Why don’t blacks dominate MMA?

Most everyone gravitated to economic reasons. The two most popular excuses being that MMA is too expensive and there isn't any money to be made in it.

First of all it is not as expensive as people think. Didn't Evan Tanner teach himself grappling from watching videos?

I think it was the thread starter who said that blacks "pretty much dominate every other sport out there." Uh, no...only football (American) and basketball (remember the Olympics?)

Furthermore, if blacks are such amazing natural athletes wouldn't that mean that they would need a minimal amount of training?

Sorry, Savage, I'm not a member either. I get tempted to sign up just to rebut this stupid crap, too, but I think it would be a waste of time anyway. I'd have to compile statistics on the median income of blacks, etc, and I don't have the time right now.
 
Chuck Liddell has proven that you can become very wealthy if you reach the elite level, are popular, and get endorsements. We all know that black athletes have no problem becoming popular and getting endorsements.

As for how expensive it is to train in MMA, I have no idea. But some of those guys on TUF didn't seem very affluent. And there are plenty of blacks in boxing, kickboxing, and wrestling. Why would MMA be any more expensive than kickboxing?

It's a pretty sad commentary on blacks if they need taxpayer funding in order to excel at a sport. For God's sake, how about a little self-reliance??? Edited by: JD074

suited for real fighting? Oh wait, that doesn't fit the script.

I wouldn't doubt that with the Murray Rothstein crowd getting involved
(Spike) we'll see pressure to have many more black fighters, 'winning'
black fighters.

Seriously though, although the sport is suited for lower class, urban and impoverished but pugnacious people, it targets a middle and upper middle class audience that is educated, ambitious, and industrious to a point. Although a few blacks could become successful in it, it shall mostly attract a white audience and hence, white newcomers.

I know a couple blacks that watch the UFC and practice a martial art, but they are not typical and fit the UFCs target mold and only one is a good athlete.

Hard to believe that an accountant and a math teacher are two of the baddest men on the planet huh?

Its a myth that blacks all live in poverty. There are more middle class blacks than poor.

I have concluded that blacks do not dominate mixed martial arts because no one has figured out a way to install some sort of caste system affirmative action into the sport yet. Once you are in the ring or octagon, it is just you and another man. No team mates to take the fall, no one to blame, just you and your training, skill, and most of all determination and ability to think under pressure.

Boxing is different in that whites have been driven out of most areas where boxing gyms thrive: Urban ghettos. It takes a special kind of white kid to put up with that type of environment to learn how to box. Mixed martial arts gyms, on the other hand, can be found in all parts of the country. Small towns with some type of jiu jitsu school abound all across the country now. And I don't see white men, especially those who train and participate in this sport, giving up this niche to rowdy black thugs who think they're tough.
 
I believe that to become proficient in several different styles of combat a person has to have a certain level of intelligence. An example would be, Kevin Randleman, who has great wrestling talent but does'nt seem to have the IQ necessary to learn the striking and submission aspect of the sport and additionally to tie all of these skills together. Randleman was a participant in some of the early UFC's but does'nt seem to have learned anything over the years and has several notable losses due to that fact, one coming from a much smaller Kazushi Sakuraba. Now compare Randleman to Mirko Cro-Cop, who was a world class striker but was clueless on submissions. After his first loss Cro-Cop decided to improve his fighting style by not just learning submissions but concentrating on his takedown defense while he studied grappling. In the process Cro-Cop has become very difficult to take down and as a result he has remained a top heavyweight contender in the PRIDE organization. Jeremy Horn is another example. It's been reported that Horn is not very strong nor fast for his size but learns quickly and has great endurance. Part of that endurance is from knowing base and positioning. Most people who have trained very long can give you axamples of an older grappler / striker who lets the young guy exhaust himself with an ineffective offense until he finds an opening and makes the younster pay for it. So Horn was intelligent enough to improve upon his strengths so as to make up for his shortcomings in other areas. I know people rag on about the superiority of blacks in athletics, but in my opinion the most important aspect of all is intelligence, and caucasians have always outperformed negroes in IQ. I will take a average athlete with a high IQ any day over a low IQ gifted one. Just my 2 cents worth.Edited by: dkr77
 
Horn's incredible number of victories is only tarnished by the fact that he seems to lose when he fights top-tier guys, esp when he tries to fight at 205. He looks like he's never done any weight training at all, and could probably fight at 170 lbs if he was willing to cut the weight. However, he quite possibly may have beaten more Black fighters (and White ones) than any other fighter in MMA, including submitting David Louisseau, Gilbert Yvel, and Vernon White before Chuck K.Oed him. The only Black fighter he has ever lost to was Anderson Silva.

I've said before, you see alot more Black fighters trying their hand at the smaller shows than ever trickle into PRIDE or UFC...guys like Horn are the ones who beating them there before they reach more widely viewed promotions, which ironically gives rise to the idea that no Blacks are attempting to compete with Whites in MMA. For this one must appreciate Horn, even if his training habits and ability against top-tier fighters leave something to be desired.Edited by: White_Savage
 
Savage, I'll agree with part of your statement. Remember though, some of those decisions were questionable-and I must admit I HAVE NOT viewed all of his loses. However, when he fought Noguiera, who is a top ten heavyweight, I thought Horn should have won the decision. I have also heard he was suffering from an injury in his fight with Silva. Not making excuses, but for a man that should only be fighting at 185 Jeremy Horn is an excellent fighter. And if I remember correctly he has only been stopped once and that was by Liddell who is a very big 205.

If blacks don't dominate mixed martial arts right now, they will soon. They'll do it the same way they run boxing - paying off the judges.

Kimbo "The Orangutan" Slice's career is practically over. Sean Gannon fed him his lunch several times in that one fight, which I'm sure everyone on this site has seen by now. Gannon pummelled him towards the end three different times, until Kimbo eventually couldn't get up. As far as I'm concerned, it's a wrap for gorilla man.
