The decline of tennis in the USA

An article at Pajamas Media points out that despite this being a golden age with Federer and Nadal the sport of tennis has declined in the US. For the first time since the early 70s there are no American men in the ATP top 10. In the late 70s Wimbledon finals got between 7 and 9 million viewers - today it is just a couple of million at best.

Why have Americans lost interest in tennis?

Some of the replies are intelligent. Some are just plain stupid. Some examples:

I'm a dude. Men should not play sports that women can be equally good at. Tennis is a chick sport. Leave such an effete sport to the chicks. Same with soccer. Chicks can play as well as the dudes. Give me American Football. There's a reason girls don't play real football.

The same person says BJ King beating Bobby Riggs proved women could play as well as men.

Most Americans like democracy when it comes to politics"¦but when it comes to sports, we want to see the elite play: the biggest, strongest, fastest and toughest. Tennis players are great athletes"¦but it is still viewed as elitist, too prissy and will always seem like a sport for rich country club types. Moreover, the two best female players"¦the Williams sisters"¦look more like guys, and with the dress code seemingly gone (what could be sexier than a white mini-skirt?), the glamor is gone too. Another factor is that the same people are always playing. Soccer/European football on the other hand, is too democratic and can/is played by everyone everywhere. Besides, watching a bunch of girls"¦or a bunch of skinny and regular looking guys play a sport where they kick a ball around for what seems like forever without scoring, is just boring. Rugby, American football, basketball"¦and certainly boxing, require specialized physiques in addition to talent.

Any sport carrying a score of "love"Â just sounds too effete for real men: ie., Americans, unless they are Europhiles or have been exposed to it from early youth.

The past "heroes"Â of tennis I also considered to be somewhat less than inspiring. Bobby Riggs? John McEnroe? They practically invented the "bad boy"Â act that is now considered de rigueur in the NBA.

There you have it. A couple of white guys are to blame for the behaviour of NBA players!

Tennis is the best sport in the world because of the combination of athleticism, power and geometry. American football is for weak-minded fools who need their fill of big hits and touchdown celebrations. Leave tennis for the higher-brained folk.

I stopped watching tennis pretty much for the same reason I stopped watching golf . . . it got to the point that no matter what was happening the media had a few "love affairs"Â going with a few selected players such that the only thing that they ever talked about was those players. For example, even when Tiger was way back in the pack, far off leader board, all we heard and saw in TV was "When Tiger is going to make his Big Move"Â and put in the winning shot. Take the Williams Sisters for example in tennis, the same thing. We got to watch them and of course their IDIOT father setting in the stands looking like a fool.

No board would be complete without a DWF comment:

The reason Americans have lost interest in tennis is that it is unbelievably boring to watch or play. And though the players have to be technically proficient at this very peculiar skill set (admittedly achieved thru years of practice) you really don't need to be much of an athlete or have a physical presence. I'm guessing either of the Williams sisters could take Federer two out of three falls. Tennis seems to be the perfect sport for the 19th century. At least with golf you can play drunk and still rack up a reasonable score.

Brat McEnroe turned me off to tennis, not to even mention the poise of the sport, w/ the whites and manners; as in fencing (my personal sport) -gone the grace, poise, form as one kills the enemy- much harder presenting a smaller target and using skill in the offense/defense. Now, no need for the Foil or Epee- might as well use a 2X4. I recently saw the pix of one of the Williams steroidal gargantuas playing in what the PMSNPC anchor called "flesh coloured tights- yet bare-ass was what the pix showed. I surfed to find the truth and, even though someone blacked in some panties, the rest of the pix showed, clearly, hairless female genitalia. Really? Have we become so oppressed to the point of self-censorship by the skin colour ‘pass' that the obvious is quickly redefined, as though we are blind?

Great article but the author misses the point. All the great players today (both men and women) are European. But why is that? Author doesn't seem to recognize that the Euros are in much better shape than we are as a group of peopleâ€"thinner and much more disciplined in very aspect of their lives. We are fat and lazy as everyone knows. Until we wake up our kids and tell them yes you need to run in the outodors today for five miles when it is 90 degrees (instead of coddling them) we will never be good in any sport again. Has anyone seen the Asian teams destroy us in the Little League World series. Same storyâ€"fat Americans gains thin , disciplined Asians. Stop coddling and start pushing our kidns out of their house and into the real world of competition.

But keep in mind, the decrease in popularity (as measured by TV viewership) has affected ALL sports. For hockey and horse racing (especially the latter, which has not had a triple crown winner in 32+ years), it has been particularly devastating...They have all been devastated by the vast choices in electronic entertainment â€" beyond broadcast/basic cable, you know have expanded cable, satellite TV, video games/Nintendo/EA Sports, internet, DVDs, fantasy sports, etc.

Who ruined the women's tennis for me was the William's sisters. And when one of the idiot sister's recently decided it was hip to wear a thong for the bottom half, it pushed me over the edge. I'd as soon as stared at a horse's ass for two hours. For thee, but not for me.

So even from Americans there isn't much love for the Williams sisters.

I glanced at a few other message boards around the net and one of the most common answers for the decline of tennis is that it is too white. Courts are in the suburbs and "inner city folk" are closed out due to how expensive it is. Another common answer is that tennis players don't look like "real athletes" (muscle-bound steroid monkeys?). If you can't sell Federer and Nadal to the public (perhaps the media haven't made the effort?) is there any hope for tennis?Edited by: Matra1

I find Men's Tennis to be way more exciting than soccer. Tennis is an action sport, and if people try to deny that, they are being deceptive.

I'm not really concerned about the people that don't like tennis. To each his own. I know that I like watching Soderling, Berdych, Murray and Djokovic. They look "athletic" to me...

Tennis is a sport dominated by whites. The people who are not watching it are off cheering for black athletes in other sports and 'dissing' whites for their lack of athletic ability.

Although major tennis events are covered favorably by the media, tennis has gotten away from the high-school tennis team roots in many areas and has become perceived as a "blue-blood" hoidy-toidy sport as might be pictured in the movie "Trading Places", with only snobbish nerds needing to apply.
When I was a "yout", tennis was a great pastime. Some of my best dates were tennis dates. Nowadays, most courts are empty, lights on just to keep the moths occupied.

Stupid article. I play tennis, grew up playing tennis, was ranked etc then I got burned out. Got into hoops, baseball(was looked at by pro scouts, etc)

Tennis is f**king awesome and fun. Half of those russian women could kick the sh*t out of me if I played them.I saw them live, they're amazing athletes. The williams sheboons should be checked for roids, it's the only thing keeping them in the top ten.

As for mens tennis, I grew up with mcenroe, conners, boris, becker, lendl, etc

There was never a better time for mens tennis than the 80s.

A lot of todays tennis players are bigger and many are built, some probably use hgh, some don't obviously but some do. I think YOkovich is actually pretty f**king awesome in that he looks like some military sniper, literally. I wouldn't f**k with that dude off the court if I saw him and soderling is pretty strong himself, built like my swedish hockey playing friend.

Tennis just has a bunch of ****gots at the top right now, federer is good but he is a skinny muppet and nadal is just a turd colored homosexual imo.

They just need to be gone andnew blood will come in.

One last thing, where I live in cali, all the high schools have competitive tennis teams and tennis classes at the jc are packed, we're talking 40 people per class. I live in a 80 percent large white town though.

"And for all the fat ass football tards on that page, get off your fat f**king loser asses and lose some weight you f@ggots, your dicks might not be two inches anymore if you lost some weight, you might actually get laid for once. ha ha ha."

It doesn't matter who i'm talking about. I just don't get bozos who rip on tennis. Maybe itdoes have snobby people in it, it was the sport of kings afterall. But it's a tough, gruelling sport.Igrewup with people who were strong athletes. Some of them played tennis, hoops, wrestling, and some played football. And our team was full of athletes, guys with naturally strong biceps, big legs.We had a german-american redhead on our team that also played basketball. He wasone of thebig centers for our h.s. basketball team. The other guy who was our #1 was a big tall, thickblonde kid who literally was built like a viking(bigger than boris becker)and he was an awesome athlele so he won the leaguesingles final. I was asked to play football and be a lineman but I refused. I was anti-social to their military, good govt.bullsh*t.

Another thing, There's so many f**king hot chicks that play tennis, it would only make sense to be around that if you're a healthy normal dude. I tried football but it was too slow and I didn't want to be in pads in 100 degree weather for practice. But some people like that.

I wish we had rugbyin h.s.I played in college a bit.I found it more brutal than wrestling orfootball(when I played for a bit).

I'll tell you another thing, the toughest guy in our school(and he was a bully), he played tennis and no one made fun of him. lol

Everybody is trying to pinpoint why there are no hotshot American tennis players on the scene. Here it is said that America's top athletes are not taking up the sport. In a round about way the writer agrees with Richard Williams, he probably won't call for Black tennis academies though. Here is the relevant quote from the article:

Also, the United States' top athletes aren't taking up tennis. "Clearly Rafa Nadal and Fernando Verdasco are Spain's best athletes," Fish said after his loss to Serbia's Novak Djokovic. "They're getting a lot of their, you know, obviously soccer is their biggest sport, but tennis is right there." Americans hear a similar lament each time the World Cup comes around. What if LeBron James had chosen soccer? Same goes for tennis. His height would likely give him a serve like Isner's, but he'd be a lot more mobile around the court.

Here is a video of two guys discussing the issue. It's interesting how the top prospects at the moment are coming from outside USTA system. The one fellow has a point when he states that the USTA does not know how to pick players and develop them.

The "what if LeBron played (pick your sport)" is so tired. The only sport Lebron is suited for is basketball. Period. Did anybody see Michael Jordan on a baseball field? He looked like an awkward giraffe. His golf swing is horrible. The primary asset in basketball is HEIGHT. So, compared to other 6'9" people, Lebron is fast and strong. Big whoop. If Lebron was 5'9" he would be working at McDonald's.

For 30 years from the 70's into the 2000's, US tennis has been a dominating force in both men and women circuits. I think people got spoiled and though it could go on for several more years. Then it suddenly stopped, part of the problem is the training program. To me, tennis players are like boxers, they can only go so far depending on their trainer.

Aw, just ask the DWF's and they will tell you the reason for the decline in tennis on the international level is that our best athletes aren't playing.
smiley2.gif
They will tell you that if you just get LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Johnson, Chad Ochocinco and a few others to pick up a racket, and instantly, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and the rest won't have a chance! Same thing for soccer

None of those athletes you mentioned would have the endurance/stamina to play a long three set match much less to grind out a five setter with the likes of Nadal. They would all be puking on the court.

I know that, you know that, but the DWF nation is completely enamored with their 'supermen'. We just need more inner-city tennis courts, Government-supplied equipment and training, and then both mens and womens tennis with be flush with blacks! They will cite Venus and Serena Williams as proof of the superiority. And yes, I've had this argument on DWF forums before.

Average elite soccer player is around around 5-11 to 6 feet.
that true for holland and even nearly national team of japan( 5.10.5)
On most postitions the average is like 6-1 or a little more but average attacking midfielder or winger( right or left attacker) is average 5.9.75 and you have to be very technicall and when you are very tall with higher center of gravity and balance it is more difficult to be very technicall or a being fast in turning your body because taller people have on average a broader body.when you are sub 5-6 or more then 6-4 you have a lot less chance to become elite.for example 10% of european men is less then 5-6 feet but in soccer they are around 2%.
5% is taller then 6-4 but around 1% in soccer except goalkeepers.
I doubt he would be the man for soccer.

if you are really tall you have of course big advantage at basketball ther are not much poeple very tall so if you are 6 feet 8 or more what only 1 in 700 american men is and you do basketball you have a good chance to reach the NBA with intensively taining and being black of course.

The French Open final between Nadala and Federer was the most watched French final since 1999. It got a 2.6 overnight rating. The cities (actually Census Metropolitan Areas) where it got the most viewers were West Palm Beach, Washington DC, Atlanta, Richmond, and Columbus. Most of those have large black populations.

Whites dominate tennis, big time, so why you complain guys? Would you prefer black Americans to dominate it instead of white Europeans or something, like sprints for example?<div>

</div><div>Come on man, is that a serious question? I am a normal human being, citizen of Sweden, working 9 to 5, i am not a king or prince Williams, what are you talking about? Just because kings and queens come from Europe, it doesn't mean that all of us have a title, very few people actually have a title.</div><div>I am a normal every day man.</div>

I think the OP mentioned
"USA" to illustrate that we (USA White men) used to be fairly dominant
in this sport, just like we used to be more dominant in Golf,
Basketball, Boxing, etc. And, more importantly, to illustrate the
correlation and toll that programs like Title IX, Affirmative Action,
and the Zi0nist-controlled Caste media have contributed to this overall
decline over the past 30-odd years.

It's a canary in a coal mine, no pun intended. Other than that, CF'ers
proudly support Whites from other countries whether they be from Europe,
Australia, or even North Africa. Your avatar indicates you are from
Sweden. We haven't quite reached the pillars of Feminist insanity that
has been achieved in Sweden (yet), so I am somewhat sympathetic and can understand why your response
came off as "catty".

Well said. I understand and share your frustration and anger. We have to live it every freakin' day. I utterly abhor the USA National Teams. Culturally, however, Sweden could've and should've learned from what was happening in our culture and society with black crime and mayhem and not allowed them in the country, but Cultural Marxism can be a powerful hallucinogen to the uninformed and naive. Scandinavia in the 50's, 60's, and 70's was as close to a Utopia as there's ever been as far as I'm concerned.

I will differ with you on women, however...I am a bit sexist and like them feminine, sweet, somewhat vulnerable, and soft-spoken.
