Edwards dethrones Mthalane for IBF title

https://fightnews.com/edwards-dethrones-mthalane-for-ibf-title/110665

IBF flyweight champion Moruti Mthalane (39-3, 26 KOs) dropped a twelve round unanimous decision and lost his title to elusive challenger Sunny Edwards (16-0, 4 KOs) on Friday night at York Hall in London. Mthalane, who has been unbeaten since 2008, had difficulty reaching Edwards, who stayed out of range and swatted him with punches all night. Scores were 118-111, 120-108, 115-113.

i’m certainly no boxing expert, so please tell me how one judge can be so far off with their scoring from the other two ... is boxing so corrupt or so incompetent that the judges are this obvious with their dishonesty/ineptitude? or is there something else that can cause this wide discrepancy?

Sometimes they are corrupt, or incompetent. Other times they judged the fight differently.

could you explain option three a bit more? how can a (supposedly highly capable) judge see a fight so differently from the other judges? i am honestly curious, i know very little about the technical side of boxing.

One idea for why some judges see a fight differently and not being corrupt or incompetent is that each judge has a set spot where they watch the fight from and that spot could have problems viewing the action properly.

Traditionally judges can't use television monitors to watch fights, now a few jurisdictions allow replay for missed knockdowns or fouls.

The problem is that the same judges constantly have weird score cards, Ian John Lewis has a history of allowing fights to go on too long, so for him to be a competent judge would be a stretch.

At the end of the day the right boxer won but if the fight was a shade closer we would have had another controversial decision.

Seems I recall a female judge name Byrd who was notorious for her biased and way off base scorecards.

Well she's a female judging the fight. I think I've discovered the problem. Let's be real, how many woman know anything about fighting? LOL But muh equality.

Good to hear about Sunny. Another Anglo to cheer for.

Adalaide Byrd is one of if not the worst boxing judges in boxing. She also judges MMA matches. She is married to Robert Byrd who happens to be a boxing referee. Her scorecard is what gave Canelo a draw with GGG in their first fight.

White is right is correct when he mentions the positioning of the referees. There is no way they can cover the whole ring watching at ringside. It is probably the worst place to watch a fight because you cannot cover the whole ring sitting on one side of the ring. Three refs watching a fight in a four-sided ring cannot be done fairly. The use of monitors is the only way to see the fight. The closer you are to the ring the less you see.

Another class performance from Sunny Edwards in his first defence of his world title against Jayson Mama. Very talented fighter and only 25.

A great fighter I wish he was a heavyweight. He would be fighting for millions instead of tens of thousands of dollars. He showed a little more pop Sat.

He fights Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez December 16 in a unification fight, really looking forward to this!
