This really sucks. I just found out the universalsports.com isn't covering it. Then on top of the eurosport and bbc are not for viewing in the united states. There are some places offering it for a fee. Not sure what I'm going to do yet. How can it be so hard to see the biggest track championships of the year! This is insane!

poor Carolina Kluft has only just made it to the LJ final (6.62) as last qualifier, beating another woman with the same distance by virtue of a better 2nd jump.

I guess 12 athletes at 6.62 or above is pretty decent though

Carolina Klüft had multible hamstring problem. I Think this is the first competion for a long long time where she dont feel pain. Actually she bettered her season best with 20 centimeters.

This after a lot of people in Sweden said that she shouldnt even be here.

Lets hope she is ok for the final. Her comment after the qualifying was:

"I´m used to do seven events in two days. A think I´m able to manage two starts in two days."

Well, Lemaitre looked pretty good - fastest qualifier. I hope whatever has been bothering him will not be a factor.
On the other hand, none of our other guys looked good.
Blum to the finals? - No, I don't think so. He was the slowest qualifier.
Maybe DiGregorio, Unger, Collio, and/or Cerruti.Edited by: jacknyc

Why are you so negative jacknyc? It doesn't matter how anyone looked in this round. Blum didn't have to run fast. It's about saving yourself for the semis and finals. Don't give up on the kid so quick. In his heat he had one the strongest negative winds of -1.6! So give the kid a break. He may still make the finals.

Lemaitre looked good. His starts scare me but he only needs to nail his start in the final. He can run down anyone else but Chambers. He can't let him get too big of a lead in the final. I'm sure he also has the false start thing in the back of his mind. Christophe would rather be the last one out of the blocks and still get to compete compared to being disqualified. We do not need to see a repeat of last years World Champs in Germany.

The best way predictor for how someone is going to run in a sprint race, is to look at how he ran in his most previous races.
Guys that have run well in the month before the championship, are most likely to run well in the championships.
Guys that run well in the heats are the ones that run well in the finals.
Not always! Because some guys get spent in the rounds and don't have it for the final.

I don't want you to get the wrong impression - I always root for our guys. Always have, and always will. But I've been following the sport a long time. And from what I saw today, outside of Lemaitre, I was not impressed with any of our guys. I guess I am a little early with my disappointment - sorry - but I'm usually right.
Anyway, I'll keep my quiet until the finals, and we'll see what happens.

I hear you jacknyc. I agree that our guys have looked average all year in the 100 outside of Lemaitre. I just am trying to stay positive and keep everyone here positive. I'm guilty of the same thing too at times. I'm trying to think positive more and bring more positive energy to this board. If white sprinters can't get support here, then they are really in trouble.

Your a great guy with alot of knowledge of track. I enjoy reading your posts so please keep posting. Just trying to stop being so negative myself and hoping we can all be a little more positive but no worries. Be yourself my friend. I would have to say that either Unger or Collio have the best chance to final outside of Lemaitre. The reason I still think Blum is a sleeper is his age. He might handle the rounds better. I know heprobably won't finish in the top 5butI wouldjust liketo see him make the finals would help him going into next year. The kid has lost alot of confidence just like Pickering. I would like to see Blum get that swagger back. He has been stuck on the same p.b. for several years now. Such a shame with his talent.

The Semi Finals are going to be interesting. I am not going to plan on sleeping much this week. Too amped up for these races. Like a caged tiger. Hell I feel like I'm racing still because I get so hyped up for these finals.

Come on Pepe! We believe in you. This is your time to shine. You are a prodigy and you will inspire countless kids in France and around the world. Good luck to you in the semi finals!Edited by: white lightning

"Chambers (slight favourite due to his big time experience)
Lemaitre (will need a new PB to win)
Mbanjock may medal with a 10.10
Ndure may dislodge Mbandjock for that bronze.
Obikwelu will SB and make the final
Ceruttti....I think maybe two Italians will final
James Dasuolu,
Angel Rodriguez, ....... NOT ON THAT HEAT RUN
Ryan Moseley,
Jason Smyth as a wild card."

I'll pick Di Gregorio as my other Italian and drop Rodriguez based on this run. Replace him with old friend Matic Osnavikar

It would be nice to see Matic make one last final. Alot of people here may forget that he won the bronze medal in the Euro Champs back in 2006 running a 10.13 in the final. That was by far his best year. True story. I have talked with Matic a few times and I have several autographed cards and pics. He is a very nice guy and he has had a descent career.

I'm still thinking Blum can pull a shocker. It's a long shot, but I would love to see him make the finals. There is no reason Collio or Cerutti shoudn't make it if they run up to their ability.

A little side note on Christophe and his time.

First round heat time of 10.19 by Christophe Lemaitre tied the fastest
first round time of 10.19 by Pietro Mennea in1978 and Max Moriniere in 1990.

<H2 =t4__element_full__h2>All three sprinters on directly
<B =News_Details>The Heats over 100meters for the German sprinters on Tuesday evening at the European Championships in Barcelona (Spain) a warm-relaxed.[/B]<B =News_Details>Tobias Unger (LG Stadtwerke München), Alexander Kosenkow (TV Wattenscheid 01) and Christian Blum (LAC gas Chemnitz) moved directly to the next round of the top 24 in one.[/B]

Tobias Unger was in his lead in 10.35 seconds only to the defending champion Francis Obikwelu (Portugal, 10.27 seconds beaten).Alexander Kosenkow (10.44 sec) and Christian Blum (10.57 sec) reached fourth places respectively and were thus more.

The favorites brought in a first position.Christophe Lemaitre (France) ran 10.19 seconds in the fastest time. The Britons Dwain Chambers (10.21 sec) and Mark Lewis-Francis (10.23 sec) and Martial Mbandjock (France, 10.26 sec) remained alongside Francis Obikwelu is still less than 10.30 seconds.

Responses to the competition:

Tobias Unger (LG Stadtwerke München):
"We have decided to come to three of the semi-finals. Tomorrow we want to attack. My run was again much better than the Germans. Here we had a headwind. This one has noticed. There are so five or six people mad quick. then everything is possible. are two or three places left for the final. Tomorrow I give everything to me to grab one of them. We must then have a bit of luck. I hope that I will have more respect for the race. Today I was outside and next to me had no quick people. "
Alexander Kosenkow (TV Wattenscheid 01):
" "It was clear that my race is the closest. So it was. With 10.45 you are here now sixth. It was hard to walk - we had a strong headwind. I ran my own race, have only seen that the Italin slightly in front of me was. The obligation is fulfilled. There will be three semi-finals. With such a Konstelation are really only the strongest on. In each run two shells in there. But if I play the conditions and my times from the last few weeks can confirm the finals may be possible. But that would be added. "
Christian Blum (LAC Chemnitz natural gas):
" "It was the goal to finish in the top four. This was in order, with the wind. That is not my thing. As I think most people are physically. Hopefully tomorrow are still a few more people there. I thought to definitely fun to run in the stadium here. The track is pretty tough and pretty fast. I'll attack in the semis, have fun and maybe I can annoy the others. patzt If anyone, I am there and use my chances. "

I agree with Jack. I have watched track as a fan to a hardcore fan/handicapper and if your form is off it doesn't miraculously come back for a major meet. It follows a similar peaking pattern to horse racing. It would be wonderful to see a White sprinter win the Euro century for the first time since probably Wells did it back in the early 80's. I think the top two are a cinch and who has the better race will take it. The bronze medal is wide open though. Edited by: white is right

I have to agree with JimmyChitwoood. I love watching the Decathalon. These guys are the best athletes in the world. To do 10 event in 2 days is crazy. Amazing speed, power and endurance. Very few people have the dedication to train in ten different events! The 100 was very entertaining.

The Womens 100 Meters will be starting in about an hour. Looking forward to it. Two of my favorite ladies are Verena Sailer and Ivet Lalova. They among many other european women sprinters are very easy on the eyes. I love watching them. Would mind dating a few of them as well. A guy can dream can't he. Haha.

WL, Your favorite Verena Sailer looked really convincing in her heat. A clear victory with a good time into a strong headwind. She could wind this thing.

Sailer fastest qualifier. I hope Turner wasn't trying too hard!

What the heck's happened to Lalova over the years. Ottey has run faster than that recently (at 50)Edited by: mastermulti

Sailer won her heat but Lalova was very slow. Ivet Lalova is out of the competition. Glad to see Laura Turner advace for England out of lane 7.
