High school football in Texas is big time and it is coming to the end of the 5A playoffs. In 5A DivII, once again it is a rematch of the 2003 Finals, Southlake Carroll vs. Katy. From what I can tell, Southlake has one black starter on defense at CB and a black RB, but is white at every other position. Katy has two black running backs and one black backup DB, but the rest of the team is white with a couple of hispanics. Katy beat all white Smithson Valley, last year's finalist, to get to the title game.Southlake beat mostly black Lufkin in the semi-finals. Three of the four semi-finalists were mostly white.
Southlake uses a spread offense much like Texas Tech with leading receivers, McKay Jacobsen (1496 yds), Evan Fentriss (897 yds), and Clint Renfro (727 yds) leading the way. QB Greg McElroy has 4308 yds passing with 52 TDs.
Katy is a more balanced attack with two black RBs combining for 2039 yds and two white WRs Michael Fuda (1203 yds, 18 TDs) and Will Thompson (371 yds, 4 TDs). Thompson also handles kick returns (2 TDs on punt returns), is the best DB with 4 interceptions returned for 2 TDs, and is considered the fastest player on the team. QB Andy Dalton has 2476 yds passing and 40 TDs.
