just a quick post …

currently the leading scorer, rebounder, shot blocker, and assists man in NCAA Division One basketball are not black phenoms. "weird," huh?

as of this posting:

nation's leading scorer - Doug McDermott - 26.5 points-per-game (White)
nation's leading rebounder - Killian Larson - 11.6 rebounds-per-game (White)
nation's leading passer - Jason Brickman - 10.0 assists-per-game (Filipino)
nation's leading shot blocker - Jordan Bachynski - 4.2 blocks-per-game (White)

unless something crazy happens, Doug McDermott appears to be the runaway choice for National Player of the Year.

additionally, a couple of names i've not seen mentioned much (or at all) on the boards …

Memphis freshman forward Austin Nichols is likely going to be the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year. Nichols was just named as the Conference freshman of the week for the third-straight week, as well. Nichols, one of the VERY rare White athletes to play (and start!) for Memphis over the years, has personal-bests of 7 blocked shots, 12 rebounds, and 20 points this year. he has scored in double figures 6 straight games.

0124_MASP_umbkb5.jpg

remember the name Evan Bradds. a 6-foot-6 Belmont freshman, Bradds is already showing signs of becoming an impact player for the Bruins. the versatile guard/forward had his first career double-double (14 points and 10 rebounds) in Belmont's loss to Eastern Kentucky in their Ohio Valley Conference tourney championship game.

Thanks for that info, Jimmy! I had no idea that whites have been that dominate where they are the leaders in major stat categories like that!

If anybody has NBCSports, there's a nice game on between William and Mary (3 whites) vs. Delaware (2 whites) for a spot in the Big Dance!

Also, on ESPN later tonight, there will be BYU vs. San Francisco and Gonzaga vs. St. Mary's!

with my internet time limited these days due to having to keep the bills paid, it is unfortunate that we've not given the hardwood guys (and gals!) nearly enough attention this season. there has been an abundance of White excellence in 2013-14.

and speaking of the women's side of things, we've talked about Creighton's White-friendly team and their Wooden candidate Doug McDermott quite a bit, and deservedly so. however, the ladies' team at Creighton is also very fair. *pun!* and they have their own Big East Conference Player of the Year.

sophomore combo guard Marissa Janning was a Freshman All-American a year ago. this season, she topped it.

Janning, a 5-foot-8 guard from Watertown, Minn., led the Big East in scoring (18.3 points per game in conference play) and free-throw percentage (.861). she also finished second in 3-point field goals (76) and, despite being switched off the point early in the year, was eighth in assists per game (3.8) in the conference. she led the Bluejays in scoring and assists and was second in steals and rebounds.

ELBYAQRJVUQBEVZ.20131209170644.jpg

Marissa Janning

Creighton's women have 9 players averaging in double figures in minutes. 7 are White, including the other two standouts: seniors McKenzie Fujan and Sarah Nelson who were named to the All-Big East second team.

here is a good write-up on the trio.

the lady Jays lost in the semi-finals of the Big East Tourney today in double overtime.

Some stats from our guys tonight:

Stud North Dakota State guard Taylor Braun poured in a game-high 28 points tonight in the Bison's easy victory over Denver in the Summit League Semi-Finals.

David Stockon had a dominate game tonight in the Zags' dominate win over St. Mary's in the WCC semi-finals. Stockton had a game high 21 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists, with NO turnovers!

For Delaware, big man Carl Baptiste had an outstanding game in getting the Blue Hens into the Big Dance, scoring a game high 24 points and pulling down 8 boards in the 75-74 win.

Josh Adams ?

Do we have a resident fact checker here? Josh Adams the high flying soph guard out of Wyoming could be white but I need firm confirmation on that. Some pics he looks all white and others a bit of a mix but cannot tell for sure. Anybody?

He looks to be mixed. Corroborating evidence is that he was suspended one game for punching an opponent...tnb.

If you want some Caste speak for today, here it is. I'm off today, so I was watching the Notre Dame/Wake Forest game, and at half time, Digger Phelps and Jay Williams were doing a "blind resume" segment, where they look at three bubble teams' and their games against the Top 50, Strength of Schedule, etc. (Team A was 1-6 against the Top 50 with an 82 S.O.S., while Team B was 3-8 with a 48 SOS, Team C was 3-6 against the Top 50, and with a 28 S.O.S, easily the highest in the three teams. Team C also had the highest RPI at 35, better than A at 44 or B at 56. Digger and Jay both went with Team C without the names, no questions asked.

However, when the Teams were revealed, A was Pittsburgh, B was Florida State, and C was BYU. Naturally both "analysts" changed their picks instantly, picking FSU and Pittsburgh to get in over the Cougars, basing their entire argument over the fact that they happen to play in a better league then BYU. They go on to say BYU's best non conference wins were Stanford and Texas, but neglected the fact that Pitts nonconference schedule sucks, and that FSU's best wins were against VCU and UMass. Jay Williams even said that the WCC should be a one-bid league with just Gonzaga.

Anyways, back to some hoops stats...

Gonzaga ended up beating BYU last night, who may have lost guard Kyle Collinsworth to a knee injury (that would be a HUGE blow to the Cougars).

Tyler Haws led both teams in scoring with 24 points to go with 5 boards.

Gonzaga's scoring was very balanced last night, with no white players really standing out.

Pat Connaughton had a team-high 19 points and 5 boards in the Fighting Irish's loss to Wake Forest.

end of the year awards for our guys …

America East Conference Defensive Player of the Year - Brian Voelkel (Vermont)

A unanimous choice as Defensive Player of the Year, Voelkel led the Catamounts to one of the best defensive seasons in league history as they led the league in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense and held America East foes to under 52 points per game during regular-season play. Also an All-Defensive choice for the third time, he is sixth among conference leaders in steals and leads the league with 186 defensive rebounds. A first-team All-League choice for the second-straight year, Voelkel currently ranks fifth all-time on the league’s all-time rebound list.

American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year - Austin Nichols (Memphis)

Nichols was chosen as The American's top rookie after he averaged 9.3 points and 4.3 rebounds for the Tigers and was the lone unanimous choice on the conference's All-Rookie Team. He was named American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week four times, including in each of the last three weeks of the regular season.

Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year - Daniel Coursey (Mercer)

Mercer's Daniel Coursey picked up the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year award as the senior forward swatted an A-Sun high 61 shots; good for two per game. His 194 career blocks are fourth best in the A-Sun record books. Coursey pulled down 6.7 rebounds per outing this year; fourth-highest in the league.

Big East Conference Player of the Year - Doug McDermott (Creighton)

McDermott, the BIG EAST and nation’s leading scorer this season and seventh all-time scorer in NCAA history, was a runaway choice for BIG EAST Player of the Year honors announced hours before the tip-off of the BIG EAST tournament presented by NEW YORK LIFE at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

In Creighton’s first season in the BIG EAST, McDermott is averaging 26.5 points a game and is on a streak of 10 consecutive games with 20 points or more.

Big South Conference Freshman of the Year - Andrew Rowsey (UNC Asheville)

Rowsey concluded the regular-season as the Big South’s leading scorer with 19.9 points per game and is looking to become the first freshman to lead the Conference in scoring following this week’s VisitMyrtleBeach.com Basketball Championships. He paced the League with a school-record five 30-point games -- including a Big South-freshman record 41 points at Radford on Feb. 13 to set a Dedmon Center record, and in the process became the League’s first frosh to score 40 points in a game. Rowsey finished as the leading scorer in Big South contests at 23.0 points and shot 45.0 percent from the field against League foes to rank 10th. He was also first with 3.44 three-pointers per game, fourth in free throw percentage (84.0) and tied for fifth in steals (1.56) during the Conference season. Overall, Rowsey leads the Big South with 3.23 three-point field goals per game and is tied for third with 12 20-point games. A five-time Big South Freshman of the Week honoree, Rowsey set Asheville’s single-season three-point record with 97.

Big Ten Player of the Year - Nik Stauskas (Michigan)

Stauskas takes home the Big Ten Player of the Year award after leading the conference with 13 games of 20 or more points. A four-time Big Ten Player of the Week this season, Stauskas ranked among the top five with 17.0 points per game and a .447 shooting percentage from three-point range in Big Ten contests only. The sophomore earns the fifth Player of the Year award in program history. Stauskas was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection by both the coaches and the media.

Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year - Aaron Craft (Ohio State)

Craft collects Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year laurels after setting the conference record with 328 career steals. The 2012 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Craft becomes the sixth conference player to win the award twice and gives the Buckeyes their fifth individual defensive honor. Craft led the conference with 2.7 steals and 4.6 assists per game this season in Big Ten play.

Colonial Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year - Scott Eatherton (Northeastern)

Eatherton is the second Northeastern player, and first since 2006, to garner CAA Defensive Player of the Year accolades. The junior forward led the league with 54 blocked shots and had 16 games with two or more rejections. Eatherton was also second in the CAA and 14th in the nation in rebounding with 10.1 per contest. He grabbed double-digit caroms in 19 of his 30 contests.

Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year - Alec Brown (Green Bay)

Brown, who has 309 career blocked shots, was also named first-team all-conference and is averaging 15.8 points-per-game and 5.8 rebounds-per-game. the 7-1 center finished sixth in the conference in scoring while ranking third in 3-point field goal percentage, connecting at a 44.1-percent clip.

Ivy League Rookie of the Year - Spencer Weisz (Princeton)

Starting 12 of Princeton's last 18 games, Weisz scored the eighth-most points (258) in school history since freshmen became eligible in the 1978-79 season. He is the Tigers' fourth-leading scorer (9.2 ppg) and posted 13 double-digit scoring games. His 63 assists are the most for a Princeton freshman since Marcus Schroeder had 87 in 2006-07 and his 136 rebounds are the most for a Princeton freshman since Young had 160 in 1998-99.

Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year - Billy Baron (Canisius)

Senior guard Billy Baron of Canisius College has been selected as the 2013-2014 Pepsi MAAC Player of the Year by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s head coaches.

Baron, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound standout from East Greenwich, R.I., was a unanimous selection to the All-MAAC First Team, announced earlier this week. Baron finished the regular season as the second leading scorer in the MAAC, and third nationally, in scoring, averaging 24.4 points per game. Baron was also the second leading playmaker in the MAAC, averaging 5.2 assists per game. He led the MAAC in free throw percentage (.888), 3-point field goals made per game (3.2) and minutes played (39.0 per game). Baron. a four-time Player of the Week in 2013-14, is a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, presented to the NCAA Division I’s top point guard.

Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year - J.J. Mann (Belmont)

After leading Belmont to its second-straight Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship, Belmont senior guard J.J. Mann was named OVC Player of the Year.

Mann entered this season having played in 103 career games, including starting all 33 games in the team's 2012-13 OVC Championship season, but had never averaged more than 10.5 points/game as he was a role player on three-straight NCAA Tournament teams. This year, however, after the team graduated three starters Mann took over the leadership role and ranked first in the OVC in steals (2.1/game), second in free throw percentage (86.9%), third in 3-pointers made/game (2.4) and fifth in scoring (18.4 points/game). He made a splash on the national stage just four games into the season when he led the Bruins to an 83-80 upset at No. 11 North Carolina. Mann scored a then career-high 28 points in that game, including three 3-pointers in the final 1:02 as Belmont topped its first Top 25 team since December 2003. Mann scored 11 of Belmont's final 13 points as the team overcame an eight-point deficit with 2:37 to play and was named National Player of the Week by CBSSports.com NBCSports.com. He later scored 32 points in a win at Middle Tennessee State and a career-high 34 points in a home victory over Eastern Kentucky while being named OVC Player of the Week four times during the season. Mann also got the work done in the classroom and was named a first-team CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American, one of just five nationally.

Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year - Jordan Bachynski (Arizona State)

Bachynski is the first Sun Devil to be voted Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. The senior finished the regular season as the Pac-12 career leader in blocked shots with 309 over his four seasons. He also had three game-saving blocked shots at the buzzer that preserved ASU victories. Bachynski leads the nation in blocks, averaging 4.23 per game, and is sixth in the Conference in rebounding, averaging 8.4 per game. With 309 career blocks he is now the Pac-12 record holder, topping Anthony Cook of Arizona (278 from 1985-89) and his 128 blocks broke his Pac-12-season record from last year of 120.

Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year - Tony Wroblicky (American)

Wroblicky manned the middle for an American team that led the Patriot League in scoring defense both overall (60.1 ppg) and in League games (59.2 ppg). The Eagles also led the Patriot League in field-goal percentage defense both overall and in League play, with Wroblicky finishing second in the Patriot League with 56 blocks. He led all players in League games with 8.6 rebounds per contest, and was second for the season with 7.3 boards per game. Wroblicky also played a key role in an efficient American offense by finishing third in the Patriot League with a 59.4% mark from the field and scoring 12.2 points per game for the season and 13.2 per contest in League games. Wroblicky is the first Defensive Player of the Year from American.

by the way, Wroblicky also shoots his free throws one-handed. crazy.

Patriot League Rookie of the Year - Tim Kempton (Lehigh)

Kempton earned five Patriot League Anaconda Rookie of the Week awards, including four during League play, while finishing ninth in the Patriot League with 13.2 points per game and third with 7.0 rebounds per contest for the season and leading all freshmen in both categories. He also finished in the top 10 in the League by making 52.2% of his shots from the field. Kempton's numbers were similar in League action with 12.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest and an identical shooting percentage. He finished the regular season with six double-doubles.

to be continued …

Phil Forte (Oklahoma State) and Tyler Neal (Oklahoma), Big 12 co-6th man of the year award. My take: White players good enough to start, but get to come off the bench for the good of the afflete's egos.

I see that Jimmy mentioned Wroblicky from American... I'd also like to mention that American, with their 4 white starters, beat a nearly all-black Boston U. team last night to get into the NCAA Tournament!! Wroblicky had a nice game with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Gotta love March Madness!

more end of the year awards for our guys ...

Summit League Player of the Year - Taylor Braun (North Dakota State)

Braun, NDSU’s first Player of the Year selection since 2009 (Ben Woodside), leads The Summit League in scoring (18.0 ppg) and ranks among the top five in points per game (1st at 17.1), assists (3rd at 56) and rebounds per game (4th at 6.6) in league play. During the season, Braun collected five league Player of the Week awards, tying for the third-highest total on record. He posted four of the league’s eight 30-point games and one of its two 10-assist games during the season. Braun posted the highest individual scoring performance (31 points at Omaha) in league play this season.

West Coast Conference Player of the Year - Tyler Haws (BYU)

Tyler Haws is the first BYU student-athlete selected as WCC Player of the Year in its three seasons in the conference and the first for the Cougars since 2011 National Player of the Year Jimmer Fredette captured Mountain West Conference accolades in 2010-11. Haws averaged 23.5 points per game, while shooting 48.0 percent from the field during league play. Haws turned in the highest scoring game since 1990 when he scored 48 in a triple overtime game at Portland and scored at least 20 points 18 times and enters the 2014 WCC Championship with 1,855 career points in 100 career games, good for 15th place on the league's career scoring chart.

West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year - Brendan Lane (Pepperdine)

Brendan Lane is the third Pepperdine student-athlete to capture Defensive Player of the Year and the first since Cedric Suitt won it in 2001-02. A member of the 2013-14 WCC All-Academic Team, the senior forward led the league in blocked shots (2.5). In addition, Lane averaged 12.0 points on 49.7 percent shooting from the field to go along with 6.6 rebounds during league play as the Waves posted an upper echelon finish after being picked last in the preseason poll.

there were several big time performances in yesterday's conference tournaments around the country. i'll mention a few.

Doug McDermott scored 35 (14 of 22 from the floor, 7 of 10 from 3-point range) despite sitting much of the second half in Creighton's blowout win over DePaul. he was simply unguardable.

******************************

in only his eighth start of the season, UConn's Niels Giffey scored a career-high 24 points (including 14 of the Huskies first 32 of the game), going 9 of 11 from the floor and 6 of 8 from 3-point range in a win over Memphis. Giffey also collected a game-high 9 rebounds and tied for a game-high 2 blocked shots. one continues to "wonder" why the only White player to be "good enough" to see the floor for UConn doesn't get more playing time …

******************************

Aaron Craft scored 16 points, had 5 assists, and played his usual exemplary defense for Ohio State in a narrow win over Purdue.

*****************************

Boris Bojanovsky, the 7-foot-3 sophomore for Florida State, dunked in the game-winning basket just before the buzzer sounded in the Seminoles contest with Maryland. he added a game-high 12 rebounds, finished with 12 points (on 5 of 7 shooting), and had a blocked shot off the bench.

****************************

Alex Caruso was the best player on the court win Texas A&M faced off against Missouri. he played all 50 minutes of the double overtime game, finishing with game-highs of 28 points (8 of 14 from the floor), 7 assists, and 3 steals, and team-highs of 8 rebounds and 1 blocked shot. but the point guard's production wasn't enough to get the win.

***************************

a trio of White athletes combined to help South Carolina knock off the (nearly) all-black Arkansas Razorbacks yesterday. Mindaugas Kacinas, Laimonas Chatkevicius (both from Lithuania), and Brian Steele combined for 25 points, 19 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocked shots, and only 1 turnover in the win.

Arkansas, meanwhile, has gone 6 years without a win in the SEC Tourney … maybe they should recruit better basketball players …

Well, BYU is on the bubble of making the NCAA Tournament, but a number of their fellow bubble teams lost today, so I think BYU should be solidly in, barring some upsets from the major conferences making it.

We've had some nice performances from our guys today.

Joe Harris scored a game high 20 points in Virginia's win over bubble team Florida State today, hopefully knocking them off the bubble for good.

Aaron Craft and Amedeo Della Valle helped to ignite Ohio States' huge 2nd half comeback today against a surprising Nebraska team. Della Valle finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 steals, while Craft finished with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and a steal and block, along with playing his usual excellent defense, stifling Nebraska's best player in the 2nd half.

In the Minnesota-Wisconsin game today, Ben Brust absolutely exploded, scoring 29 points in the Badger's route of the Gophers. Frank Kaminsky had 6 points and a game high 12 rebounds.

In the MAC, Western Michigan and it's four white starters knocked off perennial MAC power Akron in an OT thriller! The Broncos went on an 18-0 in the 2nd half to get back into the game. Two of Western Michigan's best players are white guys. One of them is forward Shayne Whittington. Having watched him play, this kid is really good. The announcers were even saying that Western Michigan should be feeding him the ball more throughout the 2nd half and OT. Whittington finished out today with a game-high 18 points, while grabbing a game-high 13 boards, in addition to 4 blocks, 2 assists, and a steal. In addition, fellow forward Connar Tava is also a good player in his own right, scoring 16 points, tied for 2nd on his team, and also grabbing 12 rebounds, and 2 assists and steals. Hopefully, these guys will advance tomorrow in the MAC Championship game, which will be on ESPN at 6:30 Eastern I believe if anyone is interested.

Meanwhile, Akron has sure fallen a long way from just a few years ago. From four white starters just a few years back, they had 0 today, with 2-3 white guys coming off the bench.

We had some more great performances again last night:

Cameron Bairstow had another great game as New Mexico avoided Boise State's upset bid, 70-67. Bairstow finished with a game-high 23 points and 8 rebounds. Alex Kirk just missed out on a double double with 9 points and 11 boards.

Is there a hotter player in basketball right now than Doug McDermott? This kid has absolutely lit it up the last few games. Last night, he racked up 32 more points as his Bluejays beat Xavier 86-78. The Bluejays seem to be hot at the right time! Hopefully, we see a great tourney run from Creighton!

Most likely none of the pro white teams will make it to the Final Four. The champ will probably be one same teams they are every year. Kansas, Arizona, North Carolina, Syracuse, or Louisville. Woman's basketball is even worse, there choices are Uconn and Tennessee.

It looks like BYU guard Matt Carlino is transferring. He graduates, so he'll be able to play right away next year. Best of luck to him at his new school!

http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcspo...-transfer-from-byu-has-immediate-eligibility/

Also, NC State's Tyler Lewis (former McDonald's All-American) is transferring as well, after NC State's coach recruited right over him after not even one year, along with a more affletic transfer coming into to compete at PG as well. This article says he's looking for a "better fit."

http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/03/29/3744056/lewis-to-transfer-from-nc-state.html

Kale Abrahamson will be leaving Northwestern: http://hawkcentral.com/2014/03/17/ex-w-d-m-valley-star-abrahamson-decides-to-leave-northwestern/

Austin Etherington is leaving Indiana as well:

http://www.indystar.com/story/sport...erington-indiana-basketball-transfer/6829193/

This is a bit old, but Luke Fischer also transferred from Indiana, and will be going to Marquette.

Also, we know that Alex Murphy left Duke and will be a Gator.

I'm very excited for his future there, especially since his back court mate will be super shooter Kellen Dunham. Had he stayed at NC State, Lewis would've been the Wolfpack's only white scholarship player next year.

Lewis is simply a great point guard... watch some of these passes from this last year! He's very quick, and has some great court vision! Butler's getting a great player!
