I am a life-long fan of boxing, but one of the things that really bothers me about this sport is to see when guys are killed in the ring or permanently injured and it happens quite regularly which is a very unfortunate fact. Pretty much every year, you hear of 1 or 2 deaths as a result of boxing and you also hear of several brain bleeds.

Last night, in London, England, Nick Blackwell collapsed after being stopped on Doctor's advice against Chris Eubank Jr., Blackwell was taken to hospital where a scan revealed a brain bleed. He is now in coma and may require neuro-surgery to fix the bleed and put down swelling. Needless to say, it's never a good thing when a boxer suffers a brain bleed and it can have long lasting permanent disabling effects.

I didn't watch the fight live, but looking at their records, you get the idea that this fight was a bit of a "mismatch". Eubank Jr is pretty much at world title level, so why is he fighting a guy who is 19-3-1 at domestic level? I've seen worse mismatches don't get me wrong, but, still Eubank Jr should be fighting harder opposition than this and he has in the past. No surprise that the fight was a bit of a mismatch.

Best wishes to Nick Blackwell and hoping for a good recovery.

Update on this story:

Nick Blackwell remains in coma but so far it's looking good according to Doctors. There is talk about him making a good recovery, which would be great.

David Haye, who has received a lot of criticism on this site, has shown a lot of class in pledging to donate more than 50,000 pounds (more than 100,000$ USD) to Blackwell. Haye was also hospitalized at one point in his career and says it was the worst feeling in the world. He also says that he feels bad Blackwell won't be able to box anymore and is just trying to help him out financially. Haye is under absolutely no obligation to do this, and in my opinion deserves respect for showing class (similar to Sergio Martinez, who donated money when Mago was hurt).

Blackwell awakes from his coma! Was last seen talking to loved ones at this bed side. I hope for full recovery and a life away from boxing.

I saw this live and while it was a gym workout for Eubank and his pops wondered out loud why the referee didn't stop the fight earlier Blackwell was never in danger of being counted out. I would say the beating Briggs took from Vitali was worse than this. You could argue that his corner could have stopped the fight earlier when it was obvious Blackwell couldn't knock out Eubank and was too far behind on points to win the fight by any other way but getting a knock out.

If there's honestly no hope in winning then there's no need to continue to fight. Expect a lot of early stoppages for the next while in the U.K.. If the corners won't manage the fights then the refs are going to have to take over.
