wow! what a strange way to end a very strange game...

i NEVER would've thought Vinatieri would miss a chip-shot field goal.

I had a strange feeling that Vinatieri mightmiss. But it seemed like the Colts were gypped by that illegalformation call that moved the ball back 5 yards. Otherwise the field goal attempt would have been the length of an extra point try. It was definitely a very strange game.

I don't understand why teams always play for the field goal instead of the TD. If the Colts had scored the field goal, they'd have been up by only 1 pt, with more than a minute left on the clock for the Chargers to move the ball and try their own field goal. But if the Colts score a TD, they're up by 4, there would have been less time on the clock, and the Chargers would have in turn had to score a TD to win the game.

I believe the Colts erred in playing it safe. Even Madden and Michaels were announcing that the Colts should go for the field goal. They didn't mention the score differential, or how the Chargers special teams tore up the Colts all night.

This game epitomizes why Dungy will never be Belichek and the Colts will never be the Patriots. Belichek would have went for the TD from the minute they received ball on their last drive, and the Patriots would have won the game.

When the measurement showed that the Colts were inches short of a first down, I had the same "strange feeling" that Don had. The instinct that you develop from observing pro football for many decades told me that the FG attempt was going to fail either through a miss or a block.

Thing is, San Diego had no offense to speak of the whole game. Any kind of a lead by the Colts would have been pretty safe the way the game unfolded.

HAHAHHA BRADY IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN MANNING! Brady had no receivers last year and still won games and never threw 6 INTS in a game. Once Manning loses his top receivers he's ont that great anymore. Watching those awful Colts reserve receivers had me thinking: Where's John Standeford now? The Colts could have used those hands, route running, and size.

Dude, I understand the Standeford comment, but why would anyone who posts here possibly be happy when Manning does poorly?

We all know he doesn't have the same "it" that Brady has, but besides Montana, who does? I my eyes, I wish them both the best every season and every game. Why? Why not? They are the best two QB's and players in the NFL (even the caste-media agrees). They both exhibit the qualities of a perfect QB, all while making hype-machines like Vick, Young, Leftwich, McNair, Campbell, etc, look foolish in comparison. Those loser black QB's with "unorthodox" styles could have been the only QB's allowed to play in the caste NFL without the help of Manning, Brady, and a myriad of other great white QB's.

PS - I hope Standeford is laughing at Dungy for cutting him (dozens of times throughout the past 2-3 yrs).Edited by: Thrashen

No question Manning and Brady are the best in the game. But I am a huge fan of the Pats and anti-fan of the Colts (Although I root for Giordano, Gonzalez and Clark). I just seriously dislike Manning. Obviously he's the most talented quarterback in the game. No one can throw the ball like him. But Brady's better.

Did you see the drop by the 49er WR on the long ball! Tons of these every week, yet Matt Jones gets crucified for a mere couple drops! F U Del Rio!

Alex Smith is a bust. I know all the counterarguments some people here will make. I won't find any of them convincing. He can't play.

Better to admit he is a bust now, and send him to another team at the end of the year so he can get a second chance. Otherwise he is going to become very hated by the people in the bay.

It doesn't surprise me that you think you will find counterarguments unconvincing. I'm not sure I've seen you change your mind once on this forum, even after having been presented with irrefutable facts.

But I won't be making a counterargument in this case. He may indeed be a 'bust,' as in 'one who fails to meet expectations.' This is the first I've seen Smith play this year, but so far the 49ers look like a typical NFL franchise to me - an offensive line that can't block, receivers that can't catch, running backs complaining and bitching at the linemen, etc, etc. I don't know what we should expect of Smith under those circumstances.

I'm not even going to bother running the stats. I'm sure Alex Smith is still better than Tarvaris Jackson, Vince Young, and Steve McNair, all of whom are still starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Well, for now anyways..

Anybody else catched that shot steve young took at DaMarcus and the raiders? Jaws and him were talking about scout lacking the knowledge to find good QB and young said something like " wow a 6'6 guy who can throw 75 on one knee, lets give him 25 millions! " that was real funny

I thought maybe he was referring to Kyle Boller, who in college would get on his knees and throw it through theuprights from midfield. The only quarterback Young mentioned by name as a flop was Jim Druckenmiller. At least he didn't ritualistically mention Ryan Leaf. . .
