Just when it seemed as if Andy Reid might be perceiving the reality that white men can play football, he reverted to being, well, Andy Reid. Despite starting a white receiver and a white safety, overall whites play a very small role on the 2007 Eagles.

Purged in the final preseason cuts were WR/KR Jeremy Bloom, WR Michael Gasperson, WR Zac Collie, and CB Dustin Fox. Bloom is the world-class skier who starred at Colorado returning kicks and as a wide receiver. One imagines that a two-sport black star with such a pedigree would also be summarily dispatched from the NFL without as much as a single season to prove himself, but not very easily.

The Eagles did sign WR Kevin Curtis as a free agent, after it looked like the 29-year-old Curtis was going to spend his entire career in St. Louis behind past-his-prime Isaac Bruce. Curtis has great speed and route-running ability and outstanding hands. He's not tall but he's tall enough. With the Rams, Curtis had long touchdown receptions in both the regular season and playoffs. His talent is not in question; only whether Reid will let him start or bench him the first time he drops a ball.

Matt Schobel, a decent receiving tight end, is second on the depth chart at that position. Third stringer Brent Celek, a rookie out of Cincinnati, showed outstanding hands and after the catch running ability and looks like he can be an elite player.

A. J. Feeley and rookie Kevin Kolb (a surprise high draft choice in April) back up the Caste System's Great Black Hope at quarterback, oft-injured Donovan McNabb, who is coming back from a torn ACL in 2006.

Veteran Jon Runyan anchors the offensive line at right tackle. Todd Herremans starts at left guard. Scott Young is a backup guard.

Sean Considine is the starting strong safety. Although he only started for part of '06, Considine racked up an impressive 106 tackles. Like almost all white players who start on defense he makes more tackles than the average for his position. Considine was a third round pick out of Iowa in '05.

Rookie Stewart Bradley from Nebraska is a backup at all three linebacking positions and stands a good chance of being a starter at one of them within a season or two.

Third year man Matt McCoy out of San Diego State opened the 2006 campaign as a starting outside linebacker but is now a backup.

NUMBER OF WHITE STARTERS: 4

APPROXIMATE NUMBER OF WHITE PLAYERS ON 53 MAN ROSTER: 14

GRADE: F

what about Chris Gocong? i consider him white, he's probably some kind of mix but definitely on the white side. plus, media loves to hate on him, which makes me almost sure.

It's a matter of opinion on some guys I guess. I've just never considered Gocong white from the pictures I've seen. Don't know what his background is actually. Last year I listed Brandon Chillar as white but not this year. I especially try to look at "hispanic" players who are often dismissed as non-white when a fair amount of them are white, Tony Romo and Anthony Gonzalez being good examples.

yup. i am not sure of his background, i was basing my opinion more on the way media treats him. he is definitely mixed, Asian or PI from the looks of it.

Kevin Curtis is laying waste to the Lions' secondary. He has 205 yards and 3 TD's and it's only halftime.

Kevin's big game should give him some traction. Thus far he's logged 302 yds. on 17 catches.

Being Ukrainian on my father's side, seeing the Birds dressed in the Ukrainian colors warmed my heart today.

As they did back in the days when they dressed in kelly green (I'm Irish on my mom's side).

Of course, all that applies especially to the white players.

from rotoworld.com:

Eagles waived LB Matt McCoy and signed LB Akeem Jordan from their practice squad.

The Birds are admitting a mistake with McCoy, a second-rounder two years ago. Jordan nearly made the club out of camp. He'll play special teams.

right, giving up on a second round draft pick after two seasons (last year he posted 57 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 FF and 3 PDs) seems like a great idea...

what has he done wrong other than not getting enough PT? i really hope some other team picks him up and gives him a proper chance.

When McCoy was given a chance to shine, he did so. H

However, he was promptly replaced by perhaps the most overrated OLB in the past couple years, Takeo Spikes. He did nothing with the Bengals and the Bills. He averaged something like 1.5 tackles per game (a la Joey Porter). He's been doing nothing as usual this year on the Eagles (in place of McCoy) from what I've seen.

I don't see McNaab finishing out the year as QB of the Eagles. Sooner or later they're going to go to their new kid. I hope it's sooner than later.

No that aint gonna happen IMO, McNabb has the franchise for at least the rest of this year. And I'm not one to unfairly tout black QBs, but the guy has had a great career in Phili and deserves a chance to play out of his funk.

He has had two good games this year, the rest of his games have been lousy, yes, I agree. However, he is coming back from injury and should get at least this year to see if he can put some good games together. If McNabb looks lousy again next year and afraid to throw the ball down field like he has often looked this year than Kolb should get a shot at around the mid point next year b/c McNabb will have shown to have lost it.

Of course McNabb will probably cry racism again even if Kolb comes in in the middle of next year in a losing season with McNabb stinking it up. But that's the way it is with black athletes, especially black QBs, who feel discriminated against even though they're catered to.Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

McNabb is a starter for life. I don't see how anybody could think otherwise. If McNair is a starter for life, McNabb certainly is.

He might not play for the Eagles, but he will demand to be the starter on whatever team he plays for. My guess is that he will never accept being a backup. He will retire first.

damn, Considine is lost for the remainder of the season...

he was placed on IR with a shoulder injury. what i'm afraid of is that he won't be able to regain his starting job next season, it's Reid's team after all.

Agreed, even this year with all the heat McNabb is taking b/c of the Eagles struggles he still hasn't looked awful. In fact McNabb has had two excellent games. The rest of his games have been lousy, but you have to remember this is considered "his team" he's the face of the franchise and he has taken the Eagles to 3 NFC Championships and one Superbowl.

Even if McNabb leaves the Eagles after next season to make way for Kolb. McNabb is still good enough to command a starting job somewhere. McNabb isn't washed up yet like McNair. McNabb may just be fighting off rust b/c of his bad injury last year, he looks a little tentative to throw the ball down-field to Curtis.

Curtis isn't the biggest target, but he has the speed to get enough separation, so that McNabb should have more confidence to throw to him deep more. McNabb has to start taking more chances b/c Curtis can make big plays. When McNabb had his best game this year it was done by throwing a lot of balls to Curtis downfield!

Stewart Bradley was the talk of the town in Philly yesterday. The Eagles started him in some nickel packages and in place of an injured Omar Gaither. He came up huge in a goal line stand against the Saints, an interception, and a sack. They commented on him making reads and running the defense as a rookie. Could be a sign of good things to come.

Very true. Trust me, anyone who watched the game would know that Bradley's stats were even better than they appeared. He was FLYING around the field all day (especially the goal line stand you mentioned).

Isn't it funny that nearly EVERY white player (especially defense) is a above-and-beyond good player? Like Don Wassal has said many times in the past, this fact isn't merely coincidental.

With Considine, Gocong, Bradley, Curtis, Kolb, Celek, and Runyan, the Eagles might become a fun team to watch next season! If only Matt McCoy wouldnt have been cut in favor of "Te-Krap-o Spikes."

quote from the article about Bradley's great debut:

"It's a lot easier to make plays on the field than it is on the sideline," Bradley said.
