Back in 2007 Garrard did well enough "dinkin and dunkin" to garner a huge contract from then Jags GM James Harris. Since then, for the most part, he's struggled, although he's picked up the pace in recent weeks. A few weeks ago, don't forget,Trent Edwards was claimed in hopes he could replace him. Vick has done well, so far, as has Jason Campbell....But this isn't "ground breaking stuff", not even by a long shot!
Back in 2000,4 of the 6 NFC teams that made the playoffs (as well as Tenn in the AFC) started African American quarterbacks. By the way, Baltimore, which began the season starting AA Tony Banks, won the Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer at the helm, over the Giants who started a white quarterback. This is about the sametime that loathsome SI writer Rick Rielly predicted white QB's would soon be as common as black WR's and then said he "couldn't wait to see it".
Of course, as Reilly predicted, teams started chasing black college QB's with vim and vigor -- Vick was #1 overall the next spring, despite posting very modest college stats. The Vikings, believe it or not, had 5 black QB's on their roster (3 on the 53 man roster & 2 PSquad) at one point thanks to Denny Green's largess aimed squarely at QB that looked like him (not his multiple white, blondewives). Heck, the Cowboys traded up for Quincy Carter in round 2, whohad beentoldby Mark Richt that he might as well jump early to the NFL, because he would not start over David Greene if he returned to Georgia. Hewas losinghis college job,but was still a coveted 2nd rounder? Tellsyou how bad Jerry Jones wanted a black QB
As far as more black QB's being good for white RB's and WR's, I don't buy it. Back in the latter part of the 1990's ESPN did a whole thing about it this. Sterotypes were breaking, ect...Kordell Stewart said he hoped his success would open things for Mike Alstott and other white RB's and WR's. It didn't happen....Matter of fact, dare I say, guys like Brent Celek and Riley Cooper will become more irrelevant with Vick at QB....They were against the Redskins. And where is Chad Hall, who played well @ Tenn with Kolb at the helm? Looks like Jerome Harrison, who Hillisdrove out in Cleveland, has now made the Woodhead clone (Hall) totallyirrelevant. Don't expect Vick to lobby Fat Bastard on Hall's behalf.
