The Job Market Today / Re: 2 Week Notice Etiquette

Hey guys. I really would like to share a personal story from my life and I think it illustrates the erosion of morality and general courtesy in our society today. North American and European society is actually going backwards these days and I firmly believe quality of life is noticeably declining in Western Civilization. I also think my story depicts this decline:

First let me say that I am 23 year old male who has recently graduated from University. I have had about 5 or 6 professional jobs in my field, so I have a strong resume. I also currently have a great job.

Here's the thing: Recently Ive been offered a new position at a new company. I have been verbally told that I have the job. Ive also been told to give a 2 weeks notice to my current employer so that I can start a job with the new company.

I am a very professional, reasonable, and articulate man.

I also *know* from past experiences with changing jobs, that I am risking myself and putting myself in a bad situation by giving a 2 weeks notice. When I was 21, I was told I had received a job, gave my 2 weeks notice, and then I was not hired.

There is absolutely nothing that you can do legally as a worker, even if a company informs you to give a 2 weeks notice.

So you can literally end up losing 2 jobs. And you have no legal avenue with which to pursue any sort of compensation. The company has every single advantage over you to the point where it can ruin your career and you have no way to respond.

The point Im getting to is that as a worker, I never give a 2 weeks notice anymore and the reason I don't is because there is too much of a risk for me if the prospective employer suddenly backs out.

That really shows where society is heading when the company is favoured over the individual to the point where I don't even feel safe giving a 2 weeks notice anymore. Companies are given legal leeway to literally screw over your life and career. There is no morality or courtesy shown by companies or the law.

It would be ideal if companies honoured their word, but from my experience and many others, they don't.

Here's the actual answer to the problem. Get an offer letter. Whenever I am verbally offered a job I say yes that's fine I will make my decision when I see the offer letter. With an offer letter you have written proof that you were offered a job and the conditions of employment. If for some reason they don't give you the job then you have a document you can take to a lawyer and sue for damages. Very simple solution.

Yes I have received one.

But actually an offer of employment can be revoked, its not legally-binding and the company (at least in Canada) has the power to issue all of the above and then suddenly back out of hiring you.

Anyways, the point Im trying to make in this thread is nothing to do with bragging about myself. The point Im making is that I don't feel safe to give a 2 weeks notice anymore, and I would strongly advise all people *not* to give a 2weeks notice. There's just too much risk for the worker.

I think this illustrates some of the erosion in working standards/standards of workplace courtesy that were developed in the 1950s and 1960s.

To his credit, though, this poster (under 4 or 5 different screen names) has absorbed loads of abuse for his conceited ways, his effeminate love of fashion, his Kanadian Education, his alleged sexual promiscuity with white and Persian women, his bizarre personal photos (which he actually shared a few months back), and his other annoying religeous and racial obsessions. However, to my knowledge, he’s never once penned a angry retaliation of any sort. At least he’s always been friendly.
