England has some fine young talent in the sprints. Dan Talbot won the 100 at Loughborough today in a new p.b. of 10.21! This is a great time. He had a strong wind behind him but the time was legal and he beat some high quality sprinters. Here is a short article about Dan from a short while back.

His name is Evan Taylor and he is a sophomore at Northern Colorado.
His best times are 10.43 and 20.88.

Tabot is talented regardless. The article is stupid though because 3 whites have already went sub 20 and we will have many more acheive this goal in the coming years. The person who wrote this article must buy into Jon Entine and his stupid book "Taboo" which is full of lies.

also,to updatemy post above regarding Ethan Bly ...

i mistakenly said that only 4 runners had dipped under Bly's time of 11.01 in the 100. actually, 10 runners managed to clip the 11-second mark: there were four 10.8s andthree10.9s. (most of which i missed). i was correct, though, in that the fastest time of the year was only a 10.71. that being said, sophomore Ethan Bly looked to be the top White sprinter this year, narrowly missing a sub-11 100 (11.01) while also finishingwith an overalltop-10 mark in the state in the 200 (22.27) and the 400 (a non-spectacular 50.10). all that being said, Bly likely would have posted a MUCH faster time had he been able to run in the Meet of Champs, which is where almost all of those times i missed were posted.

like i said, it was a slow year in Arkansas sprinting.

one name i didn't mention was Chance Tanner of Waldron High School. he posted the state's second-fastest 200-meters (21.66, a mere .01 off the top mark) and the third-fastest 400 (48.63). unfortunately, Chance was a senior, and i don't know if he'll be running in college.

here's a man to watch. Dai Greene won the 400h in Delhi and in this article Kris Akabusi (Brit record holder) praised him lavishly saying he was absolutely certain Dai would be the next record holder.

Amazingly their have only been two Brit record holders in this event since David Hemery set that great 48.12 in 1968

In non-Lemaitre news, Chis O'Hare, the young Scot, sophomore at Tulsa, I believe, ran a 3:38 1500. Very promising time, given his youth. A young Brit, Adam Cotton, went 3:41--he's still under 20 years of age. Here in the US, Austin Mudd continues to be on fire. The high school senior just went 1:48.09 to win a national championship meet. Finally, a 16-yr-old girl in Britain, Jessica Judd, went 2: 02.7. Oh, and Aisling Cuffe set a national high school record in the 2-mile. We've talked about her before. She's a senior. And the magical seasons continued for high schoolers Amy Weissenbach (great split in 1200 leg of DMR) and frosh Mary Cain, who despite her youth is in the top 3 nationally at 800, 1500, and 3000. People are already calling her the next Mary Decker.

Of course, all of these kids are young, and, especially with girls, they sometimes do their fastest running before they start to fill out completely from puberty. So there's no guarantee any of these develop into Olympians, but what they are doing now is pretty impressive.

Jake Paulsen of Cozad High School in Nebraskaposted the fastest 100-meters (10.60) of any high school kid in the state for the 2011 track season. oh, and he's a 9th-grader.

Jakealso posted a personal-best electronic time of 21.87 in the 200-meters, good for the third-fastest timein the state. (he alsoran a 21.74, but it wasn't with an automatic timer, so i don't think it counts in the state standings.) additionally, he cleared 6-foot-4 in the high jump.

not bad for a 9th-grader, eh?

The year was 1992 and a good looking, fearless 9th grade flash from Beatrice named Kenton Peterson was mowing down every experienced Class B sprinter around at the State Track Championships at Omaha Burke. Peterson slammed the Class B sprints and won a all-class Gold Medal in the 100, helping the Orangeman to a state track title that season. Peterson went on to have an illustrious track career at Beatrice and was a long distance threat as a wide receiver on the gridiron. But the speedy Peterson may have a successor to his laurels in the person of Cozad Freshman, Jake Paulsen.


Jake Paulsen started stirring things up on the track last season as an 8th grade runner when he won slammed the sprints at the first ever Nebraska Middle School Track &amp; Field Championships in Gothenburg. Paulsen ran an :11.35 in the 100 and a :23.53 in the 200. He also won the high jump with a leap of 5-11. Paulsen picked up where he left of as a middle school competitor when he swept the sprints at the Ed Moore Invitational in Ogallala on April 2nd. Jake bested seasoned Gothenburg sprinter, Tannor Morczek in the 100 and 200 and posted some nifty marks in both races. Paulsen ran an 11 flat in the 100 and blazed to a :22.74 in the 200. He also won the high jump for good measure with a jump of 6-2". But it was just 4 days ago on a beautiful day in Minden that the young Cozad freshman really rocketed on to the Nebraska high school track scene..............big time.


Jake Paulsen bested Adams Central's Ashton LeBar in the 100 on his way to a blazing :10.88. LeBar was the state's leader in that event going into that race with a previous time of :10.73. The best was yet to come in the 200 meter dash when Jake Paulsen shot out of the blocks like a 4th of July fire cracker and sped to an incredible :21.81 winning time while leaving the field to view him from the backside. Remember friends........this young man is a FRESHMAN.


I started hearing about Jake Paulsen in the Fall of 2009 when he ran all over the place on the gridiron for Cozad's 8th grade football squad. I lost count of his touchdowns at 26 after they had posted scores in the 60's the first 4 games. Cozad head football coach Ron Bubak told me they didn't keep stats for 8th grade football at Cozad, but did indicate that Paulsen was a pretty tough boy to catch once he "got" the corner on a wide sweep. I guess. My good friend, Dave Clark, who is an assistant track coach at Gothenburg, told me of Paulsen's track feats as an 8th grade runner, so I knew of Jake's feats in both sports a year before he was in high school. Looks like Mr. Paulsen has made the transition from middle school to high school in one heck of a hurry.


I thought Kenton Peterson was one of the finest younger sprinters I had ever witnessed and that was almost 20 seasons ago. His performance at the 1992 State Track Meet was astounding, but it seems Jake Paulsen may be on track to step into the following footsteps of Peterson's legacy. I have not seen the Cozad flyer run as of yet, but Jake Paulsen informed me that if I did get to a meet he would try to rip off a :21.5 in that 200 meter jaunt. It's not often this kind of sprinter comes along and with that kind of all out running and sudden bursts out of the blocks, there is that continued high risk of injury......especially when you are running in the 10's in the 100 and 21's in the two. You just have to hope that fate and good fortune is on the side of young Jake Paulsen because it appears that the sky is the limit for this kid right now.


So, if you are a serious track fan and you want to see this young sprint sensation in action and you live in Grand Island.......you just hit the jackpot. Cozad will be competing in the Northwest Invitational at Viking field next Thursday, April 21st. Let's keep our fingers crossed for gorgeous weather and an opportunity for Jake "I B Haulin" Paulsen to explode in the sprints. If you bring your cell phone and it has camera capabilities and you want to snap a shot of Jake Paulsen, you best be quick or he'll be gone in a flash.

On Saturday, Cozad Haymakers freshman Jake Paulsen clocked the fastest 100 meter of the 2011 Nebraska high school track and field season, by blazing to the finish line in 10.60 seconds. Paulsen also took home individual gold in the 200 meter (21.87) and high jump (6-1). Both sprint events were reported as automatic times, according to athletic.net postings.

a lot of attention was given to Christophe Lemaitre's spectacular 200-meter run the other day, and rightfully so. however, overlooked in The Master's brilliance was a nice performance by another young sprinter ... one whose name idon't recall havingbeen mentioned on the boards.

Pavel Maslak of the Czech Republic ran stride for stride with another (more highly touted here at CF) talented young sprinter, Daniel Talbot of Great Britain, before nipping Talbot at the tape. Maslak took second place with a time of 20.91, just .05 off his personal best. and, obviously like LeMaitre, this time came in terrible conditions.

likeTalbot, Maslak (who holds his nation'sJunior Record with a 10.46 100-meters)is just 20 years of age, so his future is very much ahead of him.

another 20 year old 200-meter sprinter that i don't recallseeing mentioned is Belarus' AliaksandrLinnik. Linnik, who holds his nation's Junior- and U-20 records for everything from the 100- (10.40) and 200-meters (20.81) to the 110-hurdles (13.41), has a season-best time of 20.90 which came into a -1.8 wind. Linnik, you may recall, took home a Silver in the 200 in the 2010 World Junior Championships.

Talbot, Maslak, and Linnik are three 20-year olds who have a chance to be special in the deuce in the coming years.

Great write up Jimmy. You are right about all three of these young sprinters. Pavel Maslak is so short but he is built like a pit bull. All muscle and his stride ratio is incredible. There are many ways to gun fast. Lemaitre does it with the long strides like a Cheetah while Maslak just puts his feet down on the track alot quicker. Talbot has some incredible talent and I haven't seen Linnik race yet. I'm anxious to watch him sometime soon. Another guy to keep an eye on is Sam Watts on th U.K. He is also a very talented sprinter that has only just began his career.

good find, white lightning. whilst i was reading the article you linked, i checked out the other young sprinter mentioned in it: Jarrod Geddes. well, it turns out young Jarrod was the first Aussie sprinter to qualify for the World Youth Championships in the 100 in nine years, when he did so on a run back in October of 2010. i guess that makes him the fastest Aussie youth sprinter in nearly a decade. so, we have two young Australians (Donovan took second in the 100 when the two went head to head)who will be competing in the short sprints. nothing like some competition to encourage more participation and better results!

a statement from this interview with Geddes lends credence to that view. i shall quote the pertinentexcerpt below:

ANSW: Your progression has closely followed that of an older squad member Jake Hammond (2010 WJ semi-finalist). He is a good comparison for you and maybe there is a little rivalry as you break his records?
<STRONG style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal">Jarrod Geddes[/b]: It's funny you should ask this question because before my race this week, my coach was giving me the times of Jake when he was 17 which was 10.63. There is a rivalry in our training group to be the fastest but also we are very happy and proud of one another. I am very lucky to have Jake to train with because he gives advice on international competitions and how to handle things, and because he has already gone through it, it also helps me with my running. In our training group we have three athletes under 10.8 which also helps to make you run faster.

as was stated in the above interview link, Geddes' best time in the 100 is 10.67, although he has run a windy 10.45. Jarrod rarely runs the 200.

Andrew Robertson ran a wind legal 10.29 for a new personal best. This kid is very young and we need to keep a close eye on him. He is very short for a sprinter but he has really good turnover and a nice start. Hoping he can continue to improve over the summer.

I forgot to add some more news. Adam Gemeli ran a 10.23 wind aided(2.8) to finish in 2nd place in the mens under 20 race! This kid is so raw. He really needs to stick with track. His talent is incredible for someone with so little experience. I guess you could say he is a natural.

Hugh Donovan and Jarrod Geddes were 2 of the 3 fastest qualifiers in the 100m today at the World Youth Games.
Donovan ran 10.60, Geddes 10.66.
2nd fastest qualifier was a Japanese kid, Kazumo Oseto, at 10.65.
Let's hope it stays about that way come the Finals.
