2025 NFL Wildcard Round

The Steelers last night not only tied the NFL record for most consecutive playoff losses with seven, they set an even more damning "record" -- the first NFL team to lose five straight playoff games by double digit points. It would have been seven straight except for Jacksonville's 3 point win in 2018, which at the time was a big upset win for the Jags. Sayonara Mike Tomlin.

2017: New England 36 Pittsburgh 17
2018: Jax 45 Pittsburgh 42
2021: Cleveland 48 Pittsburgh 37
2022: Kansas City 42 Pittsburgh 21
2024: Buffalo 31 Pittsburgh 17
2025: Baltimore 28 Pittsburgh 14

I wonder if that will ever get mentioned alongside Tomlin’s untouchable “no losing seasons in 19 years” record that gets brought up by members of the national media whenever they discuss the ”Great Mike Tomlin”. i don’t know what perception he holds with the local media and DWFs, but at the national level he‘s revered as if he’s the black Vince Lombardi or such.

He’s leaving the only way possible, on his own accord. I doubt the Rooneys would’ve ever fired him, amazing that such a mid-tier coach seemingly had a lifetime job with the Steelers in an NFL where 2-3 years of mediocrity at most is tolerated before a coach is canned.
 
Not to hijack the thread but I wonder if the Steelers will double down on DEI with their next hire. I still remember back in 2006 when Cowher retired and the candidates were Grimm, Whisenhunt and Tomlin. I was a Steelers fan prior to the Tomlin era but once he was hired my interest pretty much was nil outside of the great Ben Roethlisberger.

Funny how Tomlin stepping down unlocks memories from 19 years ago. Grimm was actually a very good OL coach, he and Whisenhunt ended up in Arizona and Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt's tenure in Arizona was arguably more impressive than what Tomlin did in Pittsburgh considering what a pathetic franchise the Cardinals have been throughout their existence. Besides the Whisenhunt era and the Palmer era with Arians they have been a sad sack franchise.

Tomlin’s success was due to Big Ben, OC Bruce Arians, and DC Dick LeBeau, along with several HOF defensive players already on the team, Antonio Brown and Leveon Bell. Of course you need players and coordinators, but he became very generic after everybody left.

I've been documenting how unpopular Tomlin is in Pittsburgh for years, post #221 in this thread being but the latest example. Hate isn't too strong a word for how most DWFs feel about him. The local media was also against him but in a more circumspect way and it was only this season that they finally began calling for him to be replaced. An exception is Mark Madden who has an afternoon sports talk show in Pittsburgh. He's been mercilessly attacking Tomlin for years, calling him a fraud and a lot of other unflattering names.
