Ortiz is a big fat black guy. At least we don't have to hear about his "superior athleticism". Ortiz could have been a big time goat in the ALCS when for some reason unknown to logic he tried to steal second base. He did get some big hits and Manny owes this guy big time for letting everyone forget about how poorly he hit. The Sox have always had a fat black first baseman. I think that's the only place they are allowed to play. I can name 2 right off the bat: George Scott and Mo Vaughn. Anymore?

I'm watching Manny give away the game with his poor play in left. Two ridiculous errors! The guy is pathetic. they would not let a white guy who was such a poor fielder out of the infield.

Welcome to the board, bjan. Ortiz is almost 29 years old, which surprised me.I thought he was younger. He was on the Twins for six years and had quite mediocre stats, no real power to speak of until his first year with the Red Sox last year.

If he's anything like the other one-dimensional, big, overweight black power hitters he'll soon be in swift decline. These guys are rarely effective past the age of 31 or 32 and when they lose it they lose it quickly. Ortiz reminds me of Mo Vaughn; he's built a lot like him. Vaughn had some really nice seasons with Boston, got a huge guaranteed contract with the Mets when he was 33 and was out of baseball the next year.

Jaxvid you're right that Ramierez is a real butcher in the field. There's more than a few baseball players who can hit homeruns but are terrible in the fundamentals of the game and have no interest in learning them.

I was laughing so hard watching Manny in left field.
Very entertaining. Sometimes I wish I was a
commentator for some of these games. I would've
ripped him a new one. (And then got promptly fired
probably.) I don't care how well you hit. He's making
20 million dollars a year, and he's playing in the
World Series. He has to make easy plays like that. I
don't think he even needed to slide on the second
error. Fortunately for him, Bellhorn got him off the
hook by clanging another homer off the foul pole.

And as for fat black first basemen, Randall Simon is
another one. Dimitri Young might have played some
first base when he was in the National League. I
guess he's a DH now.

Dimitri Young does play some first for Detroit but they are crowded there so he usually DH's. As a joke sometimes they will put him in left which must piss the pitchers off. I will say this about Dimitri---he works hard! He's just a lousey fielder. For a real chuckle when Detroit got him they projected him as their everyday third baseman, that didn't last through the first spring training game.

As I have mentioned before.....where are the black third baseman?? They are as rare as a white man in the defensive secondary. A wooden nickel to anybody that can name 10 major league black third baseman with over 500 games at 3rd.

Jaxvid, I just looked up the stats of "Dewey" Evans, forgot how excellent he was at bat and in the field, great player.

If you gave me a million bucks to name 5 black third baseman I couldn't do it, not to mention good ones. People don't realize the difference between speed and quickness. Brooks Robinson was not a fast runner but was very quick reflexively. Third basemen can be quick as a catto get in position to snag a baseball and release it quickly to throw out a runner. Gotta have a good arm for long throws and courageous as hell facing a line drivewhen cheating down the line.Edited by: Bart

Terry Pendelton is the only black 3rd baseman that had a glove. It will take some research to find more. There were others who played there but stunk it up so bad they aren't worth mentioning.
