Plus he missed at least two seasons while he played in the KHL and he had some years in Pittsburgh where he clashed with Lemieux about his off ice personal life.

Jagr was full of zest for life, a strong anti-communist who was thrilled to be in the West -- he has always worn #68 in honor of the 1968 anti-Soviet uprising in his native country -- but that never affected his on-ice production.

Lemieux clashed with a lot of people, especially coaches. His "off ice personal life" never included working out but it did include lots of french fries, cigarettes, and golf games while his back was hurting.

hehe, sounds about right. i used to watch NHL religiously back then and by all accounts, that's how it was.

Just finished watchin' the Flyers-Rangers. Emery looked like a chump, giving up 4 goals in Philly's loss. His record for the year is @ 5-8.
Flyers had another pointless, last-second scrap ( w/10 seconds left in the game).. Guess it gave the stragglers left inside MSG, a parting gift for the road..

Is anyone else getting tired of the shoot-outs to end tie games? Maybe I'm jaded because the Wings have been piss poor at them this year but should a point really be earned just because of the luck involved in the shoot-out? The way it seems to be going is that the 5 min OT is a waste because the visiting team plays to kill it off and the home team overextends. And then they go to the shoot-out which has no relation to how the game was played.

For example a team could control play, pile up an advantage in shots, and generally play much better but find itself in a tie game at the end of regulation. That happens. It's hockey. The bounce of the puck is hard to predict. But to settle it with a shoot out that has no relation to the game, seems kind of unfair.

The shoot-out has also spoiled the thrill of a breakaway to me since they are so often not successful. I'm not sure what the percentages of success on the shoot out is, wait let me check---it's about 33% but it seems much lower in the ones I've seen lately. At one time the breakaway was considered a very high percentage scoring opportunity. But 33% doesn't seem that high to me. It's higher then a power play which ranges from the best teams at about 25% to the worst at 10%. And of course some players are much better then others. But still I thought it would be much higher.

A local hockey writer recently made the suggestion that the goals be made bigger to allow for more scoring, given that all the rules changes in recent years to increase offense haven't worked and the goalies now all look like the Michelin Man with their oversized equipment. I think the better answer is to limit the equipment so that they look like goalies of yore.

I don't like shootouts or the scoring system that rewards teams with a point for losing in OT or a shootout. You're right that a team's shootout participants are completely unrelated to what transpired on the ice before it got to a shootout, giving teams with better snipers an unfair advantage. Either go back to regulation ties, or lengthen the overtime to 10 minutes and if no one scores then it's a tie. The NHL is too gimmicky.

Apparently there's talk at the highest levels of the sport of getting rid of the shootout. I don't like the suggestion that's been made to make it three aside in OT.

The ageless wonder Jaromir Jagr reaches another milestone: He scored his 700th NHL goal today!! Another great achievement for one of the greats!

Jagr is currently 25th in the league in scoring with 20 goals and 34 assists for 54 points. Truly great stuff for a 42 year old. And it's cool that a guy who was on the first Penguins team to win the Stanley Cup back in 1991 is still playing and excelling.

Another old-timer still playing well is Daniel Alfredsson from Sweden, the long-time captain of the Ottawa Senators now playing for jaxvid's struggling Red Wings, who are trying to make the playoffs for the 23rd year in a row, an amazing record. Alfredsson was never an elite goal scorer but was good for 70 to 90 points a season for a long time in this era of relatively low scoring and has always had a very solid all-around game and was one of the first European captains of an NHL team. Now 41 years old, Alfredsson has 17 goals and 25 assists so far in 57 games this season for Detroit.

His goal with .6 left in OT was the winner against the Penguins. One of the strangest games I have seen. The Wings got three goals off of Penguin defensemen. And they blew a 2-0 lead in about 2 minutes. The Wings have some nice young talent. They should be much better in the near future.

Watching the Penguins play at Winnipeg last night, the Root Sports (Pittsburgh sports network) production crew kept showing close-ups of the Jets' two (half) black players, Evander Kane and Dustin Byfuglien, over and over again, particularly Byfuglien. It was as perverted as can be.

Reading the sports page today, I see that Kane is being persecuted by the White establishment:

Winnipeg Jets’ forward Evander Kane is being sued in British Columbia over an alleged assault in Vancouver last summer. A statement of claim filed on behalf of Vancouver resident Lev Makievsky says he was returning home from work Aug. 10, 2013, in the downtown area when he was assaulted by Kane, who is from Vancouver. It gives no further details of the alleged incident but lists a long series of injuries Makievsky says he incurred, including a concussion, and claims he has “permanent physical disability.” http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/winnipeg-jets-evander-kane-sued-for-alleged-assault/

The Penguins have looked bad ever since the Olympics. A lot of fans here are predicting another early exit in the playoffs, but hopefully they'll get their act together in time as the last 20 or so regular season games have been meaningless for them as they pretty much locked up the second seed a while ago. They've been dogged by a ridiculous amount of injuries during the season as well.

Yep... Though I'm still pissed that the Capitals somehow kept them to 22 freaking shots when they can't even keep bottom feeders below 30 shots and somehow still lose. Then the Penguins pretty much controlled the next game...

Ovechkin tonight looks like Ovechkin. Its kinda annoying though that I have to say he is playing angry. It should just be his normal play, hitting everyone and contesting every puck.
