Last grocery stores leaving Detroit.

<DIV =entry>

CofCC.org News Team

Detroit is about to lose it's last two major-chain big box grocery stores. In a city who's population could support 41 major grocery stores, the last two are going out of business. Shoplifting at Detroit grocery stores, which greatly exceeds profit margins, along with the high cost of having extra security guards has caused grocery stores to pack up and leave. Grocery store chains also site human resources problems. They can't find employees who can pass drug tests. Shopping carts disappear constantly costing the stores a fortune.

Oh yeah, and locals say it's because of "racism." yawn

From the Detroit Metro...

Net profits at supermarkets run 1-5 percent of revenue. If shoplifting by customers and employees runs 7-8 percent, the store is doomed to lose money.

High cost of maintaining security for the stores, something most suburban locations don't need. Shopping carts often disappear, at a cost of $300 per cart.

Personal safety for employees, with robberies, thefts and assaults both inside and outside the stores.

Detroit is approximately 84% Black, 5% Hispanic, 11% Asian/White/Middle Eastern

Wow - I didn't know that there were so few White people in Detroit that they don't even merit their own stat, in the post above by Bart, and get lumped in with two other groups as "White/Asian/Middle Eastern!

To be fair no one used the word racism in that article. You can't have a grocery store if it's not profitable.

Don't worry, blacks will blame this on the only white guy still living in Detroit.

50 years ago, Detroit was the industrial capital of the world. Now look at it.

Detroit has whole areas that have been reclaimed by nature. It is a city in a state of "devolution", and will look like the crude huts etc of Africa eventually if nothing steps in to change things. Detroit is an example of what is to come in Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. And what already is in progress in New Orleans.

Detroit is Mogadishu without the nice weather and efficient government services.

It's not just grocery stores that have disappeared either. Consider:

Up until a couple of years ago when the city bribed some developers to build upscale condo's near the "new center" area (where state financed casino's and stadiums have been built in the last few years), the city would have only a couple of new housing starts annually. That means that in one of America's larger cities NO ONE wanted to build any new houses. It's still for the most part true.

There are no conventional movie theatre's in the city. Movies bring young black kids who invariably get violent and either kill each other or some poor innocent, so the theatre's can't survive.

There are no large scale malls. America has been going on a mall building binge for the last 20 years. Not in Detroit. There are none.

For the record let me say that there may be one or two movie theatre's or malls on a "border" street with the suburbs, located far enough from the urban center to survive but the intent is the same. Stay out of the city.

My parents bought a house in Detroit in 1967 for about $22,000. It was sold in 1997 for about $12,000. Nearly a 50% decline in property value during the 30 years that property prices soared in the rest of the world.

Detroit is not bad, it is horrible. But it will get much worse in the future.

You aren't far from the truth. The best thing would be for all of the 10K Baltic avenue houses to be boarded up and let the trees and ivy to over grow the place and in a few thousand years we can wonderous ruins that tourist will pay through the nose to see........

The house actually declined more when you consider inflation. It probably was literally worth 1/4 the value in 67' bucks.

No suprise here. Destruction, destruction, destuction. From Paris to L.A., from neighborhoods in London down to Johannesburg, New Orleans to Mogadishu.
There is very little any government can due to change the genetic makeup of people as this is where the problem stems. We are are genes both individually, as well as collectively. We can only produce the civilizations that are compatible with our genes.

It's all in the genes.

My hometown St. Louis has now surpassed Detroit in murder and crime rates within the last year. The north side of the city is 98% black and has a nice post-apocalyptic aura to it. Murder and crime runs rampant. This part of the city had some of the most stunning architecture and neighborhoods built in the early 1900's that are now almost all in ruins. I wish National Geographic or the Discovery channel would run a special on Detroit and St. Louis so the whole world could witness the wild animals in their environment.

Here is a photo tour of North St. Louis:
