Wladimir Klitschko vs. Derek Chisora is now a done deal for Dec 11:

Wladimir Klitschko ready for fight

by Dan Rafael

It's been tough for heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko to find opponents of late, but at least one fighter is willing to step into the ring with him. England's Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KOs) signed on for a fight on Monday, according to Bernd Boente, Klitschko's manager.

"I think it's an interesting fight because a guy who is unbeaten is always an interesting opponent," Boente told ESPN.com. "He has a very good record and Wladimir and [trainer] Emanuel [Steward] watched some of Chisora's fights on YouTube and they said he's fast and can punch. They were impressed. They said he can definitely punch, has good hand speed and is mobile, and that always [makes for] a dangerous opponent."

Though Klitschko will be the heavy favorite -- as he usually is -- in the Dec. 11 fight in Mannheim, Germany at the SAP Arena, he said he would not look past Chisora, a 26-year-old native of Zimbabwe now living in England.

"I know that Dereck Chisora is a very dangerous opponent," Klitschko said. "He's young, he's fast and he's a very hard puncher. My coach, Emanuel Steward, has warned me about Chisora's quality and reminded me about the great Muhammad Ali, who lost his championship in 1978 to Leon Spinks in his eighth professional fight. I won't underestimate Chisora. I will prepare myself as intensely as I always do and try to give Chisora no chance."

Despite thin professional experience, Chisora, the British and Commonwealth champion, has recorded his most notable wins in his past two fights. He knocked out Sam Sexton in the ninth round of their rematch on Sept. 18 and in March scored a second-round knockout of Danny Williams, who owns a knockout win against Mike Tyson but was stopped by Vitali Klitschko in a 2004 title bout.

"I knew that my victory over Sam Sexton would be a big step in the world rankings, but this chance is unbelievable," Chisora said. "Everybody thinks my chances against Klitschko are as good as a snowball's chance in hell, but I don't care. I have fought my whole life and I am ready for a battle. This will be my night and by the end of this year the whole world will know the name Dereck Chisora."

After a shoulder injury limited Klitschko (55-3, 49 KOs) to just one fight in 2009, he will be fighting for the third time this year when he makes the 10th defense of what has been a dominant title reign. Already this year he has knocked out Eddie Chambers in the 12th round in March and knocked out Samuel Peter in the 10th round of their rematch on Sept. 11.

Other opponents considered for the fight were Alexander Dimitrenko, David Tua and former cruiserweight champ-turned heavyweight Jean Marc Mormeck, Boente said.

Klitschko said he was happy to return to the SAP Arena, where he knocked out Chris Byrd and made title defenses against former champ Hasim Rahman and Ray Austin.

"The atmosphere at all my fights in Mannheim is great," Klitschko, 34, said. "I will always link the SAP Arena with winning my second world championship there against Chris Byrd. It is one of the highlights of my career."

The deal for Klitschko's fight with Chisora comes just five days before brother Vitali Klitschko defends his version of the heavyweight title against former champion Shannon Briggs on Saturday (ESPN3.com, 5 p.m. ET) in Hamburg, Germany.

The deal Monday ends a long search for Klitschko's next opponent. He has already mowed down most of the top fighters in the division other than his brother, fellow champion Vitali Klitschko, whom he says he will never fight.

Two top opponents have avoided Klitschko -- titleholder David Haye and Alexander Povetkin. Haye has called him out for the past couple of years, but refused to fight him, even pulling out after signing a contract for a June 2009 bout. Povetkin, a mandatory challenger for two years, was supposed to meet Klitschko on Sept. 11, but gave up the title shot and a career-high $2 million-plus purse after trainer Teddy Atlas said he needed more seasoning.

Two other top contenders, Nikolai Valuev and Tomasz Adamek, are not available. Valuev, a former titlist, is on the shelf after arm surgery. Adamek has another fight scheduled.

I'll say one thing for Chisora, he's no coward like David Haye.

Another bum o' the month as they used to say of Joe Louis opponents.

Compare the won-lost records of the fighters Louis fought with the fighters Wlad fights, many of whom are previously undefeated, whereas most of Louis' opponents had many previous losses, and he never as a champ once fought anyone who was previously undefeated until he met Marciano and got KO'd.  Then look at the size and strength of the fighters they fought.  Many of Louis' adversaries were only in the 180's, or even the 170's, likewise the endlessly media-hyped Cassius Clay alias M. Ali.

You can do the same thing with any of the past champions, Ali maybe beat one unbeaten fighter,

I think Ali ONLY fought 2 undefeated opponents...

George Foreman (WON), and Larry Holmes (LOST)...

It's also notable that Ali fought a number of bums like Wepner, and Dunn. In his fight against Dunn, Ali absorbed a number of punishing shots from a very game, but weak chinned Dunn. Ali only fought about 3 opponents who were bigger than him...

Foreman, Bugner, and Holmes.

The Klitschko brothers have faced a number of opponents the sizes of the 3 mentioned. And contrary to what most will say, these Klitschko opponents are more than competent challengers. It's just that the Klitschko are so good, they make them look like amateurs. TODAY'S HW division is not watered-down, most notable HW's today are in EUROPE, deliberately ignored by the Jewish-controlled boxing media. America has forged it's own IRON CURTAIN against the European HW's.

Yes, but the media wants us to believe that there were many superior fighters in the heavyweight division back then and that's why fighters picked up many losses. Guess what? It works because the DWF's buy it hook, line and sinker.

I'm not even exaggerating when I tell you this but one time a black guy told me the Klitschko's are really black guys that just "look" white.

In a biography of Louis, I found out the reason behind the bum of the month club. His manager was afraid that the US was going to get into
WW 2 really soon, so that he scheduled as many fights as possible against whoever was available for Joe to cash in as quickly and as often as possible before we got into the war. This was in 1940, and as it happened we didn't get into the war at this time, so I believe his pace slowed in 1941, with his one big fight against Billy Conn.

I remember reading a book by Henry Cooper [a poor heavyweight in the 60s], he had helped train Dunn,
and he called Dunn the worst fighter he ever worked with,

Another thing about Louis. He was champ during WWII. Most of his serious competition was in somebodies military. The only opponents available were either too old to be drafted or physically or mentally deferred.

Louis himself went into the military. Jimmy Bivins held the wartime belt. Your right about who was available to fight for the belt. Only 4f or men above 40?? could have avoided the draft. A classic case of this is in another sport was Pete Gray who was a minor league player who had one arm and made the majors when the majority of the players were drafted or volunteered in the war effort.

The NBA argument shows that it's all about race! it's not about the Klitschkos
being Ukrainian, or not being Amercians, or they talk funny, it's about white! the media say the best amercian fighters have went into the NFL and NBA, but they never say the NHL.....

Chisora is going to get his axe whooped just like Briggs did. He's a windbag and little else.

I have rarely seen a writer mention MLB or the NHL. Just by noting that the NBA could produce boxers is stating an agenda. Most NBA players are much too willowy to be heavyweight boxers. I do recall a New Jersey writer who was lamenting about the lack of boxing talent mentioning that Scott Stevens could have been a good fighter though...

I just hope for another Klitschko win. I want them to have all the belts before they retire, especially the one wuss-puss David Haye is clinging to.

I'll say it now for the record. I've been watching multiple Wladimir fights and he moves like a light heavy. I haven't seen a heavyweight yet that can match his handspeed. Vitali clearly doesn't have it anymore, and should retire.

A few years back i remember an old time trainer who seen Waldimir sparring, and he said Wald was as fast as Muhammad Ali,
and this is a man 40lb bigger than Ali...

Not only that, I remember veteran black trainer Tommy Brooks saying Wladimir was faster than Tyson & Holyfield.

Wladimir is incredibly fast. Vitali is a shell of his former self. He looks a lot slower than when he fought Lewis. He's still very dominant and no one will give him problems but he doesn't have to much time left. In his position I would fight maybe 2 or 3 more times. After that, call it quits.

Wladimir Klitschko is looking for possible replacements for Derek Chisora pending the outcome of his November 10 court date for assault charges which could land him six months in prison.

Chisora was involved in criminal activity. That's not surprising. I doubt Chisora will get anything more than probation but hopefully a talented Eastern Euro heavyweight gets a title shot if Chisora is not available.

Even non-Klitschko fans gotta understand it's NOT his fault on this one. Chisora really blew this one, his one shot at boxing glory. I'd really like to see Denis Boytsov come forward on this one.
