The Maryville Spoofhounds could have shut out the St. Joseph Benton Cardinals 46-0 at last week's game.

They did nothing to stop freshman running back Matt Ziesel from running more than 60 yards to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard. Cardinals Coach Dan McCamey asked the Spoofhounds for their cooperation because Ziesel, 15, has Down syndrome and spent the entire season on the bench -- begging the coach to let him get some action on the field.

I guess if the kid with downs doesnt realise that the other team gave it to him, then thats great. It gives a very unfortunate person something special.

This is a great bleeding heart story that could elicit a number of responses from CF posters. If the kid is good enough to get on the field, then put him in before the end of the game. If not, and the coach still wanted to let the kid play, he shouldn't have received special treatment from his opponents. If he scored through a Herculean effort by himself and his teammates, then it would really be worth celebrating. The gift of a TD to any player is nothing to celebrate, imho.

Hey the kid wanted the thrill of playing football not a make believe phony play. It would have been better for him to get hit with a hard tackle, that's what football is all about, not running untouched for a TD.

Col, I could not have said it better myself. I have no problem with a "special" kid going in the game if it's a blowout. If I was on defense, I would not have hit him as hard as possible, but I still would have tackled. There's nothing significant about him scoring a TD if the other team didn't even try to defend.

I am with Shogun on this one, give the kid his special moment. I know kids are raised softly these days with too much focus on self-esteeem without the accomplishments that should precede having higher self-esteem. But in this particular case, it's a feel good story and I am happy for the kid.
