It was tough watching Phil lose the U.S. Open, almost as tough as having to listen to Johnny Miller all day. Miller in my book has now joined Bill Walton as the best examples of totalCaste System idiots. Always a goofball, Miller was just vicious in his criticism the entire final round toward Mickelson and every other golfer, as if the conditions and the golf course had nothing to do with the high scores. It was the same course where Hale Irwin won with a +7 in 1974, but I somehow doubt there was Caste System announcers back then ripping on the field all day long. At one point Miller even said something to the effect that Tiger Woods must be watching at home and shaking his head. The way he played the first two rounds, Woods would have been lucky to break 80 today. I kept hoping Dan Hicks would reach over and choke Miller, or at least gag him.


Mickelson's driving was what cost him the tournament. It wasn't a pretty sight, but it was a brutal course. No one was going to be shooting 68 today.
 
I was rooting for Jim Furyk. IMHO, that is the guy thats on the cusp of greatness. His style of play to me is the epitome of concentration and technical execution.

Give credit to Ogilvy. He grinded it out on a tough course and put himself in an excellent position to either win, go to playoff , or collect some nice second place major tournament cash.
 
Furyk does have a very nice combination of consistency and mental toughness. Ogilvy won the Match Play tournament earlier this year and has been in contention in just about every tournament he'splayed in '06. He was a worthy winner. He had his share of luck with achip inpar on 17 that would have gone way past the hole otherwise, but you need some luck to win.


Colin Montgomery was the player who "choked" more than Mickelson. Mickelson played brilliantly except for his way-off driving. Montgomery's iron shoton 18 was atrocious after a perfect tee shot. A par and he would have won, a bogey and he would be in a playoff with Ogilvy. It's too bad because it was probably his last hurrah in a major.
 
That was the craziest thing. One of the older announcers midway through Phil's round said that he thought it was impossible to win the Open without hitting the fairways and then went on to say "I guess I am wrong" because Phil looked to be on his way despite horrible driving. Turns out the wise one was right--Phi's driving was poor and that end in the end caught up with him. Furyk bummed me out. Lack of concetration on three late putts cost him the tournament. I like his game. Anyway we can't be surprised about Montgomery who is the worst choker I recall. Phil lost his mind a bit but this new kid Ogilvy looks like a good all around athlete and the golf. Johnny Miller was practically cursing--calm down mate. channel was raving about his potential. So out of the dust maybe a new star.
 
Sorry I meant Golf Channel was raving about Ogilvy's potential. Nice to see an athletic kid come to the front. Phil is more Pilsbury doughboy not that there is anything wrong with that--poor guy was he pissed at the end--and can't blaim him.
 
I missed that particular comment by Miller. His Tigeritis is out of hand. Hicks was saying something about what a good day it was and Miller remarked all that was missing was Tiger. Heck, he might as well have thrown Wie in there too, I know he's commented something to the effect that she will make Anika look like another run of the mill player.

I like Furyk also. I keep envisioning him as someone in a pair of overalls just going about his business. Strange, I know.

We'll never know about that until Wie actually competes in a women's tournament and stops trying to play in the men's.

Man the media has been brutal on Mickelson. It's a good chance for them to rip on the white guys hero and they know it. The local papers were calling Mickelson out of control and just ripping him. I guess finishing second is not good enough. At least he made the cut

Man they love to hate this guy.
