I know we are still around a couple of weeks away but I figured I would start the thread a little early so we can discuss things here. The 2010 European Track and Field Championships in Barcelona is going to be historic! I cannot wait. Here is a short film with some of the athletes that will be representing Great Britain.

I have a favor to ask of you guys. A couple of years ago, I remember seeing a few videos with the 100 meter winners of the European Championships over a few decades. They had one video for the 100 meter and one for the 200 meters winners over around 20 years or so. If someone can find those videos, please post them. I want to watch them again. Thank you in advance guys in your help to find them.

Some bad news. One of the best 800 meter runners in the whole world,Yury Borzakovsky has pulled out of the Euro Champs. He had an injury and will not be able to compete. This is very sad as he is one runner I have enjoyed watching for many years and he has won medals at every level. I hope he gets better so he can be ready for the World Champs in 2011 and the Olympics in 2012.

I'd love to see vision impaired sprinter Jason Smyth do well from Ireland. He looks to be capable of high 10.20s legal if conditions are nice

Speaking of Smyth, he can only see about 10% of what a normal person can. That is pretty close to blind if you ask me which makes his ability to sprint even more incredible. It's not always easy for a normal sprinter to stay in his lane. This kid is amazing.

only 10% wow....

hey, maybe when he looks down he thinks he's black because of that vision impairment and that helps his confidence LoL .

Whatever, it'll be good to watch with objective eyes.. there'll of course be no Aussies for me to cheer on so I'll go the Irish boy to make the final

We are only two days away guys. It starts on Tuesday. We need to get the discussion going here on the 2010 European Track and Field Championships. The opening round of the 100 mens competition is on Tuesday. Any predictions on times?

well, I think we'd all agree who are first and second favourites for the 100m men.
Maybe a guess as to the athletes who'll make the final.
Times are to difficult unless we know the conditions, but warm and legally windy may see two sub 10s.

Chambers (slight favourite due to his big time experience)
Lemaitre (will need a new PB to win)
Mbanjock may medal with a 10.10
Ndure may dislodge Mbandjock for that bronze.
Obikwelu will SB and make the final
Ceruttti....I think maybe two Italians will final
James Dasuolu,
Angel Rodriguez,
Ryan Moseley,
Jason Smyth as a wild card. I would put Hession before him but he's not shown too much yet this season and Jason's confidence is on the up

I can't get too excited about the Germans after their nationalsEdited by: mastermulti

Heat 5 is loaded with Cerutti, Lemaitre and others. I will give you my sleeper pick to make the finals. Your going to be shocked. It would be easy to pick Collio or Cerutti but I'm going to say a suprise finalist will be Christian Blum. He won't medal but he will make it to the finals. In the future, he will be one to challenge for bigger and better things.

You heard it from the me. I will stand by my prediction. Blum to make the finals!

out of left field, I'm going for the Poles to push the English in the 4 x 400 but just get beaten. They always have solid relay teams

I can see that my friend. They are always technically solid and they usually have great athleticism as well. The Polish People in general have no fear. I admire them greatly.

The 400 Mens Final at the 2010 Euro Champs is going to be the most hotly contested final of the whole championships in my honest opinonl. Four different sprinters could win the gold!

just as an aside, here's a great fun article I've found about a great ex Euro champ, Alan Wells, who was asked if he'd run in a 100m race prior to the London Grand prix in 1999.

article

imagine running 100m with "no power anymore" and little training at 46 years old and running 11.45e (which he did)Edited by: mastermulti

Phenom. Legend! Words can not describe my admiration for this man. He was and always will be one of the best and classiest sprinters of all time. A gentleman and an phenom at the same time. If only we had more Allan Wells types in the world. Lemaitre actually reminds me of Wells and I'm hoping he can obtain the same olympic success someday in the future! Edited by: white lightning

white lightning, I'm also going to say Blum to make the finals. It would be nice to see Blum drop a new PB. also WL, I have copies of all the European Champs from the past on DVD. I'll dig them up and send them to you.

That sounds great albinosprint. I'm sure I will be talking to you on the phone this week. We have been waiting for the Euro Champs for a very long time.

It''s almost time for PepeLeFlew to show Chambo that you can win without cheating! This is going to be a very fun week. I hope Pepe goes for the double!

If you can get eurosport or bbc it is on for free. If not, universalsports.com has coverage of every single day. It will cost a little money but it is well worth it. I recomend it. If I can find a free link, I will post it. I wouldn't chance it though. This is history in the making.
