Jack Dempsey was a man among boys. He was feared by everyone and he is still one of the greatest heavyweights in the history of boxing!
Part of the problem Dempsey had was that if he couldn't have a big stadium fight the profitability of staging a fight was much lower than this era as early in his reign there was no radio and film rights were still blocked because of the Johnson riots. Dempsey similar to Willard made more money doing vaudville shows and b grade movies than defending his title. Dempsey literally sat on his title for about 4 years after defending it regularly when he first won it.I don't have as high an opinion of Jack Dempsey. He was very good, but rarely defended his heavyweight title and avoided several boxers. He had only one really good win on his resume.
Harry Greb (arguably the greatest of all time) and Gene Tunney were the best boxers of that generation. Many heavyweights such as Rocky Marciano and Wladimir Klitschko had much better careers than Dempsey.
