Texas’ teams

People say that the most competitive high school
football is in Texas. That is what the media seems to say too(not
that they carry veracity). Anyway, I was wondering what the
racial makeup of Texas' top high school teams is. Not only
because of the competition, but because of it becoming minority white.

Whites in Texas tend to move away quickly as soon as more than a handfull of blacks moves in. Many of our state champions are all white or almost all white teams. West Texas is where most mestizos are moving ,with the exception of the largest cities of Dallas and Houston. Their teams are all black anyway. Teams like Katy, Southlake Carrol, and Stephenville are white and have won several state championships. La Marque is all black(excepting the kicker). In West Texas they are mixed in Odessa and Midland ,but I don't think the've won a state championship in quite some time. In my area, Southeast Texas, Nederland and Port Neches Groves are consistently in contention. They are mostly white with One or two blacks on the team. Beaumont Ozen challenges them, they usually don't win despite all that "talent". They are black with one or two whites. Texas is such a large state that it is hard to categorize it. Typically the large cities of Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin have a very large percentage of the teams are black. The suburban schools are predominantly white. In the small towns, East Texas is high percentage black, Central and West Texas are predominantly white, South Texas are mixed white and hispanic. About 2/3rds of the state champion teams are from the suburban white schools or the small town white schools. What is interesting is the majority of the Div 1 recruits comes from the large city black schools or the East Texas small town black schools.

Texas Tech recruits heavy in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico which is why you see a lot of white kids on their team. Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Baylor recruit heavy in Eastern part of Texas, which are mostly black kids.

The only corrections I would make to SeveB's comments are that ...
1. Most suburban schools are racially mixed. There are some that are predominantly white, but, by-in-large, they are a mixture of white-black-Hispanic.
2. The University of Texas recruits ALL of the Lone Star State. Maybe the majority of their Texas players are from the eastern portion, but the Longhorns shake the trees in every portion of the state.

Bronk you're from Houston right? Katy is almost completely white I thought. And I'm just down the road in Beaumont. Lumberton, Vidor, PNG, Bridge City, and Nederland are almost completely white. The high school I went to, out of about a thousand kids, we had about two mestizos, zero blacks, and one asian. None were on the football team. Edited by: KG2422

I think Texas is a tale of two directions. East and West. For the most part East=black and West=white. That is what I have seen in my limited experiences watching Texas prep teams.

KG2422: Yes, I live in the Houston area and here like in San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi and the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex most of the suburban teams are mixed. Yes, schools like Katy and Kingwood, Westlake, Southlake Carrol, PN-G, etc. are predominately white but take suburban schools in Aldine, Humble, Klein, Cy Fair, Spring, Clear Lake/Clear Creek, Galena Park, the Fort Bend-Richmond areas and they are largely mixed as are the outlying industrial town schools like Pasadena, Baytown, Channelview, Texas City etc. I believe you can say that about suburban schools in towns like Arlington, Garland, Converse, and the like.

I think Beaumont's racial lines are more starkly drawn than the rest of Gulf Coast/East Texas. But aren't West Brook and PA Memorial mixed? At least PAM is. Central is black as is Ozen.

PA Memorial is almost all black from what I can tell. It is the result of the combination of Lincoln ,Thomas Jefferson and little Stephen F. Austin(the only one with any whites). West Brook is mixed but it is the only school in Beaumont that is mixed. The football team stinks. PA Memorial is mixed if you count the Vietnamese. Katy and Kingwood, Westlake, Southlake Carrol, PN-G, are much better than the mixed schools you mentioned. I guess there are examples of both demographic situations. And you are right Beaumont's racial lines are more starkly drawn. It can seem like a powder keg around here sometimes.
