There was a man also named Jim Taylor who played for the Chicago Cardinals in the late 50's. It is his picture shown above, an error by the card company.


The only white RB's to gain 1000 yards for the Houston Oilers were Charlie Tolar in 1962, andHoyle Granger in 1967. Billy Cannon's best as an Oiler was 948 in 1961.


A runner who is seldom mentioned by anybody, is Dickie Post. Post played for San Diegofrom 1967-70, and finished up with Houston in 1971. He was small. 5-9, about 190. His knees were shot after 4 years. Heled the AFL with 873 yards in 1969, andmade many "highlight film" runs. Also, runners didn't get 25-30 carries a gameat that time in the AFL. Did Post only lead the AFL because of inferior competition? Well, he finished ahead of Floyd Little, Jim Nance, and O.J. Simpson, not exactly inferior runners.

I just figured out who it is, Hoyle Granger. He led the AFL in rushing in 1967 with 1,194 yards. He also had good years in 68-69.

Hubbard had a very impressive lifetime rushing average of 4.8. He easilycould havehad several 1,000 yard seasons with more carries. His highest number ofrushes was 219 in a 14 game schedule. Edgerrin James has already had 223 carries after only nine games.

Interesting question White Shogun. I checked to see who was sharing the backfield in his biggest year. Other ball carriers accounted for 284 reps to his 219.

The extremely well paid (and still well fed) John Madden of today would never give aMarv Hubbard (or even van Eeghan) a chance were he still coaching. The NFL was half black whenMadden coached Hubbard, van Eeghan, Beletnikof and others in the '70s, yet somehow not asingle white man has running skillsnow. Makes you wonder ifMadden & Co. havea conscience or if they're just totally jaded and decadent.

The Raiders of the late 60's and 70's had an offense that gave the most carries to the fullback. O.J. Simpson noted this when he played in the 1974 Pro Bowl. John Madden and the Raider staff coached the AFC team, using the Raider offense.


Yes, winning teams of the 60's and 70's often featured a white FB who gained consistent yardage and didn't fumble much.

Paul Hornung never rushed for 1,000 yards in a season, but because of his versatility he still holds one of the best NFL records -- most points scored in a season, 176 in the 12 game schedule of 1960, achieved through rushing, receiving and kicking. He even threw two TD passes but they don't count as part of the record.

Excellent article on Paul Hornung. Another Green Bay great before my time. It's because of guys like that that football became so popular.

Roger Stabauch was my first memory of a great White player in my childhood. I was blessed to see him play a few times in person. No one can ever take away these favorable memories ('71-77) of a time when real football still existed and the caste system wasn't full on crazy.

A very nice article. Not everything boils down to stats. Hornung was a winner and that is what sports is supposed to be all about.

And Hornung's name is coming up a lot lately because of Taysom Hill. I see a mini trend developing. There is a stud WR/RB/QB Texas commit out of Arizona named Jake Smith. Blazing speed and electric moves. He might be the most exciting player from the class of 2019. Will deeply entrenched caste Texas make room for him next season?
