How the Patriots do without Tom Brady may be the most interesting question of the 2008 season. The 2007 Patriots were the most dominating team the NFL has seen in many years, routinely crushing opponents before losing their edge a bit toward the end of the season, just enough to allow a red-hot Giants team to nip them in the Super Bowl thanks to the fourth quarter heroics of Eli Manning and David Tyree.

The Patriots under Bill Belichick have followed a basic demographic formula -- very white (for the NFL) on offense, but par for the course black on defense.

Matt Cassel, a backup since high school, takes over the reins of what was a juggernaut offense in '07. Kevin O'Connell, a 6-5 rookie out of San Diego State, is presently the only other quarterback on the roster with Brady out for the year on injured reserve.

The talents of Wes Welker were utilized to maximum advantage last year and Welker responded with 112 receptions, tied for the league lead, along with 1,175 yards and 8 TDs.

Despite a great career receiving and returning kicks as a walk-on at Texas Tech, Welker went undrafted by the NFL, was signed as a free agent by San Diego and waived, and then signed by the Dolphins, who used him as a backup, one who then-coach Nick Saban seriously considered cutting even though he had been the team's leading receiver. The Patriots happened to notice that Welker was pretty much uncoverable and traded for him, and the rest is history.

Welker's rise to stardom despite the rough road he had to travel is yet more evidence of the large pool of untapped white football talent, at wide receiver and every other position.

Heath Evans remains as the starting fullback, one who also gets the occasional rush, especially near the goal line. Underused and then discarded by Mikey Holmgren in Seattle, Evans has been used a few times as the Patriots' featured runner because of injuries and has always delivered. He could have been a starting power back and done better than many if not all of the pedestrian black runners continuously recycled through the NFL.

The Patriots offensive line in 2007 played as well or better than any line ever has. The amount of time given to Brady to execute the passing game was phenomenal. The line is what keyed the team's effortless scoring, and it would be the same all-white group protecting Cassel in 2008 except that RG Stephen Neal is currently on the PUP list.

Eight year veteran Russ Hochstein out of Nebraska replaces Neal, keeping it an all-white starting unit. Nick Kaczur is the right tackle, Boston College grad Dan Koppen anchors the line at the center position, former first round pick Logan Mankins is the left guard, and Matt Light out of Purdue is the left tackle.

All of the backup linemen except one are also white -- Wesley Britt, Dan Connolly, and Mark LeVoir.

David Thomas out of Texas is now the second tight end after two injury-filled seasons and should see the field a lot and may even surpass Benjamin Watson as the season goes on to become the team's number one receiving threat at the position.

Stephen Spach serves as the third string TE.

On defense, greybeards Mike Vrabel and Teddy Bruschi remain starters at linebacker. Vrabel, a pass rushing demon at Ohio State, thrived immediately upon leaving Bill Cowher's Caste wonderland in Pittsburgh and has been a star in New England playing linebacker, rushing the passer, and even catching the occasional touchdown pass. He is entering his 12th NFL season.

Bruschi, the Italian-Mexican great, has overcome a stroke to play several more seasons at a high level. He is now in his 13th season.

Unfortunately the Patriots are not drafting or developing any young white players on defense. The only other white defensive players once again are backup tackle Mike Wright, in his 4th season out of Cincinnati, LB Larry Izzo, who has been a career White Special Teams Demon, and Ray Ventrone a safety who can play many different positions but who has been released by the Patriots and Jets a half dozen times over the past three seasons.

NUMBER OF WHITE STARTERS: 10 (when using a fullback)

APPROXIMATE NUMBER OF WHITE PLAYERS ON 53 MAN ROSTER: 22 (would have been 23 with Brady)

Great writeup on the Pats, Don!

However, I hope you remembered to include WR/S/CB/ST player Ray Ventrone. He made the team over the super-crappy WR Chad Jackson this season, one of the few pre-season cuts that DIDNT screw a white player. The move literally shocked the hell out of me.

I just went to Ventrone's bio on the Patriots' site and found this. Not real enouraging, very Jerheme Urban/Kevin Kasper like. I wonder which white player has been released the most times without ever playing in a regular season game:

Ray Ventrone was originally signed by the Patriots as an undrafted free agent on April 28, 2005 ... Released by the Patriots (9/3/05) ... Signed to the Patriots practice squad (9/4/05) ... Released from the Patriots practice squad (9/7/05) ... Signed to the Patriots practice squad (9/9/05) ... Signed to the Patriots' active roster (1/30/06) ... Placed on the reserve/injured list (8/30/06) ... Released by the Patriots (2/13/07) ... Signed by the New York Jets (2/21/07) ... Released by the Jets (9/2/07) ... Signed to the Jets practice squad (9/4/07) ... Released from the Jets practice squad (9/12/07) ... Signed to the Patriots practice squad (9/19/07) ... Signed to the Patriots' active roster (11/3/07) ... Released by the Patriots (11/7/07) ... Signed to the Patriots practice squad (11/9/07) ... Signed to the Patriots' active roster (12/22/07).

Wow...Well I guess he's earning enough money to keep trying. Hopefully he'll stick on the roster for years to come this time. 4th WR behind Gaffney maybe eventually.

Pats resigned Kyle Eckel and dropped Stephen Spach.

too bad Pats have washouts Morris and Lamont Jordan this season, otherwise Eckel and Evans would be getting some carries.

Morris and Maroney have looked terrible. They are both overrated for sure, especially Maroney with all his hype. Heath Evans is actually a nimble Lamont Jordan type cut and go runner and is good between the tackles and he's a beast to tackle. I wasn't very impressed though with Kyle Eckel last year. Even if they knew Kyle was running b/c he was the mop up back, he only averaged just over 2 YPC in limited action. Didn't look like anything more than a third string RB to me, but I'm glad he's been resigned.

Don, according to Yahoo and Patriots web sites as of last week, they had black guard Billy Yates starting over Hochstein as Neals replacement. Do we know for sure if Hochstein is starting?

I didn't see enough of the Patriots game to notice if Hochstein started or not. I look at several sources for starters and backups but they are sometimes contradictory. The Patriots in particular were tough to research as their own official site had their roster at about 70 instead of the required 53. I had to check out a number of other sites justto find the 53 man roster.

Hopefully Neal will be back after missing the first six games.

Don, it is amazing all the different football news sources out there. I did like seeing Ventrone listed as sixth wide receiver on the Pats web site.
Concerning the line, article about the game mentioned that Yates did well in game against Jets, so it looks like he is starting, but mentioned he is merely filling in for Neal, so long term we are still looking at an all white line.

back-up quarterback Kevin O'Connell is a very tall, very athletic player who was arguably a better runner than passer in college...

since i really like Cassell and don't see O'Connell getting much p.t. (barring another Patriots injury, of course) am i the only person who thinks he'd make an excellent wide-out? just throwing that out there.

Sammy Morris injured his knee last night, how serious not disclosed yet. Lawrence Maroney was placed on IR and Lamont Jordan is also injured. They still have third down back Kevin Faulk, but the Patriots are getting close to the dreaded "Emergency Running Back" situation when they have to reach deep, so deep they may have to use a white man.Keep limber, Heath Evans.

I'm sure there are some running backs sitting at home the Patriots can call to come in and take over. Isn't Shaun Alexander still available? Edited by: White Shogun

No Alexander is on the skins. DOn dont forgget undrafted free agent rookie Ben Jarvis Green. Sure the media would love for him to get some carries.

With Cassel lacking Brady's pocket presence, you'd think Evans will run the ball more. Look for David Thomas to catch more passes in the endzone too!

i've been hoping Evans would get more touches, as well. surely the Pats are getting close to that "emergency situation" where a white man can tote the rock.

New England signed QB Andrew Walter, who was released by Oakland. Walter never had a fair chance with the Raiders, struggling behind one of the worst o-lines ever when starting some games as a rookie in '06 for an absolutelywretched team. Of course he was immediately branded a "bust" by the media and DWFs.
I liked watching him play at Arizona State. He's reminiscent of Tom Brady -- tall and with a big arm. The question is if he has anywhere near Brady's great pocket presence. But on a team like the Patriots, that knows how to protect the quarterback, Walter could thrive.

I like this acquisition for the Patriots and agree that Walter was fun to watch while at Arizona and displayed a very good arm.

The best player on the Pat's defense is willing to accept a 2nd team role this year.
smiley11.gif
Even though he is an older guy, you don't see guys like Ray Lewis, James Farrior, or Derrick Brooks doing that to make room for the young guys on the team. Even though Brooks did get released, he would never have reliquished his position to a young guy.

From Rotoworld:
Patriots LB Tedy Bruschi says he's willing to accept a non-starting role this season.

Bruschi played with the second team against the Bengals last week, with Gary Guyton starting inside next to Jerod Mayo. It's a good move for the Pats defense as Bruschi has lost more than a step over the past few seasons.

This will leave the Patriots without one white starter on defense. Quite a difference from a few years ago when they at least had a couple of whites starting on defense.

Al Michaels mentioned tonight the Bruschi will announce retirement tommorow.

From Rotoworld:
Al Michaels mentioned on NBC's Sunday Night Football broadcast that Patriots LB Tedy Bruschi plans to retire.

We'll wait for the Patriots or a Boston reporter to confirm this, but it isn't surprising. The 36-year-old career Pat has declined sharply over the last two seasons and recently lost his starting job to second-year former undrafted free agent Gary Guyton. Bruschi was scheduled to earn $1.9 million in 2009. If he hangs 'em up, the Patriots will be off the hook for that money.

Horrible to think of the changes in their defense over the last few seasons. Sad!

The Patriots still have Mike Wright, who plays a fair amount on the d-line. Also, Ventrone is a safety, but has been cut by New England seemingly a dozen times already.

Maybe it's just been the teams I've been watching in the preseason, but it looks like defenses are going to be blacker than ever this year. More teams seem to be down tovery fewwhite backups to go with their all-black starting units.

Black teams have been getting blacker (ex:the entire NFC East), "white" teams have been getting whiter (ex:packers, Colts, texans now?)
