2011 outdoor season

Another breakthrough to report. Just days after Lukas Verzbicas's thrilling four minute mile (only the second runner to do so since the 1960s), England's Charlie Grice ran the metric equivalent. 3:42.86 at the Woodside Grand Prix. I've mentioned Grice before but now he is simply exploding onto...

Apparently, the disappointing times for Bolt and Powell have precipitated a national crisis. Jamaica has just canned its entire dope testing organization. http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20100703/lead/lead7.html

    2011 outdoor season

For sure. Shane wasn't a particularly special college runner. It would be absurd for him to go pro. We follow a lot of mediocre runners at the lower levels. It's fun to cheer for them, but they can't all go to the Olympics. In fact, a lot of the professionals we follow are only professionals...

    2011 outdoor season

This article talks about Jonathan Borlee's training and future plans (possibly switching to the 800). Imagine if the Borlees had to be added to all those young 800 runners--Andrews, Loxsom, Primm, Martin, Greer, Adam Kszczot, Martijn Scheepers, Johann Rogestedt, Austin Mudd, and Wheating. Every...

Adam Gemeli World 100 Meters Junior Champion (10.05)

Agreed--let's hope he stays with the sport. I looked him up, and read several comments on a story about him indicating that he was mostly a footballer who had never trained at track or even joined a track club. Despite that, he is at age 17 running times every bit as fast as Craig Pickering, Jay...

    2011 Top 100m Sprinters

I think Jared C went 10.21 yesterday, if I remember correctly. My only source is his twitter. Can't find the full race results.

    2011 outdoor season

Well, it was tough, running against that gentleman from A and M... The only two runners who clocked faster legs were both 400 national champions, I believe. Beard, the man, er, runner who ran her down is both a 400 champ and a senior. Laura smoked every other runner (and we have splits for all...

    2011 outdoor season

Speaking of 4 by 400's, I've got to give some love to Supergirl, America's sweetheart, the cutie-who-can-scootie, Laura Roesler. She couldn't win it for Oregon's relay, but she nevertheless ran a 51.45 anchor. Now, bear in mind 1) an anchor actually runs more than 400 meters, because of where...

    Lukas Verzbicas

Lukas did it!!!!! A week after breaking the national h.s. record in the two mile, Lukas broke the legendary 4:00 minute barrier in winning the h.s dream mile! I don't believe anyone has accomplished that in more than ten years. He ran 3:59.71 in the cold and rain. Wow. FYI, Second place went...

    800 meters

Thanks. And for anyone, looking for a video, Let's Run has posted a bootleg that someone took by aiming a camera at their monitor. I'm not sure it will be up long, so run, don't walk, to see it. The Let's Run recap refers to this as "one of the most thrilling races in NCAA history." Yep. Just...

    800 meters

Here are the results for that race. Amazing times for Andrews, Greer, and Loxsom. Primm and Martin couldn't keep up, but I think they peaked a little too early this year. Man, we've got some great young 800 runners! <table ="meetresults" align="left" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"...

    800 meters

Wow--I hope some of you guys saw that NCAA race. It totally lived up to the hype (everyone was considering it the marquis event of the NCAAs). Charles Jock, the Sudanese born runner, took it out unbelievably hard, 49 seconds for the first quarter. Only Cas Loxsom stayed with him. Super talents...

    2011 outdoor season

Fearless forecasts for the weekend: 1) I'm feeling optimistic. I think Lukas Verzbicas will go sub-4 and win the most exciting h.s. mile ever contested. Jantzen Oshier will be right there with him. My gut tells me that Austin Mudd won't be able to hang with them, as I think he will end up being...

    2011 outdoor season

Wow. She was totally left in the blocks (reaction time anyone?) but ran them down easily. But, of course, the highlight of the video is when the camera gets closer while she celebrates. Sigh...WL, can't you come up with a nickname for her, like "Lovelyova" or something?

    2011 outdoor season

Byram and Niit through to the finals in the 200. Niit looked great, coasting at the end. Byram had to work quite a bit harder, as he was last out of the turn, but passed six runners to finish second.

    Jamaican Sprinting.

Damnation--does it have to come to this? For the record, let it show that Jamstar was unfailingly polite and positive from the moment he arrived on the boards. It's clear that we don't all agree on the drug issue. Some of us are pretty suspicious of the steroids, when used by jacked-up looking...

    Jamaican Sprinting.

Look, I'm not saying you're wrong to suspect steroids. I mean, watching some of these guys--like Blake the other day, or Powell any day--I can't imagine why they aren't more embarrassed to be seen, looking the way they do (honestly, of all the runners in the world, the ones with the most...

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

Conditions: it was cold, humid, and the track is infamous for being slow: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lalsace.fr%2Fsport%2F2011%2F06%2F08%2F9-96-lemaitre-a-remis-le-turbo-en-marche

On the other hand, though, small populations can produce amazing statistical flukes. I mean, look at the cross country record of Fayetteville-Manlius, or the track record of the school where that girl (Wiessenbach) who just smoked a 2:02 800 came from. Little tiny schools, where none of the...

    2011 outdoor season

I don't know about all the smaller meets--perhaps Guliyev and others are running somewhere this weekend--but there are three major meets coming up in the next few days: 1) Oslo--tis true, all eyes will be on the perfect face and flawless figure of Ivet Lalova. As for the races, Ernst will never...

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

Good run. He was inches away from Blake, and Blake is probably the fourth best in the world right now. Bailey from Antingua was relatively close, but the rest of the field was outclassed. That includes Chambers--totally outclassed. Unfortunately, it also included Cerutti. Someday, I'd like to...

Jantzen Oshier 4:00 in the mile!! Incredible, but our high school thread is the most exciting on the board.

    2011 outdoor season

Also, in California, Jantzen Oshier (I may have misspelled his name but didn't want to look it up again) ran a 4:00 mile. It's incredible the way our young milers are coming around. With Verzbicas, Oshier, and Austin Mudd we may finally see a sub-4 again this year, and the future looks very bright.

    2011 outdoor season

The entire Prefontaine was one massive suckfest. Wheating and Symmonds ran like high schoolers. Rupp and Solinsky didn't run at all. Wariner looked totally mediocre. The only bright spot was Lukas Verzbicas annihilating the h.s. record for the two-mile. Unlike his elders, there's no quit in...

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

I don't see how they can mention Yohan Blake as if he's an afterthought. He's quite probably at the Bolt/Gay/Powell level now, and may already be better than Powell. Look for him to drag Christophe to a great time.
