It remains to be seen if Jim Zorn is a competent NFL head coach -- the indications from the Redskins' regular season opening game were not comforting -- but he is clearly a disciple of the Caste System.
The '08 Redskins have even fewer white players than the rosters compiled by Joe Gibbs in his second coaching stint with the franchise.
The best known paleface on the team is tight end Chris Cooley, who is one of the best and most consistent producers at his position. Last year Cooley had career bests in yards (786) and TDs (8).
Todd Yoder, the one-time ace wideout from Vanderbilt who had to balloon up in size to play in the NFL, is a backup TE.
13-year veteran Pete Kendall is the starting left guard. Casey Rabach out of Wisconsin is the center.
Long-time starting tackle Jon Jansen has for some reason been demoted to backup. Long-time Jet Jason Fabini, Northern Iowa's Chad Rinehart, and Justin Geisinger are also backup linemen.
After black starting quarterback Jason Campbell was injured in the latter part of the '07 season, Todd Collins took over and led what had been a struggling team into the playoffs. It was only the second time in his 14 year career that Collins had garnered regular playing time and he played almost flawlessly. In many cities this would be cause for a "quarterback controversy," but since Campbell is black and was drafted in the first round he seems destined to get quite a bit more time as the starter before he is demoted if found to be lacking what it takes.
Rookie Colt Brennan is Washington's third quarterback, and he may end up as the starter down the road if Campbell continues to underachieve.
White defensive players consist of one, strong safety Reed Doughty, who became the starter after the death of last year of Sean Taylor.
NUMBER OF WHITE STARTERS: 4
APPROXIMATE NUMBER OF WHITE PLAYERS ON 53 MAN ROSTER: 14
GRADE: F
