I am a life-long fan of boxing, but one of the things that really bothers me about this sport is to see when guys are killed in the ring or permanently injured and it happens quite regularly which is a very unfortunate fact. Pretty much every year, you hear of 1 or 2 deaths as a result of boxing and you also hear of several brain bleeds.
Last night, in London, England, Nick Blackwell collapsed after being stopped on Doctor's advice against Chris Eubank Jr., Blackwell was taken to hospital where a scan revealed a brain bleed. He is now in coma and may require neuro-surgery to fix the bleed and put down swelling. Needless to say, it's never a good thing when a boxer suffers a brain bleed and it can have long lasting permanent disabling effects.
I didn't watch the fight live, but looking at their records, you get the idea that this fight was a bit of a "mismatch". Eubank Jr is pretty much at world title level, so why is he fighting a guy who is 19-3-1 at domestic level? I've seen worse mismatches don't get me wrong, but, still Eubank Jr should be fighting harder opposition than this and he has in the past. No surprise that the fight was a bit of a mismatch.
Best wishes to Nick Blackwell and hoping for a good recovery.
