I hope Heath Evans gets to the century mark on Sunday a feat rarely seen these years.If your a fan of anyone team think back about the last time a white RB had a 100 yard game.As a Dallas fan the last guy to do it was Scott Laidlaw who pulled the trick on Thanksgiving Day 1978.So that would be 27 years next week.Ouch!This got me thinking nostalgic.Never mind 100 yard games by white guys,but 1000 yard seasons.How many did it? Back in the summer a group of black pitchers were going around calling themselves the Black Aces,who were a select group of Black-American hurlers who were 20 game winners.By the way Fergie Jenkins was included in that group and he was born in Chatham,Ontario.Anyway,wouldn't it be cool if there was a group called the White Aces.A group of pale-faced warriors who hit four figures in a single season in rushing.I know,It will never happen,but it sure would bring some attention to the trials and tribulations of the white RB.I did some checking and came up with this list of white 1000 yard guys.Tony Candeo,Rick Casares,John David Crow,Hoyle Granger,Charley Tolar,John Taylor,Larry Csonka,Jim Otis,Marv Hubbard,Rocky Blier,Steve Owens,Mark van Eaghen and Craig James.I think I might of left someone of that list,maybe some of you guys can add to the list.This list would have been bigger but since the NFL played 12 and 14 game schedules for a bit,that hurt a lot of players chances.</BLOCKQUOTE>

That's a good list. John Riggins of course is a member in good standing, and I think "John Taylor" is Jim Taylor. I thought Keith Lincoln and Hugh McElhenny had rushed for a thousand yards but just checked and neither did.

Jim Kiick went over 1,000 yards rushing and recieving combined 4 years in a row and made the Pro Bowl twice. Can we squeeze him in here?

He only did it several times.As far as Jim Kiick goes he deserves an honourable mention.One more question.Steve van Buren.I really don't know if this guy is black or white.

Me too. I was in 12th grade at the time and still giddy over the Eagles' Meadowlands miracle 4 days before. I think I watched the Laidlaw game (against Washington) at my cousin's that day (and had dinner there). Laidlaw laid down the law that day.

Mike Alstott had a 949 rushing yards in 1999, almost a 1000

... Mike also had 126 yards on 17 carries vs Cleveland back in 2002 and in another game vs Atlanta he had 95 yards on 13 carries...


hopefully he will repeat that kind ofsuccess when Bucs face Atlanta this Sunday


i know Brock Forsey broke a hundred rushing yards for Bears in 2003 (132 yards vs Arizona, 1 td), and Hoover had like 96 for Panthers last season...

Alstott has had 7 100 yard games in his NFL career, none since Jon Gruden became head coach.


Hoover gained over 100 yards in 2000 during a Monday Night Game in Carolinaas Panthers fans loudly shouted his name.


All these recruiters and coaches too timid to develop and play white running backs, when so many football fans would love to cheer for some.

That was a really cool video.Forsey did all the drills with ease.Anyone who saw him play at Boise State or on the Bears can see how quick he can cut on a dime.The guy really changes directions extremley well.It's just too bad the the stupid NFL screwed him over so bad.I'm really sad that a team like the Colts didn't even give him a look.I wonder if they will sign E.James to a long term deal.If not,maybe Lumsden or Forsey can try to sign on there.

Alstott has been a joy to watch over the last decade.He is just so powerful and fast.I laugh sometimes at watching the defenders just hang on for their life.lol.
Hopefully we can see at least a few more big games out of him.It was nice to see him score some td's last week!

I am not sure what those drills show. The guy has hours of game video from college, that should be enough to prove he is a good player. I can understand looking at certain measureables like 40 time, vertical, etc., but what does jumping over dummies with a football in your hand show that you can't see on game film?

Paul Hornung never rushed for 1,000 yards in a season, but because of his versatility he still holds one of the best NFL records -- most points scored in a season, 176 in the 12 game schedule of 1960, achieved through rushing, receiving and kicking. He even threw two TD passes but they don't count as part of the record.

Rocky Bleier had a 1000 yard season. Dave Osborn just missed 1000
yards with 972 in 1967. Ken Williard had 967 in 1968., the same year
Tom Woodeshick had 947. Ed Podolak was a great back, and would
have been a 1000 yard rusher if he'd been given enough carries. Nick
Eddy was one of the most talented college RBs of the 1960s, but he just
couldn't stay healthy. The aforementioned Joe Don Looney had incredible
skills, but was mentally unstable. If he was playing today, he'd be on
ESPN all the time. Oh wait, no he wouldn't.- skin pigmentation
disorder. Even then, lots of top college backs just never got the
chance to be a franchise back in the NFL. Donny Anderson had a decent
career, but he should have produced more, given his talent. Steve Owens
was one of the last really highly touted white RBs coming out of
college (Oklahoma), but it took a few years for the Lions to finally
give him a chance, and that didn't last too long. Jim Otis was great at
Ohio State, but was never given a chance with the Chiefs. He had a
second life with the Cardinals, and produced a few big seasons there.
Remember Johnny Musso? Great college back (probably the last white RB
for Alabama), but just was never given a real chance in the NFL.

Musso played at Alabama from 69-71, and had 1,000 yard All-American seasons in 70 and 71. He had 34 TD's in his career there, and that record stood for 27 years. Steve Bisceglia was a fullback in the wishbone in 1971 and 1972 as well. I think you are right though, Musso was the last featured back who was white. Bryant recruited several black backs who would carry most of the load from 72 on.

I was reading J.B.Cash's latest column and he mentioned Dave Hampton.Don't know too much about him so I checked out his numbers.He was a back-up in Green Bay from 69-71 and was a kick-returner.He returned one kick in that span that went for a 101 yard TD.He got his chance to start when he went to Atlanta in 1972 where he just missed 1000 and ended up getting 995.The following year he ran for 997 then finally he hit paydirt with 1002 in 1975.This guy must have been really flying below the radar since there is not much on him.Boy,some of the RB's you guys have brought up like Nick Eddy,Johnny Musso and Joe Don Looney,this is just great.I love reading up on all these fine white RB's.

Also, continuing on that Alabama thing, "Major" Ogilvie was a good RB from 77-80. I wonder if he got in the NFL?

It's funny, when I was a small child I hated John Riggins because he was so good at beating my beloved Dallas Cowboys. He seemed unstoppable. If I were an adult at that time, the Redskins would have been my favorite team because of him.

I am glad you guys didn't forget John David Crow, he is a legend to the Aggie Nation. He was the Athletic Director at A&M when I was playing and he was always in the locker room before and after every game. In his role as athletic director, his job was to hob-nob with the big Aggie donors and he would bring some of those guys with him on his visits to the locker room. I could tell though he would have rather just hung out and talk to the players rather than entertaining rich donors. I guess once a player, always a player. I am blessed that I got meet him and know him as a person. He is a true legend of the game.

Musso's son Brian was a standout wide receiver for Northwestern several years ago. But he wasn't particularly big or particularly fast, which of course doomed any chance he had of gettting an opportunity inthe NFL. We all know that since the days of Steve Largent only black receiversare genetically capable of beingproductive at the pro level if they aren't big and fast.

Great Pics! I know of another white Ace from the late 60's/early 70's. I don't know his last name though. He played for the Oilers around 71 or 72, and had a couple of 1,000 yard seasons before injury ended his career. Maybe some of you guys with longer memories than me will know who it is. I have been wondering for a year.
