WTF? Bud Selig at it again

On Yahoo! MLB, writer Gordon Edes in "Can Big Papi end his power outage," has this puke-worthy piece of nonsense neatly tucked away at the end of the article:

"Those close to the scene in Houston say that just because the Astros picked up Cecil Cooper's contract extension through the 2010 season does not protect him from an early dismissal if the Astros are out of contention at the All-Star break. The same source said commissioner Bud Selig made a call on Cooper's behalf to Houston owner Drayton McLane, who was on the fence about picking up Cooper's option."

The Astros have been awful under Cecil Cooper, but let's keep him around simply because he's black. There is no other way to read this.

, the man who should be on trial in criminal court somewhere for turning a blind eye to baseball's PED problem, while playing the part of the owners' stooge so he could collect millions from them in salary to keep his team in Milwaukee, is a pathetic piece of racist garbage.

What kind of uproar would we hear if Roger Goodell called a particular NFL team-oh, say, the Steelers-and said that their team's roster is not an accurate reflection of the talent pool found in the U.S. along ethnic lines, and instruct them to keep more deserving white men on the 53-man roster next season?

Or if David Stern ordered NBA teams to drastically reduce the number of blacks on their rosters to get the number somewhere around 12-15%, to honor a commitment to equal opportunity?

I guess the main reason I'm so fired up right now is not simply the content of Edes's reporting. It is the fact that it could be written so nonchalantly, as if it goes without saying that MLB needs to make sure more blacks get jobs as players and managers in the game, even if they suck at their jobs like Cecil Cooper, due to the fact that there just aren't enough of them these days.

It's not as bad as it seems. Cooper played for the Brewers for 11 seasons while Selig was the owner. Cooper batted over .300 during 7 of those seasons and Selig was probably just helping him out with a phone call. I could be wrong but it would be awfully tough to prove 'affirmative action' here.

You may think Bud Selig simply made a courtesy call to try to sway Astros' owner Drayton McLane in Cooper's favor. This way of thinking seems rather naive to me, though.

Cooper is the first American black manager of the Astros. By twisting McLane's arm to pick up Cooper's contract option, Selig is not only trying to help out Cooper's bank account. He is also trying to keep a black as manager of the team for as long as possible.

Van Slyke, if I thought you had inside knowledge about the Cooper situation I would agree with you 100%. But you don't. So stop talking like you do.

I agree that Selig has his agenda when it comes to minorities in baseball, but I prefer to take each situation as it comes and not cry racism at every turn. The people who do that lose all credibility.

I'm not one to "cry racism at every turn," and this is why I don't take part in a lot of discussions on CF.

You think Bud helped out his buddy Cecil Cooper simply because he was a good player in years past for the Brewers. I interpret Bud's motives quite differently, and there is ample evidence to support my opinions.
