Weights Kauffman 221Grano 218

These two were both decorated amateurs and the best American Heavyweight hopefuls we have. It's a shame they have to face each other. Boxing writer David Avila said "Travis Kauffman may be the best kept secret in America". We'll see tonight. Edited by: Blue Devils

The powers that be always want young ,white ,up and comers to face each other. Sort of tenderizing them well before they face a negro, in order to assure a win for the black. I don't think it is right and someone always leaves these fights a bit more compromised.

Guys, I've seen Grano and he is way too small for the heavyweights. He is listed at 6'2 but is more like 6'1. Grano is a cruiserweight who should move down. Kauffman will blow him away early but I don't like him coming in at a very low 221. He needs to be up to 230 like usual.

From Fightnews

In a very exciting fight, heavyweight Tony Grano (16-1-1, 13 KOs) scored a fourth round KO over previously undefeated Travis Kauffman (18-1, 15 KOs) on Friday night at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif. Both fighters were rocked in the fight and after Grano was almost out on his feet early in the fourth, he recovered and came back with a brutal assault that finally sent an exhausted Kauffman to the deck at 2:56.

I thought I made a Tony Grano thread a while back...I searched for it but I couldn't find it.

This was an exciting heavyweight fight.

I could see during even the first round somone would be KOed since they were both landing bombs. It was impressive how Grano came back after being seriously hurt in the 4th round to KO Kauffman.

Grano threw a low blow when he was hurt to buy time, and then "lost" his mouthpiece and so had time to recover. Then he caught Kauffman with a series of big punches and when Travis finally went down, he was unable to get back on his feet although he tried.

I could see it coming. This was a case of mental toughness overcoming more talent I think. Kauffman needs to work on pacing, defense and conditioning.

I knew Grano would be tough when they said he was a former championship wrestler.

One thing I dislike about Kaufman is the alias "Great White Hope." We really should get away from those kinds of stereotypes. Anyways how can he be the GWH if we have tons of white champions? He should call himself the "Great American Hope."

I saw a copy of this fight and Kaufmann is more of suspect than a prospect. His chin isn't nearly good enough to make it. Also he isn't really spectacular in any aspect of the game. He is more solid in his skills and athleticism. It's hard to make it to the top with that skill set and a weak chin.

Gary Shaw, Team Kauffman File Protest Over Grano Loss

Reading, PA - Team Kauffman and Gary Shaw Productions have formally filed a protest with the California State Athletic Commission seeking to overturn the verdict of last Friday's fight between Travis Kauffman and Tony Grano at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, CA.

In the last 1:50 of the fourth round, six critical errors in judgments by referee Wayne Hedgepeth of New Jersey compromised the integrity of what had been a terrific heavyweight boxing match.

Kauffman had rallied over the first minute of the fourth round trying to finish off a fading Grano before Grano reverted to an illegal low blow at the 1:50 mark to buy some time. The referee never warned Grano for the blatant infraction.

Twenty seconds later Grano spit his mouthpiece out to buy time to recover. This happened in Grano's corner. The confused referee took Grano to a neutral corner before bringing him back to the correct corner and warning him about spitting out the mouthpiece.

With :33 left in the round Grano headbutts Kauffman without drawing a warning. Kauffman is besieged by a Grano rally but is responding defensively until pulling back in Grano's corner to avoid punches and hits the back of his head on a TV camera with 30 seconds left. At this point he becomes badly stunned. With 26 seconds left Grano hits Kauffman in the throat with an elbow. It seemed at that moment that the referee was going to intervene and issue a warning but backs away.

With 14 seconds left Kauffman's glove touches the canvas, which should have been scored a knockdown and a standing eight count administered. With Kauffman getting the count and Grano going to a neutral corner, Kauffman would have made it out of the round with a minute to recover.

Kauffman was then thrown to the canvas - not knocked down - by a clothesline from Grano. The blow that resulted in Kauffman going to the canvas was not a legal blow but a throwdown, which should not have been scored as a knockdown. Kauffman hurt his back on the fall and tripped over the referee as he tried to rise from his knees.

Marshall Kauffman, Travis' father and trainer, is taking efforts to shed light on these infractions to have the decision reversed to a no contest and build public demand for an immediate rematch.

"I say all of this to prove that the ref did a very poor job in the fight and it is his job to step in when needed," Kauffman was quoted in his letter to the commission. "If he would have stepped in for five seconds to either give Travis a standing eight count or to warn Grano then I would probably not be sending this email today because Travis would have had time to recover."

Grano-Brown Rematch

The rematch between heavyweights Tony "TNT"Â￾ Grano and Mark "Oak Tree"Â￾ Brown headlines the March 12 pro boxing card, "Brace For Impact,"Â￾ presented by Jimmy Burchfield's Classic Sports and Entertainment, Inc. (CES), in Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn. Brown (15-2, 7 KOs) overcame two knockdowns to stop Grano, fighting out of Hebron (CT), in the eighth round of their first bout in September 2008. Grano (16-1-1, 13 KOs), a 2005 U.S. National Championships winner and National Golden Gloves Tournament runner-up, has won two in a row since suffering his lone loss as a pro. The popular power-puncher is coming off of a sensational, nationally-televised knockout of previously-undefeated prospect Travis Kaufman (18-0) last September. Brown's eight-fight win streak was snapped last June on a short-notice fight when he lost to world-title challenger Fred Oquendo. Tickets for "Brace For Impact,"Â￾ priced at $40, $60 and $100, are available to purchase by calling 401.724.2253/2254.

Grano while small for a modern heavyweight is a notch better athletically than Mcbride. Tyson will lose to Grano unless he catches him cold. Tyson at this point can only beat total cannon fodder.

Grano is way too small to be anything more than a top 20-25 heavyweight. But, yes, he will defeat Tyson if this fight ever happens (which I doubt - remember in 2006 Tyson was supposed to fight a series of 3 round exhibitions?).

Sadly, there are no good white U.S. heavies on the horizon. Marrone, Mesi and Chapman retired, Minto is going down to cruiserweight and Grano should follow him there.

Kaufman is ok but his loss to Grano is not promising.Edited by: Liverlips

Huge win for Grano as he KOs former title challenger Davarryl Williamson in the 4th. He also KO'd Brian Minto earlier this year.

At 6'2, 220 he is too small to ever win a title or even be top 10. But if he were black he'd be fawned upon and be on HBO and ESPN like Eddie Chambers or Seth Mitchell.

The commentators were clearly rooting for Williamson. At one point I heard one say "Make no mistake Granos cash money is that hes white". The Knockout was a clean violent one too.

Yes, that was a nice KO.

The negro commentator was saying in as many words he wants the Klitschkos to lose their titles to African-Americans.

I much prefer to watch the fights on a foreign broadcast where the announcers speak a language that I don't understand rather than listening to the raving and babbling of the "American" tv pimps.

That brings up my #2 pet peeve about boxing (after corruption), namely there is no place in boxing today for men weighing a little over 200, while on the other hand the stoopid light weight classes are seperated by absurdly small parameters like three pounds.

I agree with that warewolf. How the heck did they come to settle on these weight classes anyway? It makes no sense at all.

You are completey right about that. I talk with young guys about this all of the time, they think it is the stupidest thing in the world. With the way the world has changed and the tremendous increase in weight, even for people "in shape", the ancient weight classes are worse then ridiculous. They hurt boxing because they make it seem so out of date.

The idea that guys who weigh the same as junior high school girls should be considered tough or great fighters is a joke to them. That's why MMA is cleaning boxings clock. Until the old *** jews and crooked blacks that control the game die off, nothing is going to change because they are profiting from it.

These lighter weight classes are kept alive because of Latino fighters and Asian fighters and some African fighters. Even with the influx of Eastern Euro and Western/Central Asians most aren't in the weight classes that are close to what Jockeys weigh. Recently US fighters have been winning belts in these classes and it's because of ethnic Mexicans and other ethnic Latinos.

I dont have a problem with weight classes for the tiny dudes, but 105, 108, 112, 115, 118? Thats silly as hell! Then you got a jump that goes from175 all the way to 200. Thats even more silly. Id like to see it changed to something like start at 110 for minimum mweight , and every 10 pounds have another weight class all the way to 200 for heavyweights.
