John Standeford

There has been a John Standeford sighting. He caught 2 passes in the Bengals preseason opener. I could have sworn he had bit out of football for 3 or 4 years. The last I heard of him he was on the Colts practice squad a while back. I wonder what this does for Ryan Whalens chances of making the 53 man roster?

John Standeford! He was royally screwed years ago, good to see they brought him back to screw him again. Those crappy "Big Ten all-time leading yardage receivers" just don't know when to quit. Must be a high motor guy. He fits the Wes Welker prototype, short (6'5") and white.

 It would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad.

After going undrafted out of Purdue (who didn’t see that coming?) and being efficiently Jewed-around (waived, cut, released, practice squad, etc) by the Redskins and Colts for 4 full seasons, Standeford was signed to Detroit’s active roster in 2008. He received some decent playing time opposite of Calvin Johnson (Jon Kitna was the QB) and recorded a series of lengthy receptions. I remember watching some Lions highlights on ESPN and thinking: “Yes, he’s finally found a home!” But alas, when the affirmative (bl)action scrubs returned from injury…he was immediately released.

After missing the 2009 and 2010 season, he signed a UFL contract in 2011. After he’s unceremoniously cut by the Bengals (which, barring a miracle, he will be), he’ll likely play for UFL this year. Ironically, Standeford is wearing OchoHomo’s old #85 jersey.

Has any player been kicked around the league more than Standeford?
Bengals released WR John Standeford.

Standeford is not an NFL-caliber talent. He'll need a rash of injuries to latch on somewhere as a special teamer and deep reserve at receiver. The Bengals also waived WR Landon Cox, WR Bart Johnson, RB Jonathan Williams and T Andrew Gardner.

Sad news, wa33. John is definitely one of the worst cases I know of.
