemson game.

Some Whites on the two deep include QB Hutson Mason, WR Rhett McGowan, LG Watts Dantzler, C Hunter Long, RGs Brandon Kublanow and Greg Pyke, OLB Chase Vasser, ILB Ryne Rankin, FS Connor Norman.

Thanks for that info, ref. There could be anywhere from 2-4 Whites starting on Georgia's offensive line. Hopefully they will get an equal opportunity to win starting positions and then do so.

Here's their week 1 starters vs Clemson. This is going to be a big nationally televised game, hopefully Bennett, Murray, Lynch and Norman do very well.

So the number will stay the same with Hall losing the starting job and Norman gaining one.

Bennett has apparently looked VERY good in camp. hopefully, he can pick up right where he left off last year ... dominating the affletes in the SECondaries.

what happened to tailback Kyle Karempelis? i guess his performances last year meant nothing.

Karempelis got some garbage carries in 2011. No carries at all in 2012. Granted, Georgia is pretty loaded at tailback, but Karempelis is better than the black kid who gets garbage carries.

The fullback position might be one to watch. Richt has been gay for Quayvon Hicks since he set foot on campus, making uncomfortable references to his physique whenever the opportunity has arisen. Merritt Hall started 6 games last year, and proved to be an excellent blocker. I'll be interested to see if Hicks holds the job. Richt will bend over backwards to start a black player, but will bench them if he has to, especially if pass protection is a problem. That's why Hall got the job as a walkon last year. If Murray starts getting his bell rung, Hall will be back in.

One of the funnier things I've seen this preseason is offensive guard Chris Burnette getting some accolades, while the DWFs can't understand how Dallas Lee can possibly be a starter. Burnette is ........ just awful. If there's a DT directly in front of him, and that's who he's supposed to drive block, then he does a passable job. Anything else and he's atrocious. I expect that he will be drafted in the 4th round.

Karempelis had 13 carries for 84 yards in the spring game, more than any other player. He was 4th string on the post-spring depth chart, but the week 1 is only 2-deep so not sure where he is now. Positive news is scholarship player Brendan Douglas, unsurprisingly listed as a fullback on literally every recruiting site despite 4.4 speed and a 40 inch vert, is still at tailback and could actually get some carries this year as a true freshman. Neither Vasser (senior) or Rankin (true frosh) are listed on the two deep and I'm not sure why. They were back ups on the post-spring and on all previews.

Good input gentlemen. I suspect Vasser & Hall will get some reps...& hopefully a solid amount. I think Bennett & McGowan have alotta talent & potential at WR/SE. I hope they get alotta passes (vs. the regular afr0letic targets).

Given the inexperience on defense, I would expect Vasser to play close to as much as a starter. He has started 5 games, and performed pretty well, but he is coming back from shoulder surgery. I would say he is an average player. He's undersized (listed at 219) as a 3-4 OLB, but has good quickness, instincts, and tackling skills. I hope Rankin redshirts, but he will probably play some. A white ILB will completely freak the DWFs out. They will wonder there's a fullback in on defense.

McGowan should get at least as many targets as last year; meaning, he will get 2 or 3 per game, and at least one of them will be at a critical time. He's who followed Kris Durham in high school, though he's not as talented as Durham. Interestingly, the kid who followed McGowan in high school is also a walkon. Why give scholarships to the white players when you can get them anyway? They probably qualify for the Hope, and Richt can get them in at UGA. McGowan, Hall, Norman ... each could be starting for any number of schools. Good enough to walk on and start for the #2 program in the SEC, but not good enough to get an offer from MTSU. Caste System at work.

Karempelis could have rushed for a 184 yards in the Spring Game & you get the feeling it still would not be good enough(wish he could go to smaller school like Woodhead did & still get noticed)...& Connor Norman's HS Coach could not figure out WHY he did not get a scholarship offer...hmmm

Interesting article on freshman Tailback Brendan Douglas who is getting much respect from his fellow team-mates...looked like he was #3 TB(behind two veterans) until his injury... get healthy quick!

Douglas turning heads at Georgia

“Every time I hear a superhero’s name I turn around because I think they’re talking about me,” Douglas said without a hint of conceit. “They’ve got a couple nicknames for me – the White Adrian Peterson; the White Hope.”

Well, not that it should matter, but Douglas happens to be a white tailback in a sport that has increasingly fewer of them at the higher levels. In a way, that made his performance
more noticeable to his peers.

“I’ve kind of had to prove myself a little bit more I think,” Douglas admitted. “A lot of people probably didn’t believe in me because I was white. But I’m just trying to show what I can do.”

WHATEVER DOUBTS anyone had melted away after the first Bulldogs night scrimmage in Sanford Stadium. Facing the first-team defense, Douglas led all rushers with 50 yards on seven carries. But the highlight was when he hurdled cornerback Shaq Wiggins.

“I was running on the offensive side of the field,” Douglas said. “Apparently they had been talking a little trash to Shaq the play before that and so it was the perfect timing, I think. He tried to go low on me and I knew it was coming and went ahead and jumped over him.”

Said Murray: “It was crazy. The whole offensive sideline ran on the field and went berserk.”

All of Douglas’ preseason efforts had him in tight competition with fellow freshman J.J. Green for the third tailback spot on the depth chart behind Gurley and Marshall until he suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee less than two weeks before the season opener against Clemson. The UGA medical staff ruled out surgery. But Douglas is out of Saturday’s game and likely the home opener against South Carolina as well.

Bulldogs coach Mark Richt isn’t thinking about redshirting Douglas, however.

“I think we still would like to see him play,” Richt said.

The head coach is certainly impressed with his late recruiting acquisition – especially his pass-blocking instincts.

“He has good vision and good balance and runs with power,” Richt said. “He’s got good speed and he’s a very, very good pass protector considering he’s a true freshman, And those are the things we look for as a coach. He did enough things as far as knocking people back at the end of runs where he got the players’ attention as well.”

Good article on Douglas. Thanks TwentyTwo. I wish he would have went to another school or redshirt this year. It will be difficult for him to get playing time behind Gurley and Marshall.


Did Karempelis walk-on? Did he have any offers out of high school?
