I don't understand why the NFL today only runs the basic I formation when running the football, where it never goes to the fullback. Back in the 70's and early 80's, many teams often ran a split back set where runs often swept left or right. With that formation, the defense never knew if it was going to the halfback or fullback, and often times the fullback got the carry. In the replay of SuperBowl XIII recently, this was used effectively by Dallas, alternating carries between Dorsett, Newsome and Laidlaw, As a fan of the Raiders during that time, I loved watching the mix in play calling that saw Van Eeghen, Banasak, and Hubbard split carries to the confusion of opposing defenses. Csonka, Morris and Kick come to mind as well. If your fullback is back there and never gets the ball then what surprise is that? Much like the simplified boring play calling that has taken over the NBA, I see the same boring malaise taking over the now boring and predictable NFL.
