just read it as well! he's got good size for a safety, 6'1 and 212 lbs plus even scout.com has him as 4.4 guy. we might be looking at, heh, i was going to say Matt Giordano, but look where that would leave us. Eric Weddle then!

How about Iowa SS Tyler Sash! He has 4 INTs for 104 yards on the year, 25 tackles, and a forced fumble, and he's only a redshirt sophomore. He faces a huge test against Penn State this week, but it should be a good game. Tyler was BIG 10 Co-Defensive Player of The Week after the Iowa State game. In a funny twist on usual Caste practice, Tyler is being referred to as a CB by several news outlets.

Iowa's Tyler Sash is excellent, but so is his running mate in the Hawkeye secondary. don't forget about [rul=http://www.hawkeyesports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/greenwood_brett00.html]Brett Greenwood[/url], he's also a sophomore and starts at the other safety spot.

Greenwood is second on the team in tackles (to Sash) with 23 (12 solo) and he also has 2 interceptions and 3 pass breakups already. he's a good one, too.

another guy to remember is Minnesota's Kyle Theret. the junior starts at free safety, but he's also started at cornerback for the Gophers. he is normally among team leaders in tackles, and is also their top cover guy.

Colorado State has two impressive defensive backs.



senior free safety http://www.csurams.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/kubiak_klint00.html]Klint Kubiak leads the team in solo tackles and has an interception. he's a rare White db who is regarded as an NFL prospect.

senior cornerback Nick Oppenneer is as close to a shutdown corner as there is in college football, but of course gets very little respect. unlike most corners, he is very physical in run support. and it's probably no surprise that he began his career as a walk-on.

Kent's FS Brian Lainhart has 24 tackles and 3 interceptions on the year. not 100% sure he's white, but he looks like any of my spanish teammates (mind you, not hispanic, spanish).

another white safety, AUB sophomore Chase Daniel has 15 tackles and 3 interceptions, 1 in each game. last year as a true frosh he already had 2.

btw Iowa's Brett Greenwood is playing real well this season as well, making for a deadly tandem with Sash, 6 balls intercepted between the two of them.

There is only Safety tandem in FBS with more INTs than Sash and Greenwood, and that is at UCLA. Tyler Sash is now number 1 in Interception return yardage in Iowa history, with 251 yards.

I dont buy the"always in the right place" explanation that seemed to be a theme throughout this write up. You can still be in the right place and not make the tackle, not make the pick, or not make a play! Kyle cmon buddy you don't make 121 tackles as a Jr RS by being in the right place. I dont want to ride him to hard because i may have made to big of a deal out of nothing.

He is the first white DB to be a consistent starter for State in over a decade.

That is absolutely outstanding that Smith is doing well in the Miss State secondary. If a white guy can start and do well as a DB at place like MSU, then it's (almost) possible anywhere (FSU being the only place I can think of, as Bowden has publicly discredited white athletes)!

FSU has a White safety that is a true freshman. Whether they bulk him up for linebacker remains to be seen.

Good call deadlift, sometimes even I can be think things not possible in the caste system when in fact they may be. Looking at his size, I don't think he can move up to LB at only 184 lbs. We'll see. Even though I despise coaches like Bobby Bowden and Houston Nutt, I would give credit where it is due if they changed their ways and played guys like Justin Bright at safety.

check out this column on bleacherreport.com that talks about the "NFL talent" on Northwestern's defense. i'll copy/paste the relevant bit as the author discusses the two best players according to the team's coaching staff (who are White safeties Brad Phillips and Brendan Smith) and describes them as marginally gifted and lacking in speed and size ... no surprise, of course.

Brad Phillipsâ€"Safety, 6'4"Â￾, 215
Phillips has a very outside shot at the pros, and would probably be undrafted if he makes a team. He has durability issues, but is a tough guy and plays vicious defense. His speed and coverage skills are suspect, but he can change a game with his playmaking ability and punishing hits.

He had shoulder surgery in the offseason and many teams will recognize a hard-hitting safety that has body problems. I still expect a team to take a chance on him.

Brendan Smithâ€"Safety, 6'1"Â￾, 210
Smith is unlikely to make the pros. He makes all the right play calls from the safety position, is elusive, and has a lot of playmaking ability. He's the ideal centerfielder for a defense.

That said, his coverage abilities and speed are reasons for concern. He has not faired well in coverage this year and often gets beat by faster receivers. He doesn't necessarily have NFL safety size, either. His best shot is as an undrafted free agent.

i don't think i need to list all the safeties in the NFL who are smaller than 6-1, 210-pounds, do i? furthermore, the coaches and his teammates admit that Brad Phillips is probably the best athlete and definitely the best defensive back on the team ... yet, he isn't as good as the black db that the author discusses? interesting ... these two guys were both preseason favorites to be All-Big Ten safeties, yet they aren't talented? weird.

i should add that the author is correct in that the NFL won't be very interested in either of these terrific athletes, but it isn't for the reasons he mentions ... nope, the reason is much more obvious to the naked eye. Edited by: Jimmy Chitwood

Safety should be white dominated at the pro level just from all the great white high school running backs who are forced to switch to that position in college. Same with linebacker.
