Why Tim Thomas Didn't Join His Teammates in Meeting Obama at the White House

While his colleagues from the Boston Bruins were visitng the White House earlier today, goaltender Tim Thomas was absent. Here is his personal explanation for why he did what he did. We can only hope more role-models follow in his footsteps.

Thomas statement on White House absence (via the NHL)

"I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.

This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.

Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT"

I'm surprised no one else has commented on this. It took a lot of guts in the era we live in for a public figure to take a stand like Tim Thomas did. I hope other public figures follow his example and start speaking out. All other issues of the day ultimately become moot if we end up living in a totalitarian police state.

If that's all that happens, he might be fortunate. If memory serves me correctly, ex-Packer tight end Mark Chumra "embarrassed" Bill Clinton and the Democraps in a similar way back in 1997. Not too long after, the "happily married" NFL player was hauled into jail for allegedly trying to have sex with a pair of teenage (17) babysitters in his own house. I don't recall the details completely and I'm too lazy to look them up, but I believe he was exonerated completly, yet he still saw his career come to an abrupt end and he's never really fully repaired his reputation, because the media made such a big deal about it -- CNN, Court TV, ESPN, ect.

Congratulations to Tim Thomas, who is obviously a Ron Paul supporter. Listening to Dan Patrick this morning who said Thomas should have attended because it was a "team event" and Thomas is part of the team. By that logic, then a "team event" at a church, mosque or a strip club would have to be attended by all members of the team despite any moral, religious or other principled objections.

Some of Thomas' use of capitalization reminds me of reading The Federalist Papers. Typically no one today would capitalize the words I highlighted in bold. Adopting that style might suggest Thomas has been reading things somewhat older than the latest "book" churned out by the pundit class. If so, good for him, and it certainly explains his political position.
