Why do colleges inflate the height of players??

This actually bothers me. World Wrestling Entertainment does the same thing, and because colleges do it, the game is cheapened in my view.

Why inflate the height of their players when they will get "exposed" as 2-3 inches shorter at the NFL combine and such?

Remember when Mario Williams was 6-7? He's listed as 6-5 now. What happened? I know NFL rosters don't add 1/4 (of an inch) or 1/2 after the 6-5, but 6-5 and 3/4 would still not be the frivolous 6-7 that all the jock-sniffers wrote in their NFL draft articles.


There are several (collegiate) White linemen that are legit 6-5 and 6-6 (which is tall anyhow), so I think it's stupid to list them at 6-7 or 6-8 if they aren't THAT tall. I know that a lot of my favorite linemen and TE's are going to measure in at a respectable 6-4+ at the combine and that's great.

Look at one college basketball player -- Cole Aldrich. I believe he's a very legit 6-11 which is what he's listed at. He's a physical monster that towers over most of the bigs in college basketball. If he stood next to Pau Gasol and Marcin Gortat, there would be very little difference in height. Cole is a very big man, and he has some good thickness in his arms and shoulders.

I'm mainly bothered by White insecurity. If the affletes want to act like they are all 20 feet tall, they can go for it... but then they'll have to explain how they got BEAT by a team of White midgets.

the coaching staffs lie to make their players sound better than they are. it's not just with height, either. with football, the 40 times are waaaaaay inflated, as well. or should i say deflated?

that's why a team like Arkansas signs a dozen affletes every year who "run" sub-4.4 40s, but have those times magically balloon into 4.6's-4.7's at the NFL Combine.

furthermore, the drunken White masses are too stupid to notice or remember it after the fact, so the situation continues in perpetuity with no accountability for the blatant lies.

the "interesting" bit is that only White players seem to suffer from the practice even though their numbers are rarely artificially enhanced. for example, when Tyler Hansbrough actually measured at 6-9 at the pre-draft combine for the NBA, the scouts were "shocked."

Well ones that aren't tested at the NFL combine still seem to have inflated speed numbers, probably height too. Jason David a cornerback who that was just released from the Saints, was listed at 5'8. No way this guy is 5'8. When they released him, they showed him getting burnt by wide receivers. Steve Smith was one of those receivers who did attend the combine, and is 5'9, Smith looked to have at least 3 inches on David. I know you cant accurately judge it from tv but you would think someone only an inch different from somebody else would not look so short next to the other person. The only difference is Steve Smith attneded the combine and I am pretty sure Jason David did not

It's interesting that you mention Hansbrough. When he was standing next to 6-10, Ed Davis, on the court last season there was very little difference in height.

I figured then, that if Hansbrough was shorter than 6-9, that would mean that Davis wasn't exactly 6-10. It's "funny" because some of the ESPN folks were saying that Tyler was probably going to measure in at 6-7! They must not have watched UNC last season because there was only about an inch difference between Tyler and Ed Davis, height-wise, when they stood next to each other.

Like you said, the scouts were "shocked" that Tyler is really 6-9!
