Fight is off.  Wlad hurt his back.

No, he injured an abdominal muscle.

from Dan Rafael

Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko suffered a torn abdominal muscle on Wednesday, forcing him withdraw from his title defense against England's Dereck Chisora four days before the fight.

Klitschko was due to make his 10th title defense against the little-known Chisora at the SAP Arena in Mannheim, Germany, on Saturday -- a fight due to be carried by ESPN in the United States.

However, during his final workout hitting the pads with trainer Emanuel Steward, Klitschko suffered the injury, manager Bernd Boente told ESPN.com.

"He was hitting the mitts and it just happened," Boente said. "The fight is canceled. The pain is extreme. He couldn't even sit in the car on the way to the hospital." Klitschko (55-3, 49 KOs) had gone through a public workout earlier in the day, although they are light and just for show. However, Boente said a couple of hours later, he was working with Steward for real when he felt a sudden pain.

Boente said Klitschko, 34, underwent a CT scan and was diagnosed with a 2-inch tear on the left side of his abdominal muscle near the bottom of his rib cage.

"The doctor said he needs four to six weeks to heal," Boente said. "Wladimir has never had to cancel a fight before. He is totally upset. He had a great training camp in the Austrian mountains. He was in fantastic shape and he's very, very upset and very sad. And not only for him but for all the people who bought tickets to the sold-out arena. We were all looking forward to the fight. We are sorry for the fans and for our TV partners. What can you do?"

"The abdominal muscle is injured and therefore Wladimir Klitschko will not be able to fight on Saturday," Dr. Sven Roessing, an orthopedic specialist at University Hospital in Mannheim, said in a statement released by Klitschko's K2 Promotions.

Boente said the entire card, which also was to feature cruiserweight contender Ola Afolabi and middleweight contender Andy Lee, has been called off.

Boente said he was not sure if the fight with Chisora (14-0, 9 KOs) would be rescheduled. "We don't know. This just happened," Boente said. "We have to check all the options."

It's better that he got this today rather than on the day of the fight. I suspect he had tightness but decided to massage and exercise his way through the abdominal strain. If he had quit on his stool or been tko'd because of the excruciating pain, the US media would have had a field day at his expense. Plus I have heard enough Cinderella stories for a lifetime....

Screw the thug Chisora anyway. I don't know if they plan to reschedule, but now he has enough time to get in trouble again anyway. His type doesn't handle free time well.Edited by: The Hock

Sounds like a phoney injury, if he can be so disabled in a workout he should skip the actual fight. I think the gate or the take was lagging so they cancelled it as it was not worth the effort. Just like an airline that suddenly finds a mechanical failure on a flight that is underbooked.

That's hardly the way the Klitschko brothers do business.  Besides, unlike David Gaye's alleged back injury, Wlad has doctors and hospital reports.  And, by the way, that's generally the way I've always injured myself,  while training, not while fighting.

The Klitschko brothers are the most honest fighters in the entire boxing game. That's a fact. They would never fake injuries and certainly not when they have a fight lined up with a bum like Chisora. Chisora would be a pushover, more so than Briggs.

Yeah, why would Wlad give up an easy 10 millions dollars to pulverize another in a long string of affelets. The majority of the money was guaranteed. Come on. Sometimes I think some members believe the caste conspiracy has infected our Athletes to be dishonest as well. Not buying it.

Briggs was an incomparably better fighter than Chisora.

All 15,000 seats in the arena were sold out several weeks ago.

The injury is real.

Wlad is not getting any younger, he'll be 35 in March. He's had a lot of pro and amateur fights since his teenage years. I think the wear and tear of the intense conditioning in preparing for so many fights is beginning to take it's toll. Edited by: Parody

I like the Klit's as much as anybody here but boxing is a dirty business. Don't think just because they are "our" guys that things don't happen. That's naive. But drink the kool-aid if you want, I don't care.

Ok, let me get this. Wlad can make an easy at the very least a cool 10 million dollars while busting out another scrub black hope. The money from the Network and gate, combined is guaranteed if the fight takes place. But since one speculates that all the gate seats are not soldout, Wlad fakes an injury? Not plausible.

There is a difference between high risk and a easy cash out. This fight was an easy cash out. I believe Wlad's injury is real. By the way, I don't like any flavor of Kool Aid, especially the grape kind, and never said Wlad was a Pope or Catholic. Just looking at it from a common "cents" point of view. But just my opinion.

Guys, what exactly are we talking about here? Derek Chisora is a bum. Wladmir totally dominated Eddie Chambers who is a much better fighter than Chisora. Who has Chisora beaten? A fat and old Danny Williams?

Jesus, the guy got injured.  He's human. Humans sometimes get injured.  Now his pals here are going on about how he's old and a liar and a cheater and all.  He's never looked better, and as soon as his injury heals he'll be back again and better than ever.  Furthermore, as opposed to David Gaye's alleged back injury, presumably Wlad has medical and hospital records (hopefully they haven't been disappeared as the were the hospital records after his poisoning in the Brewster fight).  Just yesterday I was going on about how come I get athletic injuries all the time and the Klitschkos are so amazing they hardly ever get hurt.  Maybe I spooked him.

I think Waldimir really wants Haye, but more than that he wants Daveyboy's WBA title,
i've called a friendwho isa trainer, and he said he's been hearing rumors that Haye wants a march
fight with Wald, so if Waldimir fights Chisora his next match must be his mandatory and not Haye..

Yes, but I don't see Haye ever fighting either Klitschko brother. He already pulled his little shame twice and I believe he will do it a third time. Haye knows he will lose the fight and then he's basically done at heavyweight.
