I have to admire Bo Jackson. All he does nowdays is hunt and fish. I guess all of that endorsement money is being put to good use.

Don-

I agree with you about Bo Jackson. He was a pathfinder in regards to
being referred to always by his first name only by the media. This has
become common practice with especially overhyped black athletes (but
never white ones); for instance, "Magic," "Michael," "Deion," "Tiger,"
"Lebron," "Mello," "Kobe," "Shaq," etc. You are exactly right about
those two plays of his being overplayed and talked about endlessly by
the media. A short TD run and a home run in the All-Star game. Wow-
that does make him the greatest athlete of all time! Danny Ainge
played two pro sports (baseball and basketball) just slightly before
Jackson. Ever remember any hype about him being a great athlete?
Remember any commercials devoted to worshiping him and wildly
exaggerting his abilities and accomplishments? Jackson was never
accused of criminal behavior, but he wasn't the friendliest guy in the
world, and like Don, I have a hard time liking these media creations
(like Tiger Woods), who are so overhyped and overrated by the
jock-sniffing press.

How about Bo Jackson?

In 1993 I was at a game at Baltimore's Camden Yards when Bo's Chisox were visiting. Bo came up with the bases loaded. I was rooting for the O's but expected him to hit a grand slam. As I recall he hit a single for 1 or 2 runs, I forget which.

I liked the Nike ad where Bo wore shoulder pads while brandishing a bat. I imagine now he's happy to be out of the limelight. That Jackson snubbed the Buccaneers who drafted him out of Auburn for a baseball career (before joining the Raiders) was symptomatic of Tampa Bay's years of bad and worse luck that finally ended with a Super Bowl win 2 years ago.

Should have read the rest of the thread before posting about Bo Jackson. I guess I too was a victim of all the hype.

Gary, I agree with you 100%.Whites tend to be magnanimous by nature and altruistic to a fault. Never, in all my years as a sports fan, have I readabout or listened to blacks discussing their FAVORITE white players. But, in keeping with the spirit of this topic, I will advance the name of Darren Sharper. I still chuckle at the sight of him trying to bring down Ed McCaffrey in the most pitiful tackling demonstration ever displayed on Monday Night Football.

I guess I may have typed before I really thought about Bo, even though I did like to watch him, but those other guys truly are my favorite black NFL players.

Gary and Bart you have a point, but I see this thread as a lighthearted offspring of the dialogue with Black Guy. I don't think any of us are going soft or altruistic. I know I'm not!

Same here Don. Just a reflection on the past, notice how most of mine are older players. I can't name hardly any current black players I really like, based on their personality.

Well then Don, I'll have to go way back in time and nominate Ernie Banks. ' Hey, lets play two today! '

Col. He was a baseball player with the Chicago Cubs. Yes, I know this is about football but what the heck, I couldn't think of anyone.

It's a shame that young black kids aren't taught by their community and the white power structure to emulate Ernie Banks rather than Terrell Owens. Banks would probably be dismissed as an "Uncle Tom" today for his pleasant demeanor and respect for white people.

Thanks for the info Bart. Your probably right Don. It is a shame that respect for others is a thing of the past.

We used to trade baseball cards, I remember giving up my Ernie Banks, Henry Aaron, Joe Ad******* and Warren Spahn cards plusseveral others for an autographed Eddie Mathews, which was not easy to come by. I wasted all my money on bubble gum looking for that elusive card. A school buddy told me he chased Mathews down after a game and crashed into him sliding on his horse shoe cleats. He said Eddieswore at himbut signed his card anyway. Of course I had to have that stupid card! After showing my trophy to some kids at school, one of them looked atit and read the name, spelling it out E DD I E M A T TH E WS, then he started laughing. He said, ' Doesn't he spell his name with only one T? I can still feel the pain as I write this.

Campbell(the Tyler Rose) and Sayers two great running backs. That Monday Night game Campbell had against Miami going for 190 something was great.

For your information I have worn jerseys of white players before. My favorite team of all time is the 80's Celtics teams and my favorite player is Larry Bird. I never really liked the Lakers much even until this day.

(Alleged) Black Guy, you may be black , brown, yellow, red or a 15 year old white kid who is having a good time. I have no way of knowing or verifying what you say, so I take everything with a grain of salt.If you like or hate Larry Bird, it matters little to me because you are entitled to your opinion, I derive no satisfaction either way.If you start telling us you love George Jones and play bag pipes in your spare time, the red flags will definitely come up.

I'm glad somebody likes Larry Bird, because I sure don't. He may have
been a great basketball player but the comment he made about being
OFFENDED when the opposing coach put a white player on him to play
defense ruined any sympathetic feelings I may have ever had for him.
Guess he thinks he is one of the exceptions to the rule that
white guys can't play ball.

And what the hell does Larry Bird have to do with Black football players??

Jaxvid, how did Randall Cunningham make your short list over Mike Vick?
