Since 2005, Maryland has started 4, 5, 5, 4, 4, 10, 8, 9, 8, 6, 7, 3, 4, 5, 3, 1, 1, 0, 2, and 1 white players (excluding 2015 where there was no write-up). In 2026, they are projected to start 1 yet again.

Maryland is always a notoriously short write-up. Black head coach Mike Locksley enters his 8th season with the program and is trying to improve on consecutive 4-8 overall, 1-8 conference record seasons. This would have been enough to fire him most years, but in the advent of NIL budgeting, the athletic department decided they’d be better off spending Locksley’s potential buyout money elsewhere.

I've posited in the past the the apparel sponsorship deal with Under Armour is in part responsible for such roster compositions, ie UA running high school camps in DMV ghettos and incentivizing a pipeline. However, a more simple explanation is that this is just a program with a deeply-embedded preference for blacks.

Center Michael Hershey will start for the third season. He’s a possible Day 3 pick. Credit to @Freethinker for the pithy observation that the lone whitey on this chocolate team is named Hershey.

Kent State transfer QB Devin Kargman will spend his final season of eligibility backing up a black scrambling phenom teenager.

Starters:
C: Michael Hershey

Backups:
QB: Devin Kargman
OL: Trevor Szymanski, Logan Bennett
TE: AJ Szymanski

Hahaha, thanks for the shoutout.

Maryland and Locksley really screw talented in-state White athletes up the ol’ Hershey highway. This program is light years away from the days of Boomer Esiason….
