White Devils: The Unbearable Whiteness of Duke Ba

"Far more significant was the color, so to speak, that Duke Hate took on in the '90s: Duke was likened to an evil, soulless corporation, with ruthless Coach K at helm; the Truth About Duke website would feature a still shot of Duke fans that makes it look like they're giving a Fascist salute. And there's been even more creative variations on this theme -- "Coach KKK," for instance. -- Richard Spencer

Great article. This needs to go on the Caste Home Page. 11 out of 14 whites on the team and they are in the final four. I love it. How is that for stereotypes?

Nice article, thanks for posting it. The guy sums up the brutal truth behind Duke hate in the final sentence. It's just good ole fashioned jealousy.

Good article! I posted it on the CF myspace page. I hope Duke wins the whole thing.

What a great article and I like his conclusion that most of the Duke haters wished their own team had more white players subconsciously.

I think a major reason fans hate white players is that they believe they are athletically inferior. Thus, it drives them crazy seeing an "unathletic" white guy beat their team. Plus, hating most black players might seem racist so they wouldn't want to do that.

Duke has produced many good NBA players. J.J Redick is a very solid backup and could be starter on many teams. Laettner had a very nice career and averaged 12.8 ppg over that career. Hurley would have been an All-Star if not for the accident. All these guys are much more athletic than the media would have you believe.

You know sooner or later the Whiteness of this team is going to draw fire from some race hustler. I look at Coach K as kind of like Billy Bean of the Oakland A's. Coach K has figured out there are White players out there with talent that no one is going after and have slipped through the cracks. But unlike Bean, he has taken this under-appreciated talent and turned it into a highly respected basketball program.----- Some reason I don't believe espn will print this article.

I love it! WPWW! I sent that article onto some buddies (including one DWF who hates Duke).

AP article today expresses Coach K's feelings about all the jealousy and hate with Duke's incredible success over the past few decades:

"If you want to hate us because we have kids who go to school, graduate, play solid, team ball and win a lot, go ahead."

Compare/Contrast this with Bob Huggins' thugs for 15 years in Cincinnati.

Coach K and Duke University basketball=WINNERS.

I wonder how good the youngest Plumlee will be at Duke. He's slightly taller than these two and is supposedly even better.

My DWF buddy actually said Laettner was on-par with (Hawks former Center) Jon "Contract" Koncak!
smiley8.gif
I quickly clarified that "Contract" couldn't lace Laettner's shoes (in the NBA or college). Here's the key stats (which I gave my pal)...

Koncak's averages...
PPG - 4.5 (best season was 8.3, rookie year)
RPG - 4.9 (best season was 87-88, 6.8 RPG)

Laettner's averages (playing PF)...
PPG - 12.8 (best season was 18.1, rookie year)
RPG - 6.7 (best season was 96-97, 8.8)

***Laettner was an All-Star during the 96-97 (for Atlanta)....7 pts, 11 rbnds, 1 steals, 1 block & 2 assists

Do the members think the DWFs really would prefer white athletes?
Noticed nobody answered this. I think there is a solid minority (maybe a 1/3) of DWFs who love successful white guys on their teams more than successful black guys. It's not uncommon in NBA arenas, for instance, for a white player to get the most cheers. However, there is a feeling among most DWFs that a white player could be replaced by a more athletically gifted black player. I don't know how many times I heard people say Blair White from MSU couldn't be the #1 receiver because of his lack of raw talent (which he proved wrong by testing out as the quickest WR at the combine)or how many people said Mike Furrey from the Lions needed to be replaced despite nearly leading the NFL in catches and obviously being a top athlete considering he's one of the few NFL players who has had success on offense and defense (safety). When I told one of my friends recently that MSU got a top big man recruit his first question was "Is he black or white?" When I said black he responded "yes!" Thus I had to remind him that Paul Davis and Goron Suton have been, by far, the best big men for his team (Davis even avg. about 19 ppg and 9 rpg and lead his team to a Final 4), whereas most of the top recruited black big men have turned into role players. That came from a guy who I've even been able to convince that whites are not athletically inferior to blacks, yet that is still his first instinct through years of indoctrination. I bet many Philly Eagle fans said that Kevin Curtis needed to be replaced as the #1 even as he was having a 1200+ receiving season with his 4.3 speed.

I think the only way, in football, that a white WR or DB will be embraced is if he is so undeniably good, like a Dallas Clark or John Lynch. If he is just a normal player, who doesn't have eye popping plays, he will draw all kinds of heat from most DWFs.

I think basketball is slightly different, but it is not as caste as football in terms of position. DWFs in basketball, I believe, accept good white players on their team easier than a football fan will accept a white RB, WR or DB.

All that being said, I think most DWFs would accept a mostly white team in basketball, such as Wisconsin, Duke or the 80s Celtics. If an NFL team had a white RB, top white WR, white QB, white coach, white DB, for example, I think their would be a lot of guilt rooting for them. In basketball, they would only feel guilty if there were no black players. Edited by: Fightingtowin

You are correct Fightintowin. Brian Scalbarine from the Celtics is a fan favorite as is David Lee and Gallinari of the Knicks. Not all of the DWF's are completely drunk. Sometimes they can act sober.
